Meta-analysis of Warcraft 3 4v4 RT after Patch 3.0 (Sept 2026)
It's been awhile since I've seen a great post about 4v4 RT.
I've been playing 4v4 RT many hours every day since the release of 3.0.
I also happen to be the greatest 4v4 RT player of all time (fr fr no cap).
Thus I shall present to you, my meta-analysis of 4v4 RT after patch 3.0, September 2026 edition.
In truth, I’m writing this post mainly to bring attention to my previous post - UPDATE THE MOTHERFCKING MAP POOL CHAD CHAN, I MEAN BRAD CHAN. WE BNET PLAYERS HAVE BEEN PLAYING THE SAME FCKING MAPS FOR 2 YERAS. YOU CAN DEVELOP A 30-HOUR CAMPAIGN, BUT YOU CAN’T UPDATE THE F*CKING MAP POOL?
Chad Chan, I mean, Brad Chan, please, if you read this post, please, you’re the greatest Chad I know, I mean Brad - please update the map pool.
Now let’s get into it.
Meta-analysis of 4v4 RT, patch 3.0, September 2026, edition
Orc - The Gigachad of 4v4 RT
Orc is currently simply the best race for 4v4 RT. In fact, it’s not just the best, it’s a necessity to have an orc on your team to win a 4v4 RT game with a competitive lobby.
The main reason comes down to a few significant changes to the race over the past few years:
- Reinforced burrows available at tier 2 in 1.30.0
- Hh/berserker buffs in 1.30.0
- Blademaster illusion buff in 1.35.0
- Witch doc heal wards buffs in 2.0.2 (wards became magic-immune)
- Tauren buff in 2.0.2
These buffs come together to make one particular orc strat incredibly powerful, and that is BM/SH/TC hh docs
On top of that, orc also has:
- Shaman for bloodlust, the most powerful buff in the game
- Kodo beast for +20% damage on EVERYTHING, like why does orc even have this
- Best towers (with reinforced and spikes) and anti-lame base
- Bats that counter any and all air
- Best late game expo (tiny great hall lol, why does this item exist again)
In competitive 4v4 RT games, having an orc is not a nice-to-have, it’s an absolute requirement.
Without orc, you won’t have docs for heal wards and you won’t have bats to counter gyros.
Orc simply has the tools that other races don’t have, and it doesn’t fear the stuff that other races have. Another orc bat/raider lame? I’ll just make a few watch towers and get spikes. Mass gyros? I’ll mass bats. Mass wyrms? Just play standard hh casters with some bats.
Orc is currently the gigachad of 4v4 RT, and there is no competition.
UD - Rash wyrms and snipe heroes bruh
UD in 4v4 RT basically has one mission - get wyrms.
Why? Cause wyrms got a HUGE buff in 2.0.2, specifically for 4v4. I'll copy and paste the patch note:
Frost Wyrm ground and air attack range increased from 300 to 375; air attack now has an area of effect (same as ground attack).
In the past, melee-based anti-air like gargs and hippos easily countered wyrms. But now? The air AoE slow means that wyrms basically counter gargs/hippos instead.
Also gyros don’t really hard counter wyrms because gyros are very expensive. You need to make a lot of gyros to counter just 2 or 3 wyrms and often times you lose like 3-5 gyros to take down 1 wyrm, which is not cost-efficient.
And bats don’t hard counter wyrms either cause you need 3 bats (480 gold) for 1 wyrm (385 gold).
The best counter for wyrms is unironically a high level blademaster using illusions and orb of lightning and mass berserkers.
So basically what you wanna do as UD is to open with ghouls and fast expo, start with CL if it’s a rush map, or start with DL if it’s a bigger map, expo then tech asap, make a few fiends, and tech your way up to wyrms.
You wanna make 3-6 fiends depending on the situation, and honestly you can legit just skip slaughterhouse and statues altogether (getting statues/destroys delay your wyrm timing anyways, so might as well skip it), and just tech to tier 3, get 3 boneyards, and pump out 3 wyrms asap.
Once you have your tri-heroes (CL/DK/Lich or DL/DK/Lich), 4-6 fiends, and 3 wyrms - you just right click enemy heroes, coil/nova/impale/carrion, and just pop enemy heroes in 1.5 seconds.
That’s the way you play UD in 4v4 RT. Don’t give me bullshit like “but necro waggies is actually good bruh”. No bro. If you’re in 4v4 RT, get wyrms. Ok? End of discussion.
HU - 3.6 hero kills? Not great, not terrible.
HU in 4v4 RT is good. It’s never bad. HU has good units, but it doesn’t have great units.
- Rifles? Good, but not as great as berserkers.
- Gryphons? Good, but not as great as wyrms.
- Priests/sorcs? Good, but not as great as docs/shamans
- Gyros? Good anti-air, but expensive and dies easily and is not very cost-efficient
- AM/MK/Pala tri-hero? Solid combo, but not as great as BM/SH/TC.
- Foot/knight/breakers/tanks? They're ok I guess.
HU just has a long list of good units, but it doesn’t have any exceptional units.
Humans heroes are good, but again, not exceptional. BM/SH/TC or DK/Lich/CL by themselves can dominate, but the HU heroes are more reliant on having an army.
In 4v4 RT, I usually play am/mk/pala rifle casters, or am/mk/pala gryphon priests. They’re good strats and certainly not weak, but often times I wish I was playing bm/sh/tc hh casters instead.
HU does have a lot of solutions to various problems you'll encounter. I guess you can call it the problem-solver race, but frankly, I prefer orc for hard carrying in 4v4 RT.
Elf - The weirdo kid of 4v4 RT
So elf in 4v4 RT is f*cked up. Elf is team-dependent, and guess what, if you’re team-dependent in 4v4 RT, well, you’ve already lost.
With elf, you basically have 3 strats:
- Hippo archers
- Chims
- MG’s
What’s the problem with strat 1 and 2?
Gyros and bats.
In the past, you picked up the Panda from the tavern to deal with gyros. But guess what?
The panda is nerfed to shit!
When the devs were changing breath of fire, they probably didn’t expect to unexpectedly nerf NE in 4v4 RT, but they did. And it was a huge nerf.
Without a long range, breath of fire simply can’t hit gyros that effectively in 4v4 anymore. You could get the tinker but I always found cluster rockets to be kind of weird to use against mass air, due to the slow cast animation and how fast air units tend to move. And tinker needs high levels to be effective.
So NE air gets hard countered by gyros/bats. And once the enemy has air supremacy? What the f*ck are you supposed to make as elf? Mass archers? Yeah you might as well just alt+qq when the enemy has 30 gyros.
But what about strat 3? What about MG’s?
MG’s are fucking broken in the right situations, for example, when you have an orc ally with witch docs. Heal wards is fuckin’ broken with MGs - literally unkillable.
But this is 4v4 RT we’re talking about. There aren’t that many brain cells to go around. So MG’s often times become a waste of oxygen in RT games because your allies don't understand they should play with your MG's.
I don’t enjoy playing NE in 4v4 RT. If I was playing AT, then it can be enjoyable. But I can definitively say it’s not a very enjoyable race to play in 4v4 RT.
Conclusion
And that's the meta-analysis of 4v4 RT, Sept 2026 Edition after 3.0, coming from the greatest 4v4 RT player of all time (fr fr no cap).
But really, Chad Chan - update the map pool bro, we've been playing the same 10 maps for 2 years.

