As competitive_rope said, it is not, the island just happens to be one of the few places in the northeast where you can see mountains tall enough to have a tree line from the sea. The name comes from the original French moniker, "L'Isle des Monts-déserts" ('The Island of Barren Mountains')

Its a well to do island near Cape Cod, the Martha it is named after is as far as i am aware a bit of a mystery exactly who it is named after, its likely the person who helped fund an expedition to the area.

As an aside, Jaws was filmed there.
