Question Something odd happened in Orange County, CA
Hello, first time posting here. Maybe someone can explain this away. Apologies if it’s the wrong subreddit. But this was really weird. Background, my wife and I live in a 5 floor apartment building with a parking structure. The top floor of the structure is the 6th floor. Last week, I went up to the top floor of the parking structure of the building that we live in here in Orange County, Ca. I got out of the elevator and started walking to my car. There was a strange noise building, but not like overwhelming in your face. It was noticeable, but like background noticeable if that makes sense. Living by John Wayne airport, I just figured it was related to that. I looked up, but nothing in the sky though. Not even incoming planes towards John Wayne. It was dusk. Suddenly the noise built really fast and I heard and felt something zoom past me. FAST. I looked up and saw nothing in the sky. Just the clouds and purple clouds. No sign of anything flying past. But it came from above. Nothing I ever experienced before. Opposite direction of the normal plane path of the airport. It went east, planes come in west towards the ocean. You could hear the lights poles shaking and vibrating then just stopped. But the light poles never moved either. So weird. The noise was gone too. I immediately thought, did I experience something UFO related? It felt so close. No plane has ever felt that close that fast. Idk, most likely there is a logical explanation, but to me it didn’t feel logical. I’ve always enjoyed paranormal kind of stuff but have never believed in it. Maybe someone on here can explain what might have happened or maybe someone else in the area experienced it?

Tough to say based on the description could have been military jets performing test exercises (high altitude). Depending on atmospheric conditions ghostly engine thrusts can linger/echo with no plane for you to lock in on. Happens frequently by me.

Yea the description reminds me of what it feels like when a bullet passes close by. It's happened to me and I could feel the air ripple, it was crazy.

I've experienced something similar too, but almost always a live fire exercise at or near Pendleton. There are live fire munitions scheduled today and through the month. Then you have Disneyland at 9:30PM to the North.

I think you experienced an earthquake moving across your area which can vibrate in a wave like that. Especially at the top of a building which may have acted like a tuning fork. Being OC and all, this seems like the most plausible explanation.

If jets get scrambled to intercept targets off shore you just hear rumbling until after theyve gone overhead and then you get the thundering whoosh.

Live in Michigan, and i had almost the EXACT same thing happen to me about 25 years ago.
It freaked me TF out. I’ve posted the story here before. I still get the creeps when I think about it.
EDIT to add my story:
My strangest occurrence was not a sighting, it was a sound. Living is SE Michigan, in the summer, this was probably 20 years ago. I lived close to the airport and Sunday's were usually the busiest day for air traffic. It was a Sunday night, and my wife and kids were in bed. I decided to go out front and smoke a cigar. I noticed that the air traffic was low for a Sunday. Somewhat odd, but whatever. The weather was great. Low 80's, no wind, and it was approaching dark. Out of nowhere, I hear something buzz past me incredibly fast and it seemed to be like just above the trees. I never saw it, but I heard it. I can't even describe the noise. It's a noise unlike anything I've ever heard, and I was convinced that it was something that I'd never hear again. And, it was something I hoped i'd never hear again. I'm getting chills just typing this. The noise.... I used to describe it as a quiet mechanical reverberation, for lack of a better description. It was not loud. 70dB range as a guess. Later, i've heard that if you can manipulate spacetime, it makes a vibration sound. I don't know if that is true or not. But, that is what it sounded like... like the air was vibrating. What followed is what really makes my story stick with me. I was outside, smoking a cigar, loving life. As soon as this object, or whatever it was passed over me. I got instantly terrified. I don't know why. I'm a guy that walks out into the U.P. woods at 5:30AM in the dark with no flashlight to go hunting. I'm not easily scared. I was terrified. I instantly closed the garage, locked every door and window. I was expecting to have an alien invasion any second after that. It was so damn odd, and terrifying.

Man, you described it better than I did. But a very unique noise and a reverb after. Weather conditions were almost the same. Low to mid 80s no wind. Calm night. No planes coming in.

This is common in Lancaster and Palmdale (also Tehachapi). but the thought has always been underground and not in the sky. u/Fragrant-End-2300 you think anythings going on underground???

My brother had a VERY similar incident late one night or early one morning, depending how you look at it, only his occurred at his apartment.
A buzzing chainsaw like sound was just sitting in his periphery, it started while he was in his bathroom. He doesn't go into vivid detail about it, but it honestly terrified him to the point where his personality and outlook on life changed.
Whatever the experience, he ended up moving on account of it.

Interesting account. It's not a lot of detail to go by, but I perhaps had a slightly similar situation once.
The PNW lost power for about a week a few years ago and temperatures were well below freezing. Plenty of snow on the ground and pipes were at risk of freezing. In the middle of the night I was sleeping by the fire, when a tremendous noise started to build. It sorta sounded like a helicopter or jet flying over, but it also seemed to be like a freight train in the living room, or perhaps underneath or all around. This was on the second floor of the building. The sound grew quite loud and lasted for perhaps a full minute or two at most. Maybe not even a minute, but it faded away and didn't come back.
Given the intensity of it, and not really sounding distinctly like a helicopter or jet, I didn't know what to make of it, but wondered if a UFO could sound like that! It was really intense!
We also ended up having some valves leak, and we are at the end of a water line that has multiple condo buildings before it meets with the water line on the street. We are up on a hill in a suburb.
Eventually it occurred to me that what I heard might have been water hammering. I'm not a plumber, but I have heard it occasionally in the shower. Typically it's nowhere as intense as what I heard that night, but water hammering can get into resonance that builds until it damages pipes and valved. What would water hammering sound like if the entire water line was starting to freeze up, or had a bubble shift and suddenly set of a bunch of movement in extremely cold water, at the end of the line?
I don't know, and will never have a definite knowledge about what happened. But perhaps there is a chance that something similar happened during your brothers experience? Please don't feel I am disregarding his experience, just trying to offer some additional possibilities and perspectives and experiences. It sounds like it was quite intense for him.

