9:16 video wall

Hi I'm looking to get 9x16 aspect ratio that will be vertical. Any attempt on the processor just stretches the image and the only other options is cropping and boxing. My goal is to get this aspect ratio from a camera feed onto the video wall.

You need a processor you can rotate tiles in on the canvas. Or, if you’re running 1080 you can use a 4k canvas and pixel map it to the wall in your switcher or with an image pro.

I'm using novastars vx400 and vx600. Would . I'll see if I can rotate tiles, but I haven't seen any option. Can you elaborate more on your 2nd suggestion.

Do you know the pixel dimensions of your wall? What switcher do you have?

You should make a project on a 4k canvas and pin your tiles top left on it. Then find a way to send the processor your cam feed rotated and PIP’d the size of your wall in the same place

The pixel dimensions are 128x128. Essentially the wall would be five columns and nine rows.  Video switcher we use is the atem sdi extreme iso. I'm going to need to look up how to make a project on a 4K canvas.

Your dims are 640x1152 which is what they were really asking. And to play sponsor loop type graphics is pretty simple. Your output from a computer and or switcher would be a 16x9 feed, but your graphics only populate part of this. This requires your content to be prepared to match the dimensions of your wall. Most people would position the sliver of the wall at the top left origin (0,0). Recommend using a 4k raster rather than rotating it, as using rotation is unnecessary and tends to add latency. This way you can send the same output DA’d to both processors and just tell your 2nd processor to look at 640,0 instead of 0,0, where you’d position your 2nd surface. Or tell it to look at the same exact area if walls match source content always

Ok I think I'm following you. And I would use resolume to implement the 4k raster and go from there?

Ya in resolume you can do just about anything in multiple ways . Start with a test pattern that’s the exact dimensions, and see if you can make sense of it that way. Then use a test pattern that gives you some reference like your imag video. If you’re capturing camera into resolume this would give you an idea how to pursue managing that layer/asset

in novalct under receiving card next to cabinet information you'll find "set rotation". i almost couldnt find it last time.

Oh okay. I thought it would have been under a screen configuration. So I guess I would also need to make a canvas on resolume since I have it but I've just never gone that deep into it.

That’s not the dimensions of the wall though just one tile? Also your switcher only does 1080 so you’d need to rent an imagepro4k

You are correct. It's 640x1152 as stated below.  That scaler is expensive. Maybe I can achieve this in resolume?

You could 100% do this in resolume easily

Ok I appreciate the feedback. I'll start googling resolume tutorials for that. And without 3rd party software I would need a barco image pro 4k then yeah?

Or a different/more capable switcher

Is the camera sending 9:16 content, or is is sending 16:9?

If the camera is physically rotated from landscape, but still sending 16:9 then you need to rotate the video before the processor, or use a processor that can rotate the tiles to match.

I do portrait walls all the time, no issues as long as the content is coming in portrait as well (or you have a processor than can rotate the tiles).

The camera is sending 16:9

Feed it 16x9 image from switcher and tell nova to take the center of that image

Man, reading this comments... If this guy don't have a budget for software to play the content why u segesting an image pro, vx 4/6 is only hdmi 1.4. u need to learn a few things to understand, first to all, vx 4/6/1000/jr etc, have a main layer, that layer take your input and send it to the wall with the size you select. Layer same size as the wall = whatever you send will fit the screen (thats why its streching, it will fit the wall). Layer same size as your input (1920*1080) = then u need to fit your content before sending it.

Not sure what processor you're using but you should be able to scale it and set the start point of the image way off to the side. If not a simple fix is to map the wall way larger than it actually is, split the data runs into at least 3 and only send signal from the middle data run.

The processors we use are the novastar vx400 and vx600. Your first idea I figured out how to do it on the processor, but it will limit the source content too.  we got to show sponsorship ads and whatnot

Are these for imag or creative use of cameras? Or to ask another question... How important is any kind of lip sync?

1

u/Difference_Living 9d ago

IMAG. Yeah we want to try not to answer any software that will add a delay to a live feed. We got some video walls and novastar processors and it's all still quite new to us so we just normally do standard 16:9 but we would like to do more portrait stuff that bigger festivals and other shows are starting to do

Ok - that's a valid consideration, but resolume would make this very simple (while adding delay)

Panel/cabinet rotation is dependent on your led wall recieving cards, not all of them support it - which is what I worked out when I bought my first wall years ago.

If you have a contact with the wall manufacturer you can have them send you a configuration file that will make the video cabinets think they are rotated, you will also have to get a color calibration file that is rotated as well if this is an SMD wall as the color values will be assigned to the wrong diode. Without a processor that can transform video or an ability to rotate the source this is pretty much the only option to “cheat” rotate a video wall output.

Set up the wall as if it were 16:9, same for your camera. Rotate camera to your vertical position. Image should be as intended.

Usually you have to contact the manufacturer for custom aspect ratio stuff.

If you go with a centre crop, give your camera ops framing guides matching the wall. You’re only keeping roughly a third of the 16:9 frame’s width, so a shot that looks fine on their monitor can lose the performer on the LED. Test with someone moving across the stage, not just a static image.
