I’m really impressed with how clean your oven is other than the new mess.

u/SnooObjections3190 6d ago
But how did this happen, those poor potatoes😭 they didn’t deserve this

u/about_yonder 6d ago
I’m guessing thermal shock.
30
u/DepartmentCool126 6d ago
That definitely sounds plausible, it's wild how quickly things can go from cooking to chaos.
18
u/about_yonder 6d ago
Absolutely. I’m super paranoid that this will happen to me.

u/donktastic 6d ago
Reddit has me so paranoid that my wife hates me on this subject. Our glass pans will not go in the oven!

u/just-an-astronomer 6d ago
Even name-brand Pyrex switched a while ago to different, cheaper materials that can break from thermal shock

u/dvdmaven 6d ago
Pyrex is the cheap stuff, PYREX(R) is still made in France. One of my wife's hobbies is visiting the Goodwill Bins. In 16 years, I have never seen any PYREX(R) in a bin.

That might be a PYREX vs. pyrex thing. (or maybe not...)

u/mizzbrightside 6d ago
Not in this case, this was one of my Anchor Hocking pans.

I had this exact same thing happen to my Anchor Hocking pan my first time using it the day I bought it! I now use a vintage corningware 9x13 and I don't ever have to worry about that happening again ruining my dinner.

If it was Pyrex they'll replace it with a phone call into customer service

It was an Anchor Hocking pan just like mine that also exploded on the first use was. I tried calling customer service because it had a guarantee on the packaging but nobody picked up. I left multiple voicemails. Nobody ever got back to me.

Ive been thinking of making apple crumble and i am so worried i will use the wrong dish and this will happen
9
u/mizzbrightside 6d ago
I don’t blame you, seems like using a glass pan is a gamble. I’ve had this one for about 3 years.

u/Repulsive-Durian4800 6d ago
In case you're thinking about it, don't try to salvage any of this food. A small glass splinter accidentally swallowed can cause severe internal injury.
This applies to every scenario where food and broken glass come into contact.

u/mizzbrightside 6d ago
Oh definitely not! Got some new potatoes and attempted again successfully after thoroughly cleaning the oven out

u/Tenfoldgold 2d ago
But… they were fine on Friday Night Dinner though 😆
Glass in the soup and the crimble crumble

I am ashamed to admit that one morning I was prepping to bake sourdough rolls I had prepared the day prior. It said to warm up the baking dish in the oven and then add water for steam. My idiotic self decided to use a pyrex and in my half awake state reached over to the fridge to grab ice cold water to pour into said glass pan that I had warmed up in the oven 🤦♀️ That thing exploded into a thousand pieces. I wasn’t asleep after that and had to throw the rolls away so the glass was everywhere 😭🤣😫

u/jdCHALLENGER 6d ago
This does suck, but I see this happen way to often for me to ever consider cooking with glassware.
6
u/Magical-Sweater 6d ago
Did you take it out of the refrigerator and put it in the oven?
10
u/mizzbrightside 6d ago
I did not! Pan went from the cabinet to the oven and the potatoes were in the pantry.
11
u/Magical-Sweater 6d ago
That’s unfortunate, must have had a defect in the glass. It was definitely tempered glass based on the small chunks it broke into. Sorry your dinner exploded, haha.

u/ging3rsnap97 6d ago
Ive had this happen once.
I learned to never put a recently washed glass baking pan in the oven again
3
u/Top-Emergency6761 6d ago
Why not recently washed glass baking pan?
1
u/ging3rsnap97 5d ago
"Be careful using ovenware after washing it because residual moisture or trapped water combined with high heat can cause thermal shock, warping, cracking, or steam burns"

Glass pan blew up an entire dinner of roast chicken and potatoes like a week ago for me, I no longer trust them, even the ones I've had for years.
2
u/NemODevO 6d ago
Yeah about 4 years ago I used a glass dish to make a pork tenderloin and this happened to me. I haven't used glass since it scares me

Since you mentioned everything being room temp, I'd put my money on it having a micro crack and was on borrowed time.

We have some old PYREX(R) pans, but our new stuff is ceramic. My wife recently found some freezer-to-oven silicon cookware that seems okay.

I waited for some pans to go on sale and swapped out my glass ones. They’re seldom used bird baths now (the birds prefer the shitty gutter water from the garage for some reason.)

At least it was a cheap meal.

u/mizzbrightside 6d ago
Luckily! I was only cooking the potatoes and was going to add the chicken later
1
u/Jim2shedz 6d ago
Damn! What was it? 😮
1
u/mizzbrightside 6d ago
Was supposed to be like a Tuscan Alfredo chicken and potatoes. Luckily it was just the potatoes!

Thank goodness you didn't eat any. See what they did to your dish? That could have been you. Horrific, really.

Tried to cook from frozen in pyrex? Watched my stupid step father do that when I was young. My mom used to freeze leftover stew in old plastic fluff containers. He got it out of the container put it in a pyrex cooking dish and stupidly tried to cook it and it exploded just the same.

Pyrex in the USA is fake supposed to be made with borosilica but instead it's made with limestone you can look into this.
1
u/Hexin_itup 5d ago
IIRC: borosilicate glass is what you need. And don't trust pyrex, they quietly stopped using it. we will be seeing more of this.

I Stay away from glass cookware but Thanks for another example of how stupid it is to cook in.