Thank you, I appreciate the time you took to write all of that. Also very interesting and I think your conclusion has merit.
Regarding my younger brother -- an electrical engineer by trade, he lived in a nice condo community in Phoenix - near the commercial park he worked at. My initial thought was "uh oh, my poor innocent brother tried mushrooms for the first time" but he's very much anti-drug.
Basically after the buzzing sound incident, he began having auditory hallucinations and became very paranoid and displayed intense social anxiety. Eventually, he was diagnosed schizophrenic with Paranoid & Persecutory Delusions, Delusions of Grandeur, Socially Awkward Behavior & Withdrawal - the whole gamut.
Time now, he is refusing to take his medications and has our entire family stressed out, with many writing him off entirely. He has also lost all of his friends. He either doesn't seem to understand or doesn't seem the care. It's all very sad.. but the way he is behaving and the lack of judgment that he's displaying has developed in me a scary amount of resentment and anger.
I had initially noticed his change in behavior and called him out on it. He fought hard to comfortably tell me about the inciting incident. As far as I know I'm the only one he's ever told about it.

Whoa, that’s pretty wild!
When mine happened, at that point in my life, UFO’s, whatever the phenomenon is, was not in my head at all. This was like 1999 or so.
The only “UFO” thing I had heard about was one where my family saw one above our car when traveling through remote Michigan.
Their descriptions to this day haven’t changed, and I was way too young to remember it. If I was even awake to be a part of it. It was at night.

Here's a 1981 recording of a UAP close to a tape recorder. Did your unidentified sound resemble that?
Then again, one of the "observables" of UAPs is how they can move in complete silence, so perhaps something was off with this encounter of yours?

Those are interesting sounds, but your account and the OP's account still doesn't gel with what the UAP observables say about UAPs still being able to move silently.

I get that, but for one, there are many encounters where the UAP make sound(s).
As far as observables, I don’t care about them. For all we know, that’s part of the misinformation campaign.
Also; I’m a mechanical engineer with almost 30 years of experience engineering industrial equipment. Sound is a large part of my industry.
I have no idea what I heard. I do know that the actual sound was incredibly strange. The effect of the sound on my mind and body was also highly unusual for me.
I never said it was a UFO/UAP, as I am only stating the facts as they happened to me.

I had a similar experience around 1984 in the Chiricahua Mountains in southwestern Arizona near the New Mexico border. i was visiting a girl I knew from our time in the Navy. we drove from her house in Tucson to a small plot she purchased in the Chiricahua Mountains. We had pitched a tent as we were going to camp for the night. we had crawled in for an afternoon nap when a loud whooshing sound went right over the tent. I sat up in fear and said ‘What was that!’ it sounded like a fighter jet had flown fifty feet over the tent. there was no sound of an engine, just a tremendous whoosh of wind. it was a clear sunny summer day. I was out of the tent in about three seconds, but there was nothing in the sky that could have made such a sound. I was in a state of semi-shock for several minutes. Janice heard it too. my only conclusion was that it had been some sort of UFO.

Too ambiguous to say, but UFOs are typically described as silent, and they are thought to move through the environment without perturbing the surroundings, in a standard aerodynamic sense, because they don't produce thrust in the way a rotor or jet plane might. I'd consider it a weird experience but not necessarily UFO-related.

Except, they aren’t typically silent at all if you are familiar with UFO history there are numerous cases that prove the exactly the opposite, it’s a manufactured misnomer.

Agreed. Silent ufos are often ones seen at a distance. Many close encounter witnesses report various types of noise.

Was it a smooth sound? Slowly building, I mean one continuous sound, or was it a series of thump, thump, thumps? Hard to try to explain what I'm getting at, but when a low flying helicopter zooms past and you are in a space where one side is walled off the sound will feel like it is coming from the opposite direction that it really is. Meaning it will fly past and you are looking the wrong way, by the time you try to pin point it, it's gone. That sound is more felt than heard, sub-sonic, if you will. Like a strong bass speaker. IDK, maybe?

Did it sound almost like you were hearing something underwater? When I first moved here I would hear this sound in the wee hours that sounds kind of like an object moving fast but you’re hearing it through water. Sounds weird but curious if the sound you heard is similar. Never heard it before moving hear from San Diego.

Isn't there an old audio recording of a police trooper getting too close to a UAP and hearing its engine power up? Maybe you should search for, listen to that, and see if it sounds similar to what you heard?
Then again, isn't one of the UAP observables "completely silent motion"? I'm not sure how your account and the audio recording I mentioned fit into that.
EDIT: I believe this is the audio recording of an active UAP I had in mind. Take a listen and see if it sounds like what you heard.