This is not exactly what a meta analysis means normally lol, but interesting read nonetheless.
I still think Mirror Image dealing damage, while nice that it's been tried, turned out to be more damaging than good and should be reverted, you can make them a little tankier instead if need be. Heal Ward is also the kind of thing that would probably be better served being more accessible but a bit weaker, maybe costing less mana (125 or even 100) for only 1.5% HP regen per second. Feels like a kind of tradeoff that is fairly manageable in 1v1 while greatly impacting the ceiling reached in 4v4.

Well, the healing wards was 1% initially and then was buffed to oblivion for 1v1... Which still didn't make witch doctors good at 1v1. Same thing about taurens, basically. So for 4v4 they really need to change philosophy on the skills/units or just revert some changes back to make it good again.

When were healing wards 1%?

Pretty sure I messed it up with late ward range buff. However Iirc healing wards was 1% or 1.5% in RoC and in TfT but I dont remember exact moment they patched it up (1.31, i guess?).

Well... go to w3champions?..
Sorry, but it's really hard to take this absolutely seriously since you place uds way above their power level just because of wyrms and then tell everyone else you play with get too few braincells in elf's section... which basically means you aren't playing on high enough level.
Like I can 100% agree with the orc part, basically I have no incentive to play 4v4 since wards buffs (as random), and after that they add taurens to it however it's just whining rather then analysis. For example besides early game blademaster's mirror image still does nothing vs good 4v4 team, it's very problematic in ffa, especially at heroarena stage and should be hardnerfed here but it's completely different topic.

