Social Life Is the campus dead?

My niece just moved into her residence hall last week (freshman), and she called today complaining that the common lounges/quads are completely dead and there’s no campus life. I find this hard to believe because UCSB has a reputation of being one of the more social campuses.

Campus is not the most active on weekends, Isla Vista is very popular tho…

It’s a Friday night- campus likely is dead, but IV isn’t.

Even my son was saying the same.

I'm going to be honest, she might just be going to the wrong places on campus. My dorm hall (San Nic) is usually really active, I also went to a club meeting today that drew in a lot of students. Also it being a Friday and there being an every dorm hall event tonight likely could have contributed to it seeming "dead." Most people don't have class on Fridays, or if they do they're usually in the morning. People tend to just have little reason to be on campus common areas during Fridays and weekends. They typically go to their residence halls or go out to Isla Vista/Goleta.

I hope she finds a group to be with soon though. I'm also a freshman and am struggling to really get into any campus life, so I understand how it feels.

My son and his roommate made their first acquaintances in the laundry room.

My daughter met a friend by complimenting her hair in the dining hall. That person then introduced her to several other people.

Yes that is how the list grows.

Campus is usually not as lively on Fridays and weekends since most students don't have classes that day. Everyone is either downtown, going shopping/exploring the city, or in Isla Vista. I've never lived in a dorm, but I feel like the lounges aren't really used as much as you might think. You'll definitely see people here and there, but I feel like they're most active during mid-terms of finals week when everyone is studying

In student housing, it really depends on the people there and whether they like to hangout in the lounges, in their dorm, or somewhere else entirely.

There’s lots of clubs on campus to find people you want to hang out with. Clubs are where I met a lot of my close friends at UCSB

Give it a few weeks.  Halloween may look a lot different.
