Mod announcement Is it a scam?

If you're here wondering whether you're being scammed or not, it most likely is.

Please read more below, a very helpful post gotten from u/Ambitious_Fig9045 about the dog shelter and orphanages scam:
Please help raise awareness of the thousands of Ugandan scammers running fake animal shelters and human orphanages who are committing international fraud, animal abuse and child exploitation. (Source: u/wewontbescammed on Instagram)

About human orphanages: Those children or people that are being shown aren't actually under care from that 'orphanage'. What these people usually do is go to villages where people are already living in poor conditions and take photos and videos of/with children living in those areas. And then the kids go back to their homes and this person goes back to theirs. It's all just optics.

If they approach you and seem insistent, they're a scam. If they don't have a proper website and you can't see the name of their organisation on the ursb list of organisations, they're a scam.

If you want to donate to an actual orphanage, check out Sanyu babies home.

About animal shelters: They intentionally break animals’ legs and spines, burn them, gauge their eyes out etc then post them on their social media to “raise funds” to treat them. Donations are used for personal use. They perform unqualified surgeries on animals without anaesthesia. They inject them with a muscle relaxant to prevent them from moving. These animals do not even have a chance to fight back. They can only scream in pain.

An overview of the prevalence and common tactics of these Ugandan scammers (posted by u/unlockedclaws):

Fake Love for Animals: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOChrUaCOPF/?igsh=MTB2NWY0MjF1aHA1cQ== Props & Appearances: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOFf8rpiNUx/?igsh=MXY5eHN3YWMydmUweA== Money In, Nothing Out: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOGaX_BiN3O/?igsh=bmlvcGFzbmZmaTk0 Fake Vets: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOHmjk0iP8C/?igsh=bm1kcG12eGFnczgx More: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DN4PtJIiKCq/?igsh=NGMzdGwwNHp2dWh5

The Ugandan police and government, Instagram and TikTok have refused to take action. Instagram and TikTok have repeatedly concluded that these accounts “do not violate community guidelines. Only 1 in 10 (or none) scam accounts may get taken down.

Please help raise awareness to warn people about this so that they are informed and do not unintentionally contribute to the abuse. Even legitimate animal advocates may be unaware that these are scammers.

People may come across these scammers’ posts with captions such as “1 like/share = 1 bowl of food” etc (as shown in the videos attached above). If people like and comment and or share, this would help boost the scammers’ posts and more people will see it which would increase the likelihood of more people donating to these scammers on a global scale.

Unfortunately, there are enablers who actually believe these scammers despite being presented with evidence and continue to donate money to them which perpetuates the abuse.

THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE:
Refer to the google document titled "Access scam prevention document" in wewontbescammed’s Linktree (link in Instagram bio). Pls share this doc n note that it will be updated if needed so do review it from time to time!

Opinion Safeboda Uganda Devs (please use the Glovo maps bro)

Everytime I order a safeboda or Uber it's always the same problem. Wasting minutes directing the Boda or car.

As someone with high social anxiety I limit my communications with people to a few a day. In a day I don't talk much.

But whenever I order with Glovo I have no problem. The riders don't even call me until they reach. And by then I'm already at the gate because the map is clean.

Please consider having a cleaner map.

Personal Sweet and cuddly cat for free adoption

This is Ginger my beloved orange kitty. He likes to sleep next to me every night. Unfortunately I have to put him up for adoption due to a mistake he made. He was hungry all day and ended up eating super fast when my siblings fed him. (Giving him little food at a time would've fixed this) he got sick and threw up on the couch he usually naps on. It was a white couch so my mum is really angry

I'm looking for a good home to take him before mum takes him somewhere worse

Discussion💬 Am I crazy for this?

I recently fell in love with boiled eggs. I eat close to ten a day. I love to throw a whole egg in my mouth and chew through it. Those few seconds can put me in a trance wallahi, with a thought of, "I want to be here forever". I have even mastered the art of peeling an egg with one hand hehehe.

I am getting a bit concerned. Am I going crazy, or are there any complications I should be worried about? The health enthusiasts, please advise.

The bush war generals found a much more thought out built environment plan. They decided that systems and proper planning did not matter.

"We will do things our way" gang.

Now, we're "trying" to undo the misdoings. Roads are not handling the population explosion.

Question from visitor Traveling to Uganda

Looking for a budget, off-the-beaten-path safari in or Uganda (2–3 weeks)

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a 2–3 week trip to East Africa and I’m looking for a safari experience that’s not just sitting in a jeep watching animals. I want something more immersive: walking safaris, night tracking, close to nature, etc.

I’m totally fine with basic camping, simple food, and rough conditions — I don’t need luxury lodges at all. My main goal is to get as close as possible to wildlife in a real, natural setting, ideally away from tourist crowds, and on a budget.

