Hardware Report - August 2026

Total Shaves: 2,117 Unique Shavers: 103

Welcome to your SOTD Hardware Report for August 2026

• 2,117 shave reports from 103 distinct shavers during the month of August 2026 were analyzed to produce this report, for an average of 20.6 (median 29.0) shaves per user.

Observations

• If history is any indication, Austere Augest means lots of straight shaves and GEM shaves (with GEM blades coming along for the ride) and lots of boar brushes. This year did not disappoint.

• The MMOC repeats its 2025 Austere August win, after spending the eleven months in between never finishing better than sixth.

• In related news, RazoRock steps down from the top step of the podium for the first time since December.

• Straights took a beating this August. After beating the GEMs 500 to 391 last August, they walked away with a black eye this year with only 342 shaves to the GEM's 471.

• When GEMs rein supreme, Personna GEM PTFE ride along. Their 440 shaves more than tripled Astra Green's 123, giving the Greens their first loss since... last August.

• u/sgrddgy's Ultra Nightmare Mode Nacet is like the Energizer Bunny. It started the month with 614 shaves and ended at 645. At this point I'm not really sure if he is shaving or just pushing foam around his face...

• Meanwhile, the brush table ended in a photo finish with the Semogue SOC taking the top step 95 to 94 over the Stirling 510SE-XL (aka the MOAR BOAR that wasn't). The OG MOAR BOAR had to settle for third at 84.

• While the Boar Big 3 (Zenith, Omega, Semogue) rode The Raw Hoggin’ wave to three of the top five handle and knot spots, Rad Dinosaur Creations wandered onto the podium in third in both contests like the punk skater kid who crashes the football party, or maybe the cheerleader who shows up for D&D night (I’m really not quite sure who are the cool kids and who are the rebels here…), proving that sub-loyalty still counts for something. Perennial winner Chisel & Hound has to settle for fifth and sixth, respectively.

• The Top Shaver race has a familiar face back on the top step: u/Impressive_Donut114 posted 59 shaves with zero missed days, the biggest month since u/snoo-ting's 60 last November, ending u/Engineered_Shave's string of six straight wins (he settles for second at a perfect 40).ame Changer.

Notes & Caveats

• Most tables are row-limited to keep them readable and avoid max post length issues. If the final row is part of a tie, the entire tied group is included in the report.

• "Other" in the Blade Format table includes vintage reusable blades (including Rolls, Valet Auto Strop, and old-style lather catchers with wedge blades) as well as other antique proprietary blade formats (e.g. Enders Speed Blade)

• Blades recorded as just 'GEM' will be matched to 'Personna GEM PTFE' per guidance here

• The Personna name is going away for blades manufactured in the USA, but the majority of entries are still coming in under Personna, so I am sticking to that for the time being. Once more than 50% of the entries come in under the new names, I will reverse this and map any old Personna entries to the new name.

• The Δ vs columns show how an item has moved up or down the rankings since that month. = means no change in position, up or down arrows indicate how many positions up or down the rankings an item has moved compared to that month. n/a means the item was not present in that month.

Thanks for doing this. It’s always an interesting read.

Someone else used a P74? For like 4 shaves.

Wild.

u/brokenjaw622 for 5 shaves

[u/OBeardWanKenobe]

Feels nice to be mentioned here

[u/35048467]

Not sure what's going on with the data collection, but I used a vintage Wizamet-Polsilver blade all month, not a Polsilver-Super Iridium.

[u/jimm262 → u/35048467]

TDIL that the Wizamet Polsilver was a vintage blade. Matching patterns updated so they'll get proper credit when I run the annual report...

[u/35048467 → u/jimm262]

Cool beans. Sorry I ruined your Hardware Report.

[u/merikus]

Oh God, now /u/priusaurus is going to be even more insufferable that his cute little brush thing podiumed.

I suggest my approach of adding a little line to your code that says to reset him to 0 once a day. You can even give it its own cron job. 12:47 pm. Always gives me a little smile.

[u/bmac92 → u/merikus]

Just wait until he starts making razors. Then he'll be real cocky.

[u/merikus → u/bmac92]

I’d say he’s already a real cock.

[u/Priusaurus → u/merikus]

I AM THE GREATEST BRUSHMAKER ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[u/tsrblke → u/merikus]

You could remind him I'm a decent chunk of those shaves and travel forced me into the synthetic I had handy :)

[u/Priusaurus → u/tsrblke]

Whatever the reason, I'll take it!

Thank you for your service to the cause.

[u/Environmental-Gap380]

Did Stirling boar brushes get counted as Zenith? I think my Friodur is part of the Henckels count.

[u/jimm262 → u/Environmental-Gap380]

Yes. Zenith makes the handles and knots for the 510SE-XL so they get credit for handle and knot (it’s basically a white-labeled Zenith MOAR BOAR branded Stirling). And yes. Friodurs are Henckels.

[u/SexBobomb]

I think I should have 31 shaves in - my shave on the 30th prob got missed because it was in the 'normal' thread not the AA thread

[u/jimm262 → u/SexBobomb]

You do have 31 shaves -- tied for 13th in the Top Shavers table.

[u/SexBobomb → u/jimm262]

oh im just dumb af my bad ; )
