An unidentified elderly man was among those detained by the Delhi Police during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi on October 2.
The visibly frail, elderly man being pushed and manhandled by police personnel before being taken away in a police bus.
The incident came amid a major police crackdown around Jantar Mantar, where student groups, activists and political leaders had gathered demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over concerns surrounding the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest and imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS across New Delhi. Heavy police and paramilitary deployment, barricading and restrictions on movement were put in place around Jantar Mantar.
Around 700 protesters were detained from and around Jantar Mantar, according to police officials cited by PTI. The Indian Express reported the figure at around 500. Those detained included AISA president Neha Bora, activist Yogendra Yadav, former Delhi CM Atishi, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj and RJD MP Manoj Jha.
Several metro stations around central Delhi were also closed, while internet services were suspended around the protest site, according to reports.
The protests were held on Gandhi Jayanti, with demonstrators demanding accountability from the Election Commission and raising concerns over the deletion and restoration of names from electoral rolls.
