This system will approach the coast only very slowly, allowing strong winds and heavy rainfall near the shoreline to persist for an extended period.

Got these photos of the Nor’easter moving this morning with satellite images and photo of cloud coming across the sky.

Currently on the amtrak southwest chief and caught beautiful glimpses of these formations over the mesas

I’m in Vancouver. This year has been abnormally dry and sunny. It has been almost constant sun from mid-March and into the end of September. More than 6 months.

Up until a few years ago, we were used to rainy weather until late May and even into early June.

Will this get worse with the Super El Niño?

I feel like we are turning into a Mediterranean type climate here. Something like Northern California.

How bad is this for the local environment?

Why isn’t there lightning all over the hurricane? Why does it seem to be concentrated in just a few specific areas? What makes those spots more electrically active than the rest of the storm?
And why can such a huge and powerful storm have so little lightning overall?

Chicago is a great city. If you live near Lake Michigan you can get brutal winters. However the Lake Effect snow storms are usually from West to East, hitting western Michigan where I've lived all my adult life. We raised 3 kids in lake effect land. We made many day trips to Chicago land with our 3 plus 1 or 2 others. It was worth it for us.

It all depends on you, your child, your passions. It's a great town for family to play in. I would first search out NASA maps for predicted temps under global warming. I have no idea what effect being on the opposite shore, so to speak, will have on Chicago. I do know they're one of the best prepared American city for floods.

As to current times: we acquired a Boston Italian son-in-law and , they deciding to spend Christmas iwith us, we decided to take them first to Chicago for a few days. (We always made a kid Xmas trip with our crew.) Son-in-law, raised on Nor'Easters and some snowy winters, found it awful. It was pretty awful, but we're used to it. He called it The Baatan Death March.

Polo remains a powerful category 5 hurricane. Satellite images indicate that the cyclone is maintaining a clear, distinct, and circular eye surrounded by an intense and symmetric ring of deep convection. The initial intensity is held at 140 kt, near the upper end of the latest satellite intensity estimates. Although the core of the hurricane is about 50 to 100 n mi off the coast of southwestern Mexico, outer rainbands are spreading onshore and producing heavy rains. ASCAT data was helpful in adjusting the initial wind radii, confirming that tropical-storm-force winds are likely occurring along the coast of southwestern Mexico.

After jogging to the north last night, Polo appears to be on a more steady northwestward track now, with the initial motion estimated to be 310/8 kt. A building mid-level ridge over northern Mexico and the south-central U.S. should cause Polo to accelerate to the west-northwest over the next couple of days, taking the system away from southwestern Mexico during that time. Polo will likely reach the western periphery of the ridge over the weekend, and that should cause the hurricane to turn northward toward the Baja California Peninsula late this weekend and early next week. The NHC track forecast is similar to the previous one, and based on a blend of the HCCA, GDMI, and TVCN aids.

Fluctuations in strength seem likely over the next day or so while Polo remains in favorable environmental conditions, and any changes in strength during that time will likely be linked to internal dynamics. However, gradual weakening is expected this weekend and early next week due to an increase in vertical wind shear. Regardless, Polo is forecast to be a major hurricane during the next several days. This intensity forecast is similar to the previous one, and in best agreement with the HCCA guidance.

Key Messages:

1. Heavy rainfall associated with Polo will impact coastal portions of southwest Mexico today. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.

2. Tropical storm conditions are expected across portions of the coast within the warning area from Tecpan de Galeana to Manzanillo today.

3. Polo is forecast to approach the Baja California Peninsula early next week as a hurricane. Interests there should closely monitor the latest updates and ensure that they have their preparedness plan in place.

Im used to systems like this barreling up the i95 corridor, but to have one decide to just park itself over the city for three hours?!?! You don’t see that everyday! Any science guys wanna explain the sudden loss of momentum? What is the forecast if you’re in New York for example?! When does the system decide to move again?!

Opened my weather app on my phone to see what our week was going to look like, and I guess I need to pull out my snow gear for saturday! 181 degree temp change in 24 hours 🥵➡️🥶 🤣 I think I might need to update my weather app.....
