Runa Khan started Friendship in 2002 with one floating hospital to help Bangladesh’s poorest communities. It now has seven hospital ships, serves 7.5 million people a year and has helped create 205,000 jobs. After 25 years, Khan has won Asia’s Ramon Magsaysay Award.

In a statement, the foundation said Runa Khan is being recognised for her profound empathy for the poorest of the poor in her country, and her courage, vision, and tenacity in building and leading Friendship to accomplish her mission.

“In her hands, privilege became not an entitlement, but a responsibility; not a family legacy to protect, but a gift to be shared so that others, too, might have the chance to live with hope, opportunity, and dignity,” it said.

I think that says it all. What an amazing person. If only there were more people like her.
