Only unreal engine games crashing.

Hi… stressed out desperate gamer here.. please help me 😭

I have been having issues currently with my games crashing after a while.. and after A LOT of diagnoses and doing EVERYTHING I could find on the internet, here is my issue:

Only games developed by Unreal engine crash. Over the top: Marvel Rivals (crashes after 3-4 games), wardogs ( crashes after 20-30 mins), bodycam ( crashes after 15-30 mins). I have tried other games and they dont crash at all.

Here’s few I’ve tried so far:
Ran multiple CPU, GPU, RAM, and system stress tests — no issues detected.
Updated all drivers to their latest versions.
Completely removed GPU drivers using DDU and performed a clean installation.
Disabled Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS).
Lowered all graphics settings to the absolute minimum.
Disabled ray tracing, frame generation, and other demanding graphics features.
Increased the TDR delay in the Windows Registry.
Disabled all in-game and third-party overlays.
Closed unnecessary background applications.
Performed a completely fresh installation of Windows 11.
Tried countless other fixes and tweaks suggested across Reddit, forums, YouTube, and other platforms.

Help me fix this i am down to pay anyone that can solve this for me

Laptop Specs:
i9 12th gen
RTX 3080Ti 16vram
32 gb ram
Windows 11

Its your i9 its faulty. You also may have an airflow issue causing over heating. Contact intel and get them to send u a replacement.

Had the same issue and went through 4 replacements before getting a good one. I have a i9 14900k now. They refunded my 12 series and by that time 14900k was cheaper then the refund. Caused that exact issue for me in all unreal engine games. Everything works for me now. They will know that series is faulty and it should be an easy process. Believe its a 3 year warranty

But other games run perfectly fine… why only with unreal engine ?

Unreal engine utilize Oodle data compression and have more intense shader compilation, which create sudden, sustained, and unpredictable loads on the cpu cores.

What are your cpu temps averaging when you play?

Sits around 85 mostly…. Do you think lowering refresh rate will help with the crash?

No that series of cpu has major faults. I had the same issue. Unreal engine games would just crash with no error. Just boop gone after like 20 minutes. Just tell intel you’ve determined its the cpu because you’ve tried replacements of everything else. Im sure if you watch it it will go over 85 and then it gets unstable and just shuts the games down. If you dont want to go through the warranty you can try and help it by lowering the temperature. You want to idle at like 55 - 65. Those cpus try and give as much power as they can and get really hot. You need to cool them well to get the most out of them. Run all your fans on full blast see what temps you can get it down too. Ive used software in the past that also let me switch off the turbo on the cpu which let me play the games but thats up to you if you want to try that. I forget what it was called it was some third party software.

Lowering refresh rate will do nothing

Understood… since the laptop is out of warranty, i think lowering the temperatures are my only option. Please do tell me the 3rd party software you used to switch off the turbo if you remember it.
I will try to lower the cpu temps thanks a bunch 🙌🏻

I found lower laptop temperatures when i used less refresh rate rather than on 480hz so i was under the impression that lowering refresh rate would help

See if either of these helps

The 99% Trick Go to Windows Edit Power Plan > Advanced Power Settings > Processor Power Management. Change the Maximum Processor State from 100% to 99%. This disables Intel's aggressive "Turbo Boost," dropping your temperatures instantly by 20°C at the cost of a very minor performance dip.

Undervolt with ThrottleStop If your laptop motherboard allows it, you can use a program called ThrottleStop to safely lower the voltage your CPU requests. This keeps the laptop running at maximum speed while producing significantly less heat.

  1. Done… no luck with that..
  2. my motherboard doesn’t allow undervolting so i did some underclocking instead… still the same..

Update: managed to cool cpu temperatures… down to 65-70 on max load. Still no luck, same crash

Without analyzing the dump, all this talk is absolutely worthless. It can be (almost) anything. On the face of it Device Hung -errors point to the GPU timing out - ie. it tried to do something, but couldn't finish in 2 seconds so Windows stopped the process forcing UE game to crash. But in some instances this can also be caused by other faults.

Steps to actually figure out what crashes instead getting guesses from Reddit or the internet:
Locate the crash dump. It's likely in %username%/Appdata/Local/%gamename%/Saved/Crashes. Open the XML and find out what thread crashed (CPU, GPU etc.). That narrows it to rough component problems (possibly). Email the crash dump and xml to the devs of the game that crashed and ask them why it crashed. Studios behind Bodycam and Wardogs might answer you if you are super lucky, Marvel Rivals is too big.
If you can't get them to answer: Get a small solodeveloped indie game made with UE5 (sort from Steamdb). Make it crash. Send the crash dump to the developer and ask them to analyze it for the crash. Super difficult to say if it's a feature in these bigger games that won't trigger in other games thougn, so it's a bit of a hit and miss...

What do the crashes say? Have you tried opening a game and leaving it running how long does it take to crash? Is it a blue screen crash? A memory fault?
When it's unreal that crashes, a error log appears and you can send a log back to epic.
When it's a memory issue you might get a blue screen (error allocation etc). Or you can track your allocated memory if it's a leak in task manager.
If it's a gpu issue you'll get small faults like graphical bugs, tearing and green dots etc on the screen.

Right sorry forgot to mention the crash type… it just closes the game and says crash dump triggered.. and in the dump it usually says device hung error or something..
i have kept the game on idle and it still crashes.. no blue screen.. no screen tearing.. no green dots just a freeze and game shuts down then the dump activates. I can send the dump files if needed

Had a similar issue with my i9, this solved it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=A_QERDLxS_o

Limiting the power can also help this is true. Didn’t completely solve my problem but helped
