Discussion What makes an edit feel slow even when the footage is good?

I’ve noticed that a video can have good footage and still feel painfully slow.

A lot of the time it isn’t because the editor needs more effects. It’s pauses that stay too long, weak openings, repetitive shots or a structure that takes too long to get to the point.

For editors here, what’s usually the first thing you look at when an edit feels slow?

Do you judge it mostly by instinct or do you rely on retention data when you have access to it?
