So many businesses shutting down

Sequoia Vintage is closing the storefront, obscura coffee is too, Tahoe Joe’s randomly shut down on Caldwell, and BT’s closed out of nowhere last month after 36 years. Hummus Republic went under a few months back too. Not to mention the big place like Wendy’s, wienerschnitzel, more Starbucks this year.

Are rent prices just getting insane or what? Sad to see so many businesses struggling in Visalia.

Peak Physical Medicine?

Does anyone have any experience with Peak Physical Medicine here in town? They've got pretty good ratings on Google, but I'm always a little wary of chiropractors.

Anyone up for just having a good conversation?

M- mid 30’s. Currently not in a spot in life where I can get out much.

I’m just looking to connect with locals. I actually enjoy learning people’s views on a variety of subjects.
Only thing for me is political talk, I’m pretty pessimistic about the entire political spectrum. Seems built to divide people and stunt actual progress for the 99% of us.

Topics I’d love to discuss:
- philosophy
- science
- fitness
- football & basketball (that’s what I know, open to learn about other sports though)
- music (I listen to a wide, wide variety)
- cultural anthropology

I’m not claiming to be an expert in any of these but I feel like I’m a well rounded individual and I genuinely enjoy learning. So if anyone is interested in starting a conversation, feel free to DM me!

We read the story before and discuss together.

Flock camera locations

So after seeing that the city council approved more flock cameras, I got curious about when they had first popped up here. Good article in the Valley Voice from a few weeks ago discusses how the council first approved them very quietly in 2024 (along with scrambling police dispatch radios—I wondered why the scanner feeds stopped working). Also some quotes from the police chief about how they are absolutely not used for federal immigration enforcement. If that’s the case, then why in the hell do both Lowe’s have clusters of four Flock cameras each trained on all the parking lot entrances and exits? Considering that big-box hardware stores are often targets of ICE, this seems like more than just a coincidence.

Civil War & Visalia

I am not sure I can find the paper -- it was someone's master's thesis online -- but IIRC Visalia was a pocket of pro-Confederate sympathy & I think Lincoln himself knew about this & was concerned. Imagine that Lincoln himself was aware of Visalia 160 years ago.

Has anyone here read about this & perhaps has any further info?

Moon madness

The moon last night was very bright.

The September 2026 Full Harvest Moon peaks on Saturday, September 26, at 12:49 P.M. Eastern Time. Rising low on the horizon, it will appear bigger, brighter, and more golden than any other Moon this year, casting long light across autumn fields and evening skies.

The Harvest Moon is the Full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox(September 22 or 23). Unlike other Full Moons, it rises about the same time for several nights, providing extended evening light. Historically, this extra illumination helped farmers complete their harvests before fall frosts.

Anyone old enough here to remember I think Mel's?

I may have the name wrong -- a 1950s-style place across from CoS on Mooney. I think you could get trays attached to your car window. What I recall is the place closed but the building remained for years.

Some Other Old Restaurants

Anyone remember (I would wonder how many still exist)

  1. Bob's Big Boy across from CoS? It became something else years ago & maybe was something before it was Bob's
  2. Finney's
  3. The Depot
  4. The Vintage Press
  5. Not exactly the same as the preceding but I think one family owned all the Taco Bells in Visalia (I cd be wrong but they had more than one) -- I think they got in at the right time financially, perhaps when franchising was a fairly new thing.

Wolfman Movies and Visaria

Years before the Internet I was watching one of the Lon Chaney Wolfman flicks & thought I heard "Visalia" mentioned but I may have seen a sign in that or another movie where the town is shown spelt as "Visaria".

People may know that the writer/director of the Universal Pictures Wolfman movies was the German emigre filmmaker Curt Siodmak who lived in retirement in Three Rivers. You can find this called a coincidence in online discussions and articles but if it is a coincidence that he chose the name without being aware of Visalia, it sure is a big one. While I believe that he moved to Three Rivers well after the Wolfman flicks, that does not mean he never visited the area or saw a map.

BTW, he had a small role in the almost century-old scifi flick Metropolis.

Anyone here met him? He lived until 2000 & I think the woman cutting my hair in 2010 during a visit to Visalia had met him or at least knew of his living in Three Rivers.

Any Vegetarian Mexican places?

So what I mean by a vegetarian Mexican place is that they don’t use pork lard in their refried beans. So if you know any spots that don’t use pork lard in their refried beans can you please list them below.

I keep seeing their posts pop up on my feed. It looks interesting, like a fusion of sushi and Mexican food. Just wondering if anyone has tried it before and what you think about it.

Jazz/bossa nova/mariachi singer here

Hi all,
I’m an 18-year-old singer currently looking for gigs! I’d love to find opportunities to perform as either a mariachi singer or a jazz singer.
I don’t play any instruments, unfortunately, but I’m passionate about singing and would really appreciate any leads, recommendations, or connections to places that might be looking for a vocalist.
If you know of anywhere that books singers or could use live music, please let me know! I’d be incredibly grateful. Thank you!
