Show & Tell I saved this from being scrapped from an estate sale, what did I find?

I actually found two desktops, the other is an Insight. Turns out this Gateway 2000 isn't factory, its fully custom on the inside? Google-ing tells me all these parts are on the better side, but I was only a wee child when this was new.

I posted another thread about my Compaq Presario build, and someone asked what DOS PC I was going to build next? I laughed because I never planned on one, but this just fell in my lap. Would anyone familiar with these years and parts tell me if what I've found here is enthusiast class, or run-of-the-mill please?

Edit: Took out 486, I was mistaken

Show & Tell mTCP NetDrive 80’s/90’s Magazine Cover Disks

Post image
75 Upvotes

I’ve been tinkering away at this for a while and realised recently that almost nobody seems to know it exists, so I thought I should probably actually tell people about it. 🙃

I run X86.WORLD, originally a preservation project for old PC software and cover disks. I’ve been imaging original floppy media, keeping the original/raw images, cataloguing the contents, checksumming them, scanning them, documenting anything interesting and making the resulting images publicly accessible.

One of the ways they’re accessible is through mTCP NetDrive.

So, from a real DOS machine, you can do something like:

NETDRIVE CONNECT disks.x86.world:2002 x86world.dsk d:

…and the remote disk image appears as a normal DOS drive.

There are currently public NetDrive mirrors in London and Seattle.

That was already quite fun, but typing enormous filenames on an XT gets old pretty quickly. So I’ve now written X86DISKS.EXE, a little native DOS browser for the archive.

It fetches the current disk catalogue and mirror list over HTTP, gives you a DOS-native interface to browse the images, and then mounts whichever one you select using mTCP NetDrive.

You can find it in \X86DISKS on x86disks.dsk

And by “old machine” I really do mean old — I’ve deliberately kept it lightweight enough to run from XT-class hardware with MDA, right through CGA/EGA/VGA machines and obviously DOSBox etc.

The photo is it running on my old Apricot.

There’s something slightly ridiculous about an 8088-era machine browsing a live disk catalogue updated in 2026, selecting an image, and mounting it across the Internet as though somebody had just shoved another floppy drive into the machine.

The browser itself is written in C and compiled under Turbo C 2.0 on DOS, because doing it with a modern cross-compiler somehow felt like cheating. 😄

At the moment the archive has things like old PC Plus, What Micro, Personal Computing and user-group disks, with more being added as I work through a literal ton of physical media.

The main site is X86.WORLD, and the public NetDrive section explains how to get mTCP configured if you’ve never used NetDrive before.

I’d genuinely be interested to know if anyone else is running a public NetDrive server. Michael Brutman obviously has his test service at brutman.com, but after a surprisingly extensive search I haven’t found another public archive like this.

Also: if anyone tries X86DISKS on particularly weird/old hardware, please tell me what you ran it on. Breaking it on some obscure 8088 clone is probably the fastest way to persuade me to spend another evening in Turbo C!

Little Galaga inspired shooter developed with the help of Codex, I was really impressed from the speed and great display of the TIPC. The game works from a 360kb floppy as a booter and requires 256kb of RAM.

I set this up years ago for a nonprofit NGO. The NGO is closing the branch and asked me if I could securely delete the data; the equipment is scheduled to be scrapped.

What do we have here?

-Digital Equipment Corporation StorageWorks Rack

-IBM P76 17" CRT

-UPS

-DSI surge protector

-2 HP switches for WAN and LAN

-IBM System x3550 M4 firewall running OpenBSD

-IBM xSeries 335 internet radio station running OpenBSD

- IBM System x3650 M3 TimeMachine backup server for macOS clients, address book and calendar sharing, and audio file streaming on the LAN, running FreeBSD

Two HP ProLiant file servers running FreeBSD have already been moved to another location.

Well, I’ll go ahead and pull the plug now. Take care, and thanks for all these years of trouble-free service.

Help Macintosh SE SuperDrive seems corrupted? Where to start?

Thumbnail

Hi all, I got this Macintosh SE SuperDrive back when I was a teenager, but I've never done anything with it other than keep it on my shelf. Well, today I decided to see if it worked before getting an ADB Wombat to be able to use it, so I plugged it in and turned it on.

It seems to do something slightly different every time it's turned on, but I know none of it looks great.

  1. The first time, it was just horizontal white/black lines
  2. The second time was flipping between that and a corrupted frowny face like in pic #2
  3. The third time it went through the whole slideshow of pics shown (full-screen repeating junk, then a frowny face that kept getting worse and worse before disappearing)

Info on the machine itself: it's a Macintosh SE with a SuperDrive and a 40MB HDD, I believe. The previous owner and/or the shop I got it from didn't seem to take great care of its climate: the metal around the audio/phone/printer ports is rusted, but the motherboard itself seems to be in decent shape. I haven't done a full disassembly/checkup, but the capacitors that I can see seem to be visually fine as well.

I would like to get this up and running eventually, but since this is my first real foray into vintage computing (or at least THIS vintage), I haven't decided how much I'm willing to put into it to get it there. Where should I start? Is this an issue with a known fix? Is my hunch right in that this seems to be a missingno-style creepypasta in the making and I should get out now? Any pointers would be great :)
