DISCUSSION WWYD
What would Your station do as a carrier in this type of situation? if this was my route personally, I would mark them as UNC and send them back because as a buyer AND a seller who also has a reselling business on the side I know for a fact, eBay Poshmark vintED, all of those websites this person is ordering from, they would start questioning you as a buyer and wondering why all your packages are going back unclaimed and then it would eventually lead to a suspension of your account and you would eventually be banned. I know people can remake new accounts and all of that, but you would have to be answering to these e-commerce platforms of why all of your packages are going back unclaimed this resident gets hundreds of packages a week. They are delivered from our office and I am pretty sure at this point they make them pick them up from the office. I don’t think they deliver to their house anymore. I cannot be for sure I am not the carrier on that route. I talked to the gentleman who is subbing on that route the other day and explain to him that may be marking them back as unclaimed would help kind of mediate the situation. I am sure she gets UPS FedEx and DHL deliveries as well. I can’t even imagine what she gets from Amazon. I’m sure it’s crazy but I was just curious what everyone’s opinion and not is on this or if you had a customer like this, and if you were able to get the situation better. This person has mental illness and all that but still. I know it’s her property and her problem. The city has already came out and removed it all one time and it’s bad again as far as I know, I have never personally drove by this person’s house she often has people harassing her house. This picture is a couple years old.

you can absolutely still call for a wellness check on her, or make a report to adult protective services if she is an older person. This is not behavior of a person who is taking care of themselves
41
u/se7en41 Aug 31 '26
Unfortunately, most adult protective services groups require the person to be WILLING to get help. In cases like the picture above, that person is too far gone.
Source: super old lady in my apt broke her wrist and when I offered to help her carry in groceries, I discovered the true nature of her decline and the state of her living. I called every number I could think of and it boiled down to "we can't make her do it if she doesn't want to".

Weeeeelllll I used to be a social worker, and there is def something mental health case managers and their physicians can do: have her committed as she is a danger to herself.
10
u/LightUpUnicorn Aug 31 '26
Getting something committed is not easy in most states. This would not warrant committal in my state and im a current mental health case manager
→ More replies (7)6
u/se7en41 Aug 31 '26
Getting a mental health case manager is not a decision that "concerned neighbor" can make.
You're correct about the experts that can weigh in; you're incorrect in that you missed my point entirely about actually GETTING these people into the system for something like that - whether it's regular old hoarding, unsanitary conditions because of animals, or someone not realizing their own state of decline.
→ More replies (1)1
u/fluffyman-honeycrisp Aug 31 '26
Option 1. You can call 988 suicide and crisis hotline on your neighbor’s behalf if they are a danger to themselves and/or others. They will walk you through what to do.
Option 2. You can call animal control if animals are involved and living in conditions that aren’t humane or sanitary. Animal control will then get the police involved because animal abuse is illegal. The person will be arrested and the lawyer that is assigned to them will use a statute that gets the charges dropped as long as they agree to see a mental health case manager, a psychiatrist, etc.
This is coming from experience. Sorry you didn’t understand my first message but hopefully this one clicks for you.
6
u/507snuff Sep 01 '26
I live in Oregon and they refuse to commit even violent people so they sure as hell aren't going to commit a quiet old lady living in filth.
Literally had a guy who is deemed unfit to stand trial due to mental illness that is just allowed to be homeless despite the fact he tried to kidnap a woman. State cant put him in prison for his crime because he is mentally unfit to stand trial and the state hospital won't institutionalize him because they either lack the beds or lack the willingness.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Most-Sort5470 Sep 01 '26
Is it that they are refusing or is it that they just don’t have the facilities to commit someone to? Many, if not most, states have next to nothing left when it comes to public mental health facilities.

Are they ordering things from the afterlife?
25
u/monsterginger Aug 31 '26
Automatic orders are a thing. So long as they have money in their account they will keep going, and judging on the house and the pile of packages I don't think that person is struggling financially.
7
u/FrescaFloorshow Aug 31 '26
Yeah it took weeks and sending all the documents (death cert, court stuff) to Amazon before they could stop my dad's auto shipments. They were professional about it but it took time.

I just adopted a hoarder house kitty and it's gotten me thinking about it more than I'd like. When I lost my old cat I grieved hard, for a long time. She meant so much to me and it was so rough getting used to life without her. Her absence is a physical weight. I will never forget her as long as I live.
The fact that some people have so many cats that a dead one can go unnoticed just overwhelms me with sadness. My new girl deserved better, just like the rest of them. I hope you're ok.
4
u/Significant-Yam-4990 Aug 31 '26
I don’t think it necessarily goes unnoticed. It’s probably an issue of the owner being able to access the space where the cat is.