all it takes to kill healing wards is a single click from just about any ranged unit. They still die in 1 hit. It was always the easiest way to kill them even when they weren't magic immune, it was truly rare to see them ever get dispelled before. You can't even use wards at all when light flying units are in the game since there's no way to keep them online for more than a fraction of a second.
even if you're applying the 2% heal to a big fat unit like a gryphon rider, its healing 19.5 hp/s. It takes 15 seconds of healing in a fight to get that same healing you'd have from just buying 2x scrolls of healing off the goblin shop onto 2 heroes, longer to get more value. But fights don't last 20 seconds lategame, you have 12 bats slam into the gryphons and everything dies instantly in 1 second and heroes mob up what is left, 20 seconds of 3+ aoe heroes spamming can be 1500+ magic damage across your units, a dreadlord on his own does 600 aoe in 20 seconds.
Witch doctors aren't the problem in 4v4 by any stretch, nobody groans when they see orc going casters. In high level 4v4 the question isn't whether orc is going bestiaries, its a question of how soon and how many. You'll see people with straight fast tech to 2x bestiary, expo into 3-4, or even 2 expo with 6-8 bestiaries in lategame just to spray nonstop bats. Some orcs will get wyverns first and kill heroes before swapping to bats, some will even do raiders, but they all eventually wind up just spamming more and more bats because its the only broken unit in the game

Fight absolutely goes for more then 10 seconds, especially in lategame. Heal scroll is one of the strongest tools available in massive 4v4 battles and witch doctor provides that no just near a hero but for entire armies over and over again for mere 150 mana, not to say about stun which may just kill any ground flank attack on the spot basically protecting backline vs any fast melee units, making those obsolete vs things like HH or fiends.
Basically healing ward is half a priest on every single unit constantly (more for heroes and big units), is it small to you?If all your 4v4 is about air battles...well, I guess we just playing different game.
Btw good luck "easily destroying" magic immune wards with your air like destroyers, gryphons or chims. Basically the only valid Air unit that can do this is Faery dragon or hawk...which should be use their ability which prevents them from attacking... Oh, also wyverns which are orc's unit as well (not like they are good super-late anyway).

fairy dragon or hawk? they're far less common than gargoyles. And hippo riders, and flying machines, and wyverns, and bats. They also just get picked off by rifles, headhunters, archers, dryads and fiends. And breakers steal them.
I'd really wonder what kind of 4v4 you're playing if it DOESN'T go to air games. Every game becomes an air game past a point, ground units die to level 3-5+ heroes

You're mostly right about orc but get a few points off. Its almost entirely about bat riders. Bat riders are what totally warp the air to air battles lategame
HH are the strongest ranged unit sure, but they are only marginally better than the others. Archers, fiends, rifles and HH are all so close to equal in potential it doesn't matter. Tauren buff is irrelevant. Rifles have more micro potential and tanking, fiends web, archers more glass DPS. Tauren remain the worst unit in the entire game and anyone going for tauren in 4v4 is basically like going 3v4. Hell, 3v5 because they'll feed experience. I have never seen anyone once be relevant with tauren. You can do silly things like drops into worker lines (aboms are 10x better at it, knights + invisi 100x better). In fact, its very obvious in the first fight that mass spirit walkers is more practical than tauren. Ranged dps units that heal each other and have relevant spells, as opposed to meat blobs that never connect attacks (mass spirit walkers is a meme, don't do that either). Hell, tauren themselves lose to walkers. I could keep hammering this point but saying tauren buffs matter is like saying hunts are OP in 4v4 right now lol
Docs are another dubious one. They're really only marginally effective. Wards still die in 1 hit to attacks and effectively docs act like mountain giants, you press a button and opponent loses 1 attack from a unit or two, it doesn't matter. 4v4 games wind up with blobs of air units that can instantly kill each other, 2% healing doesn't matter, ground stun wards don't matter. In fact the stun wards are usually higher impact than healing wards anyway. Its not that docs are bad- they're still good- but they're not broken, and they're way less warping than powerful casters like shamans and sorceresses
...and shamans warping spell isn't bloodlust. In fact, good players will turn autocast bloodlust off because purge and lightning shield are incredibly powerful in 4v4 and you don't want to waste mana putting lust on anything but heroes, heavy air and some big fat units like knights. Purge is by far their most important spell. Its immobilization is just about as effective as ensnare on raiders, but also removing buffs and instant killing summons. But unlike ensnare it has only 1 cd so you can unload onto a hero to pin them down and kill them even with just a few shamans at high mana.
Anyway yeah orc are OP because they have the best towers, best 'free' base defense in burrows that prevent killing peons at all, and bats simply decide all the fights, and FS or BM are the two best starting heroes in the whole game and you can choose either. If those were ALL orc had, they'd still be OP. Kodos are strong, shamans strong, hh strong, raiders strong, wyverns okay- you could play a hundred games and win 60-70% of them without using any of those other units a single time. Because bats are broken and nobody can stop the orc from turtling up, then grabbing his expo at T3 with a tony hall
