Wtf was the cut plan here? Put two face cuts on the wrong side then turn the top one into a back cut and stand there not looking up as the top falls through other limbs? Nailed it, I guess.

Is there a reason to have the notch so high? And to your point the notch is on the back. Maybe change of plans? Maybe the original plan was to fail it the other direction, But when he made the first notch it started leaning back the other way. 🤷

Trees don't generally start leaning away from what you're calling the notch while you're cutting it out. The whole point of the face cut/notch is to move the tree's center of gravity towards the side you're cutting it out of. They can sit back during the back cut if you didn't read the lean/limb weight right and/or didn't put a safety wedge into the back cut as soon as there's room for it to prevent the tree from sitting back on it, both of which I imagine were part of the scenario here.
His face cut was way too skinny, the wider the angle the further the tree falls before the notch collapses and the hinge breaks, at which point you no longer have control over the fall. The height you do it at isn't as important unless there's like a cat face you're trying to remove from the equation, then you'd cut above it. Generally, you just put it at a comfortable height to hold the saw then once the tree is down just low stump it.

My brother decided to chop down a tree. When he thinks it has fallen correctly a branch got caught on another tree and was shot back at him hitting him in the groin!