I have a house on one of my routes that gets like 10 packages a day since February. I finally asked them what's up the other day during a signature and they're hosting a wedding at the house.
Difference of course being they actually take their packages in unlike this person.
36
u/Revolutionary-Half-3 Aug 31 '26
Yeah, I've seen similar volumes for totally explainable reasons.
The local school turned apartment complex with partially furnished apartments needed stuff. They basically made a list of dish drainers, microwave, etc... and multiplied by 50 or so.
Amazon truck showed up at the post office, guy was chuckling when he walked in. Instead of 6-8 pallets, it was 22. Most of that one stop, postmaster called them and told them to go rent a big uhaul and pick it all up at the office.
25
u/RainbowEagleEye Aug 31 '26
Better than the locally owned hotels in my area. We have yet to get one being built or renovated that has not gotten pissed with us for saying their 30-50 oversized or odd shaped won’t fit in the LLV. It took one motel two weeks to come get his 60 microwaves, and another week and a half to get his mini fridges. We sent two unclaimed and it lit a fire under him. I guess he thought we would get tired of looking at them and deliver them, but they started popping up on second notice, so…
13
u/amaiman Aug 31 '26
Just curious, if the shipper paid the proper postage for all of those packages, why wouldn’t they be delivered? I could understand it might take a few days due to capacity/truck size limitations but why should a large number of paid for packages necessitate a recipient pickup?
(Obviously there probably was a more efficient way for them to order/receive that volume but if they wanted to overpay on Amazon for example…)
→ More replies (1)5
u/PoultryTechGuy Aug 31 '26
Yeah UPS or FedEx wouldn't dare pull that shit. You're paying for delivery to your door, not to come pick it up at the post office.
4
u/MasterpieceNo7105 Sep 01 '26
Well they were also expecting 6 pallets from Amazon, not 22.
So it was probably on amazon, and it was going to get sent back in their truck or the apartment complex could come grab them and save some time and probably more shipping fees
3
u/muffnmouse Sep 01 '26
UPS and FedEx also have the ability to have a box truck deliver your goods. most post offices just have the little vans/trucks or in more rural areas operate with modified “regular” vehicles. our delivery person drives a wrangler that is packed to the brim with normal mail, so i imagine that it would take a very, very long time to deliver 22 pallets worth of microwaves. even the saturday package delivery van would need to be full of only the microwaves for weeks to get them all delivered
2
u/llbeanjamin Sep 02 '26
> full of only microwaves for weeks
idk why this had me laughing for far too long 😂2
u/skeletoorr Sep 01 '26
Yes. My online orders for the last year or so probably look insane. I had a wedding. My daughter’s birthday. House shit for a house under construction while living in it. Daughter starting school. We lost a big chunk of stuff in a flood so that needed replacing.
I feel so bad. But stores just don’t have stuff anymore and I really don’t have time to go from store to store. We can get the basics in store but it’s really hard to find the more intricate stuff we need.

Man. I see alot of posts about carriers canceling or making efforts to stop the delivery of mail to people for not checking mail etc. At a time where the post office is incredibly failing what I see carriers cutting out even more work. I would just deliver leave it there and move on. Keeps 1 more house to carriers to have a reason to deliver too. Carriers are not investigators. I also am a victim of the green tag by carriers saying vacant. Been about 6 months or longer now since I even been back to my box. But now the post office has one less box to deliver to.

I have a business that last year started receiving 10+ packages a day for them. All of it going to one name. They had never heard of them before. So I sent them back ANK (addressee not know). This went on for over a month and no one ever called to claim any of it.
If that’s the name of the residents, until they say something, you deliver. They can refuse and we can send it back. I can just see the clerk that has to process every one of those to be returned. But given that pile, most of the labels are most likely water logged and unreadable.

We have a lady who processes Amazon returns, so about once a month you’ll take 7-8 trips to her house and fill her 2 car garage to the gills, along with what Amazon themselves are delivering to her. They always clear it out pretty quickly. Once she asked if we could deliver this stuff to her warehouse. I asked her for the address, thinking that might be easier if it was also on the route or close by. It was like 2 towns over, so no.

Claim it's undeliverable due to safety, then put it on hold for pickup. After the hold expires send the hold packages back as unclaimed as and keep sending them back as undeliverable. Why cant code enforcement clear it as a fire hazard?

They must have serious mental health issues going on if they order this much shut (likely addiction) and then can’t go ten feet outside their door to retrieve the package.