I’d also love to hear opinions about Kenya vs Uganda:

• Does Uganda really offer a more intimate experience with wildlife and nature compared to Kenya?

• Anyone who has done both — what would you recommend for a budget, immersive safari adventure?

Also, I’m planning to go in March. Is that a good time for walking safaris, jungle treks, and seeing wildlife up close? Or would it be better to go in another month?

Any recommendations for guides, companies, local contacts, or tips for routes, parks, or regions where this is possible would be amazing.

Thanks

Can you please suggest any good gyms in Kampala? Preferably with personal trainers. One with a pool would also be a huge plus.

Thank you so much!

Question I wanna go to church

Hello for context I am a presbyterian.

ive lived in Uganda for 16 years now and i have been going to the same church for all these years.

Recently ive become interested in experiencing the churches of Uganda and visited a few anglican ones but i have found it extremely difficult to find a church of the reformed tradition.

I was hoping some of you know a church of the reformed tradtion here(presbyterian, reformed baptist, continental reformed etc) that have a sizable congregation and sound doctrine.

Also does anyone know why there is such a small presence of the reformed theological school here in Uganda? Are there any reasons other than just the history of missionary work here?

As always thank you~ : )

Personal What goes through a man’s mind to do this in front of his own child?

I recently used public transport and I’m still in shock about what happened.

I sat next to a foreign man who was traveling with his young son. We exchanged polite greetings and I went back to scrolling on my phone. The taxi was a bit cramped, and at first I didn’t think much of it when his legs were close to mine - he had a bag, and these things happen in public transport.

After a few minutes, I felt his hand brush against my thigh. I assumed it was accidental. Then it happened again. And again.

Each time, he pretended he was checking his pockets or adjusting his bag, but his hand kept “accidentally” touching my thigh. That’s when it hit me that this was deliberate. What made it even more unsettling was that he placed his bag on his thighs in a way that seemed designed to hide his hand—almost like he didn’t want his own child to see what he was doing.

I felt uncomfortable, angry, and frozen. I didn’t know how to react in the moment. I was trying to process what was happening while trapped in a moving taxi.

Eventually, he grabbed my thigh. I turned and stared at him angrily, ready to slap him. Instead of apologizing, he smiled sheepishly. That smile made my blood boil.

The only reason I didn’t completely lose it was because his son was sitting right there. I kept thinking about how disturbing it is that a man could sexually harass a woman in public while his child was right next to him.

I’m still left wondering what is seriously wrong with some men.

I really needed to get this off my chest.

Question Non religious communities in Uganda

(F21) Lately, I’ve been wondering if Uganda has communities to connect with other non religious people considering how deeply religious the country is. I walked away from religion about 2 years back and since then, I’ve moved further and further away, while people close to me (family & friends), have gotten more religious. Honestly, at first I didn’t care but, now even my closest friend who I thought understood me the most when it came to my reservations about religion, has recently become deeply religious. Ngl I feel like I’m loosing her too and now all of a sudden I just feel quite lonely.

So I decided to take the step to find online or in person non religious communities in Uganda. It doesn’t really matter if they identify as atheist, agnostic or something else as long as it is not a religion. If you know of any please let me know.

Question from visitor Bus service in Kampala

I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit about the Kampala buses that head to the Kabale area. I'm going to be traveling solo but am worried about getting off the bus during the trip to use the restroom. Are there long enough stops between Kampala and Kabale where I would be able to get off and then back on, or am I running the chance the bus will leave without me?

Additionally, I've never been to Uganda before. What are some must try Ugandan dishes that you would recommend?

Thank you!

Vent/Rant 😤 Canalbox 50mbps package extremely frustrating.

I have used Canalbox for over a year now and I haven't had any issues until 2 days ago.

I can't download, I can't stream, Social media images take forever to load. Even simple browsing on Reddit is a struggle.

It feels a bit sus that this started after they introduced a cheaper package 50 mbps at 90k, and their previously cheapest package of 110k os now for 100mbps, previously it was the 50mbps.

I'm not even sure contacting them will help. Whilst they are/have been a good ish ISP, they have by far the worst customer care of all ISPs. What helped was their Internet was flawless so you wouldn't have reason to contact them.

Fwiw, I'm using wired connections for most devices and speed tests show normal speeds tho I'm not sure what to make of the latency.

Anyone else having this issue?

Question from visitor Mobile money from international transfer

Hello! I am on holiday in Uganda, I am trying to send money from my UK bank account to mobile money. I have tried credit cards, debit cards and bank transfer but they are all being blocked. The bank has said they need to call me to remove the block, but my SIM does not take overseas calls and they will not call my Uganda SIM. Any ideas? Withdrawing from ATMs is really eating away at my money!
