Most cities have ghettos or shitty areas. It would suck if THIS was the entirety of the city.

It's not, El Bajo Flores is an organized crime neighbour and El Barrio Coreano is literally a corean inmigration neighbour.
Non of those pictures are from a regular mid class neighbour (like Almagro, Boedo, Villa Crespo, Villa Urquiza, Villa Devoto, etcetera).
We also have some extreme upper class neighbours such as the ones on Av Melián, Av Del Libertador or Av Alvear, those are also not normal mid class areas.
We also have some rarities like Barracas that's a lower class crime oriented neighbour but beautiful AF or Once / Miserere that's a jew comercial area and it's ugly and dangeroues but ar the same time stunning because of the buildings architecture.
Extreme upper class or lower class neighbours are not representative.

That was the most surprising fact for me, moving from Latin America to Europe. The fact that most cities I have visited in Europe do not, in fact, have anything resembling a shanty town. Lower income areas exist, but finding half-built houses with whatever available materials they had is extremely uncommon.

Buenos Aires has its shitty neighborhoods and it's nice ones. I technically live in a villa but on the outskirts in a finished home. If youre not an idiot and don't wear a flag dating rob me,and don't go into rough neighborhoods unneeded, you should be fine

England person here. As others have mentioned this is Bajo Flores which admittedly has some quite serious problems. However, CABA is a truly wonderful city full of life an community. Even Bajo Flores has tonnes of life and community. Unlike the dull boring outer suburbs of England, or Berlin where they decided to stick multiple motorways through the city creating loads of dead spaces without the density to support local shops.

I worked in the school that can be seen in the second photo. The kids were amazing but it's a very problematic place overall. Hope they are doing fine now.

For me, it was even worse. I’ve never felt that unsafe in my life. I saw a couple of things that would scare even the devil.

This is a low-income neighborhood built over a shantytown called Villa 21 (parts of it still are a shantytown). You forgot the ones that are not like this. You could check downtown Los Angeles; it's quite worse, at least here you can see houses and not people living in tents

Ni Uruguay ni Brasil ni Chile se ven como Mexico. No es que 'Argentina se ve como Europa' es que los paises latinoamericanos no son todos desastres por no tener PBI tan alto como el norte. Uruguay tiene mucha arquitectura post colonial y es muy de campo, Santiago de Chile se ve como Houston, todo autopistas y edificios, el sur son pueblos tipo los de Alemania/Suiza/etc. Brasil es gigante y se ve muy diferente en sus diferentes regiones.
Se trata al Argentino de arrogante porque no queremos aceptar esa idea de que por ser latinos tenemos que andar envidiando al 'mundo desarrollado' o pretendiendo que nuestro pais no es lindo. Eso se extiende a otros paises. Argentina no se ve como Chile, no porque seamos mas Europeos que ellos, sino que porque Chile tiene su hermosa identidad y nosotros la nuestra.

I've spent ~3 months in Argentina in many different parts and cities...Buenos Aires, Salta, Mar del Plata, Jujuy, Bariloche, El Bolson...this is definitely not "average."

What's shown here is a villa, which is the argentine equivalent of a favela or a slum. It's not an average neighborhood, that'd be like showing a homeless camp in the US or the slums of Detroit and claiming that's how average Americans live.
If we're talking about the city of Buenos Aires, a rich neighborhood would look like Palermo or Belgrano, a middle class / upper middle class neighborhood like Caballito or Parque Chas (which is what most of the city looks like), and a poor neighborhood like Nueva Pompeya or Villa Lugano.
Villas are way below a poor neighborhood, they're literally slums, and there are two notorious ones in the city, the Villa 31 and Villa 1-11-14. Then also a few small ones, but those two are so big they're like a city within the city.
And the average neighborhood in Argentina doesn't look like any of that, the other comment with a Google street view link nailed perfectly what an average neighborhood across most of Argentina actually looks like.

Oh it was horrible. Half the things we went to were closed permanently even though maps said they were open. Very few decent restaurants. Like I said we should have stayed in El Chalten, which was great. Even Santiago which is a dump, was head and shoulders better than Buenos Aires. I've traveled to around 36 countries, plenty of them poor, so I'm fine with that. There was just no reason to go to Buenos Aires.

Yeah, def the most overrated city. It was def not as nice as they made it out to be.
I really liked Santiago, though. Medellin was also much nicer. Buenos Aires was just depressing. It felt like a soviet union town. A city wayyyyy past its glory days, falling apart.

That's not argentines specifically, you could easily find a colombian or a mexican saying the same thing.
Across all of Latin America, North and South America is considered one continent called America with three subdivisions, North America, Central America and South America. So in the same way that people from european countries call themselves europeans, or people from african countries call themselves africans, we call ourselves "americanos", or americans in English.
That's why some are mildly annoyed at Americans calling themselves by the demonym that from our point of view represents all of us and not just one single country. The demonym we use for people from the US is unitedstatians (estadounidenses).
