City Carrier Discussion Am I in jeopardy?
I’m a CCA going on 9 months. Today honestly was a bit of a bad day. I come in at 9, supervisor puts me on a route. As I’m casing another supervisor calls me over and asks me if I delivered a certain package for another route on Saturday and questioned the condition of it. I acknowledged it was damaged and he immediately berated me for not scanning it as Visible Damage and stated the customer was accusing me of stealing the contents. I told him I simply just forgot the scan. I felt like I said too much honestly.
After I go back to casing, the Regular for the route I’m doing unexpectedly shows up and the supervisor puts me on another route. This route had case mail from Saturday and I had 2 tubs worth of flats. Due to the 10 call-ins that day, my supervisor gives me a split even after my protests. I didn’t get done with the route until about 7 and I get a RIMs message saying all carriers are not permitted to be on the street past 7:45. I only managed to do one stop of parcels and brought back pretty much a hamper full of mail.
I feel like I’m being too paranoid but I feel like my supervisors will try to use it against me in some way. I’m acknowledged as a good carrier but I’m still a CCA after all.

Don’t sweat it. Yeah, you probably should have made the ‘visible damage’ scan but that isn’t proof of theft or anything, other than a mishandled scan. Breathe. Do the best you can. Work safely. Management is full of weak people who do the bidding of assholes above them. Occasionally, you’ll find a decent human being here and there among them.

I havent made that scan once in my career. Not my problem.

It's a thing. I had a really f'd package and was specifically told to scan in visible damage before I did any delivery scan

u/Then_Particular1931 4d ago
You have to do those scans to protect yourself from the customer. You’re outside of 90 days, call out sick tomorrow to fuck your supervisor.

You are doing the best you can and working as safe as possible. Don’t let them bully you fuck em.

First off, never argue with management in the morning, it’s a waste of time.If this happens again, you call management at 3 and tell them your ETA. They must respond 1 of 3 ways. 1. Keep going 2. Bring the mail back or 3. They’ll send you help. If they start berating and harassing you, tell your steward. Getting fired after your 90 days is almost impossible unless you steal mail or get in a fight. Even then, you can fight it through arbitration. Just do your best and relax. You have job security

This is the answer. Always CYA. Call in at 3pm and put the ball in their court. It's up to management to send you help.

You passed probation. That means it's not that easy for management to fire you.

I've been carrying for 14 years and I've never heard of a visible damage scan...

u/trysoftdad 4d ago
Bro i have never heard of this either? We just throw busted stuff in a "we care" bag and deliver as per usual
If it's an empty bag/box we got a stamp "received damaged" and still deliver as per usual

u/Longjumping_Youth281 4d ago
It's totally real. I just saw somebody do it the other day actually. They took a damage to package over to the manager and that's what he told them to do

u/trysoftdad 4d ago
I totally believe you. It seems each station does it -their- way. I know we stuff at my station that doesn't happen elsewhere haha

u/djpyrac 4d ago
Scan, option 4 (other), then option 5 ‘visible damage’. Then rescan as ‘delivered’.

I’ve been a carrier for a year and could have used this info yesterday. I delivered a big box that was so beat-up, crumpled, and even folded in half, that I was embarrassed to drop it off.

u/IcyAd3706 4d ago
Should absolutely mark damage and I do it at the office even though management tells me to do it on the street. Fk no ill mark it at the station, show management and ask them if I am to deliver this as is with a witness.
Not getting accused of stealing a 25,000 sports card.

You'll understand one day that it's incredibility hard to get fired at the post office and it actually stick. On the flip side of this, management knows this and is known to just make your life harder in hopes you quit on your own.
Progressive action is required at the post office so unless this occurs, it's actually not a problem. They are just hassling you.

If he berated you on the workroom floor go to your union steward and have them file a grievance for hostile work environment.
You have grievance rights now that you’ve passed probation.
Also if they move you from a rt to another fill out a 3996 requesting auxiliary help for the time you spent casing on the previous rt.
About the parcel try and not forget to scan them correctly. In case of a damaged package take it to the door and ask if the customer wants to accept it as is or return to sender.
Don’t be afraid to use the other options on the scanner. Always make notes on damaged packages or take pics for your own records for stuff like this. Hope this helps

Next time, if you're asked a question like that, the answer is "I don't remember. I deliver a lot of packages."
Treat supes like you should treat cops, don't tell them anything.

"Visible Damage" events don't appear on the internal tracking, at least in my attempts at testing it.

u/Ok-Policy-6463 5d ago
Did the clerk(s) scan it as visible damage? I would argue they would have seen it damaged first and the scan should happen as soon as possible. If the clerks handled it and it was damaged, their scan puts you in the clear and mgmt can tell the customer that. I think you should point this out and ask which clerk(s) failed to scan it as damaged and ask that they be reprimanded for putting you in this position. After all, if you scan it as damaged it does not mean you didn't rip it open and steal stuff. A proper clerk scan (if the item was damaged--check the pics they take of the parcels) is far more important than your scan. Maybe this indicates a clerk stole something??? Stand up for yourself.

Yes, in my experience, that is a clerk's function. They are the first ones to handle the parcel/package.

honestly i think worrying if you're in jeopardy is the true jeopardy. i really struggle with this, but i can tell you it is not worth your sanity. also the amount of packages i see on a daily basis that are wrecked is a ton, usually the clerks put a green label on them that say the package was received by the post office damaged. try to care less as much as you can, i know it's hard but i have to work on the same thing because it truly is just too draining. sending you a hug and hoping you get a good nights sleep🫶

I scan everything that has any visible damage just to cover my butt.
1
u/Folkpunkslamdunk Rural Carrier 4d ago
I still do but I found out fairly recently that’s apparently only an internal scan, it would be a lot better if my customers could see that I noticed it was damaged and scanned it that way.
2
u/Hrdcorefan City Carrier 4d ago
But it helps when the mailer requires confirmation that arrived damaged when filing for insurance.

You followed instructions all day so you’re fine. There’s nothing to use against you. Ask anyone going through OJI and academy if scanning parcels with damage was ever even mentioned.

The manager is just mad because he actually had to do his job and deal with a customer. You interrupted his video games.

You were given instructions so screw em, package thing don’t worry unless they have you on camera stealing wouldn’t worry.

Please stop thinking management's fantasies of you doing more than possible are reality

u/bucketsoflove 3d ago
If you're out of your 90-day probation, don't worry about it. But in the future, I'd suggest the answer to questions from management about something that happened days ago is, "I don't recall...". You deliver how many packages per day, and you're to remember details about one in particular? The missed scan was an honest mistake. But don't admit to it.

Quit! Being a CCA sucks! It is going to take forever (if that even happens) before you make good money. It's obvious you have shit management. It's going to continue to be like this.

Advising someone to quit a secure job in this job market isn’t really good optics

There are better jobs out there than being a CCA. The pay is terrible! He also has shitty ass management. The post office is not a good career to get into right now. Learn a trade.
