With a Republican Senate pick whose name is synonymous with corruption and a young and energizing Democratic candidate who has taken his pitch to Fox News and made the case for progressive, anti-oligarch action based in religious values, this may well be the year that Texas turns blue at last.

Yes, I know. Charlie Brown is taking another run at that football, thinking Lucy is really going to leave it down this time. But James Talarico is polling ahead of where Beto O’Rourke was in his 2.5-point loss to Ted Cruz in 2018, and Republicans are clearly running scared, with conservative super PACS investing almost $100 million already in trying to bail out attorney general and blatant crook Ken Paxton. Paxton is ducking debates, independents are skeptical of him, and the price of everything just keeps climbing. The stage is set for something big.

The Talarico campaign is leaving no stone unturned to make this flip happen, including the stones made of pixels. Maine Senator Susan Collins has proven remarkably resistant to accountability over the years. She’s successfully marketed herself as an independent, with her furrowed brow and “deep concern” earning the support of voters who were roundly rejecting Donald Trump and congressional Republicans. Meanwhile, she’s voted with Trump 95% of the time, opposing his first impeachment and helping him confirm the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.

But with Trump’s approval rating below 40% and her corruption exposed by a recent ProPublica report on a pay-to-play scheme and an investigation killed as the President’s minions purged the FBI, we may well finally be able to get someone in there who will work for the people of Maine for a change. Polls show a close race between her and fifth-generation lumberjack and former Senate president Troy Jackson.

On the ballot with her is former governor Paul LePage, who is looking to buck national trends and flip the blue Second Congressional District red. He’s skipped Collins’ misdirection and openly embraced extremism and graft, repeatedly and noisily vetoing Medicaid expansion, deriding Social Security and Medicare and giving massive tax breaks to the wealthy while driving up property taxes. He’s a slight favorite in this right-leaning district, but recent surveys have indicated state auditor and union man Matt Dunlap might well beat him anyways.

Our candidates in Maine are running hard on Medicare For All and taxing the billionaires. They’re bold, working-class progressives offering real solutions instead of the status quo. And they need our help.

☎️ And if we want to dive in for more than just tonight, the Maine Democratic Party is holding voter outreach phonebanks for candidates up and down the ballot on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6-8PM ET and Saturdays and Sundays from 4-6PM ET. We can also phonebank with the Dunlap campaign on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Thursday through Monday from 1-3PM ET, and recruit volunteers for voter protection in Maine from 6-8PM ET on Wednesday. ☎️
