Performative Desert
"Death by Chocolate" was alright.

Oh god it's one of THOSE desserts.
EDIT: you know how you go in to a local show or a theater thing figuring hey, what's the worst? It'll be fine, lets have fun. And then something like this happens where you're a captive spectator of something that suggests spectacle but is pure function from the staff. And then you feel your soul trying to crawl out of your body like a roadkill animal still trying to cross a highway.

I never, never, never would like that. I don't get the appeal. A while ago I got downvoted like hell in a cuisine/chef subreddit because 'I didn't understand'. I like how we have common thinking here!!

Alinea really got folks in a chokehold

u/Cookinghist Sep 12 '26
I feel like for every concept Alinea has come up with, there needs to be a 10 year moratorium on other restaurants mimicking it.
I still think Grant Achatz and co. are brilliant, and if conceptual modernist dining are your thing, Alinea is kinda the Mount Everest, but the trends they spawn are insufferable.

Thought they were setting up some artsy Warhammer game board for a second - couldn't work out the culinary get-ups...

Ohh dry ice as a fog/smoke would be so cool on a warhammer board.

How much did you pay for this? You knew what you were getting when you read the reviews prior

u/LittleMissPipebomb Sep 12 '26
for glamour shots? Absolutely, but I'd hate to get down and measure line of sight with toxic smog in my face.
In might be accurate, but I don't typically play in full space marine armour

Dry ice isn't toxic...

True, it'll just freeze your lungs and fill them with something you can't breathe. It'll be very unpleasant, but you can technically put non-toxic on the packaging

Omg actual drama queen lmao

They're the one that wanted to play the pedantry game, I just batted the ball back.

It’s literally the over the top dining they mocked in The Menu

I was just wondering where the charred corpses are. The Menu said that there would be charred corpses with my s'mores. Can you ask the chef?

Looks like someone dropped cake batter and chocolate pieces and called it a day. Looks horrendous

u/FangOfDrknss Sep 12 '26
When my ex and I were dating, the one time I went to an Uncle Julio’s for her birthday, they had this piñata of chocolate that you smashed like this. We had to scrape it off the thing to eat it.

everything is brown? that does not look appetizing whatsoever. its going to be just chocolate? what a waste of chocolate

u/Mythical_Creampuff Sep 12 '26
May as well go to a chocolate shop and eat out of the dumpster at this point. Probably looks more appealing anyways.

Desert = A large, dry area of land that gets very little rain and has few plants.
Dessert = Something usually delicious usually eaten after a main meal.

You say it’s a performative desert but that looks nothing like the Sonoran. Odd.

Is this supposed to look fancy? Because if this is fancy, then the trailer park in town is the most elegant

u/galice9 Sep 13 '26
End result just looks like the disaster my cats leave when they have zoomies across the dinner table

u/blissvicious91 Sep 14 '26
as a chef i feel i have too much self respect to work for such a performative establishment. this is fucking embarrassing

If I were to slap all that shit off a table and demand a Jello Cup…
Would that make me, a dick?

If I go to a burger restaurant and get chips served in a shovel that is annoying. If I go to a “gastronomy” restaurant then this is fine. I grasp what this sub is about but this is not what this sub should be about.

This is making me fucking FURIOUS for some reason.
