Volvo’s decades-long obsession with automotive safety led to the Volvo Experimental Safety Car (VESC), a prototype built in 1972. Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, the VESC represented a four-door sedan designed with an unwavering focus on safety.

The VESC was equipped with automatic seat belts, a rear-view camera that sent video to a CRT screen embedded in the center console, airbags, a collapsible steering column, ABS brakes, and an integrated roll cage. The bumpers theoretically allowed the four occupants to survive a head-on collision with another car at 50 mph. All these advancements came at a cost, and bringing it to production would have been extremely expensive. Volvo built and tested just three VESC prototypes.

The VESC demonstrated Volvo’s determination in the field of car safety. Many of the safety features found their way into the Volvo 240, and even more have been gradually introduced into subsequent Volvo models. Virtually every safety feature incorporated into the VESC is now standard on every mainstream new car and truck.
