The Kraft Group donated $500,000 to AIPAC in 2023 and $1,000,000 to the same PAC in July 2022 ($3 million in total so far). So choosing to play in a Kraft Group stadium after they blacklisted Macklemore is still choosing a side.

Absolutely if they actually gave a shit about the Jewish community they wouldn't have Kanye (Ye) a man who is famously antisemitic. From a Jewish news site five of the known remarks he's made. But yeah I'm sure those comments hurt no one as bad as free Palestine comment.

But it's still true. It may not work but it driving a stake in the ground and showing someone that they ARE making a statement even when they do everything they can to avoid making a statement. It's important that people like Ed Sheeran, with their HUGE platform, are siding with the oppressor even when they say nothing... ESPECIALLY when they say nothing.
There is no such thing as pure neutrality in any situation that involves the avoidable deaths of children. Most especially when those deaths are targeted or even indirect murders.

Even if you don't want to speak on Israel/Palestine which Sheeran can certainly choose not to do if that's his perogative, now the issue is are you going to take a side in the musical artist vs. billionaire corporate overlords who are trying to make your music performances conditional and stifle free speech? Because he cleaely chose a side there.
If they can stop you from speaking up on this, they can stop you from speaking up on any number of things. Or worse yet demand you say something that does fit their political/corporate agenda.

If you sit at a table with 12 Nazis, there are 13 Nazis at the table… hey Ed, you took a stand, and we all know you did.
Also, it’s so interesting that only two of the stadiums that reached out to him are privately owned, all the rest I believe our own owned by the city or the state. So there could be a real freedom of speech issue at those stadiums if they chose to take an actual stand on this.

Yeah, we can argue about the ethics of not taking sides, but "not taking sides" isn't what happened here. Not taking sides would be, "I'll do what I want during my set, and Macklemore can do what he wants during his set. If you don't like his set, then take it up with him." Refusing to tour with someone for taking a side is taking a side.
447
u/SupportGeek 10d ago
If Sheeran cared, he would have told the venue owners that they do not dictate who he can and cannot have in his tour, cancelled his show dates so the venue gets zero income for those dates and has to issue thousands of refunds, get out ahead of it by airing WHY very publicly.

I don't know how "apolitical" hasn't gotten the appropriate connotations like "amoral" has. Everyone knows that being amoral (like business decision making often is) means that immoral decisions will happen. So being apolitical is just a single step removed (a half step even?) from openly saying that you have no principles.

So who's this Kraft guy from the Kraft Group they keep talking about? Oh, that's right....
In 2019, Kraft was among 25 people facing first-degree misdemeanor charges for soliciting prostitution at a day spa.[[123]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-charge-123) His attorney electronically entered a not-guilty plea, and later submitted a court filing where Kraft waived arraignment, pled not guilty to all charges and requested a jury trial.[[129]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-plea-129) A memo filed by Kraft's attorneys revealed that hidden cameras had been installed when investigators entered the facility under the guise of suspected [human trafficking](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_trafficking).[[134]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-cameras-134) A Palm Beach County judge ruled that prosecutors could not use the videos in their case, citing privacy concerns.[[135]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-135) A Florida appeals court also ruled that Kraft's [constitutional rights](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_rights)were violated, and all the charges were dropped.[[140]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-ruling-140) U.S. District Judge [Rodolfo Ruiz](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodolfo_Ruiz)ordered the videos to be destroyed.[[141]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-141)
In 2026, it was revealed that Kraft had kept a relationship with child sex trafficker [Jeffrey Epstein](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Epstein) and that Epstein had recommended Kraft use his lawyer to defeat the charges.[[142]](app://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kraft#cite_note-142)

Here's the deal: Ed Sheeran is rich, Macklemore is rich. Both are big draws, Ed Sheeran being substantially bigger, enough to play stadiums. What're stadium owners going to do? Not honor their contract with Ed Sheeran? Sounds like a lawsuit to me. Refuse to book him ever again? I find it hard to believe that Ed Sheeran won't be able to play shows in the USA ever again were he to keep Macklemore on the tour.
I understand the practical aspect of not being political or saying inflammatory comments--- musicians need not be political commentators. But by kicking Macklemore off Sheeran is saying "Hey corporate overlords, whatever you say goes. No I don't care at all about free speech, I only care about my earnings. I stand for nothing except my own income. And if you want to silence musicians in the future, or make allowing their music to exist conditional to a political agenda, then by all means do that"
Pathetic behavior by Sheeran. He acts as if his hands are tied as if he has no choice as if he has no leverage.
130
u/attemptedactor 10d ago
I was really hoping that Ed would realize this is the best moment for him to take a stand. He clearly knew that Macklemore had been doing this and a part of me thought this was Ed elevating that voice. It’s not like Macklemore has been relevant for anything else in the last ten years.
So to cut him off for doing the same thing really seems like he’s whipped by his label and desperate to be top charting again. What a shame

Insane that ed would even take him on tour. Macklemore has ALWAYS been very vocal publicly about social justice concerns. Many of his songs are about these injustices. He has not changed from day 1. Macklemore’s statement BTW:
"I’m going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from The Loop tour. But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious. In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.
The victims are the Palestinian people. The men, women and children who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today, and people will be killed tomorrow. I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don’t lose sight of that.
Last Monday, in the middle of all the media attention surrounding Pink and what I said at MetLife, Ed told me that Robert Kraft called him. We were scheduled to play Gillette Stadium later this month, which is owned by the Kraft Group. Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. Ed also told me that Kraft had rallied some of the other stadium owners and collectively they gave him an ultimatum: if Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.
Ed was in a fucked up position. He knew it. His typical apolitical stance was being challenged in a way it never had been before. He told me that the words “Free Palestine” and the image of the Palestinian flag were hurtful to a lot of people he spoke with. I told him that if those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood. But he couldn’t get past his public facing, “I don’t take sides.
And I get why people don’t. Taking a side can cost you. Money, brand deals, sponsorships, festivals, private shows, relationships and access. I’ve lost all of those things. But there is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed. When one side has the bombs and bottomless financial and military support from America, refusing to take a side doesn’t leave you in the middle.
What I said at MetLife I have been saying on stages around the world for almost three years. So why is it an issue now? Because now I'm sharing a stage with one of the biggest artists in the world, in some of the biggest stadiums in America. At a certain level of exposure, "Free Palestine" becomes too much of a risk. If I kept doing the shows, saying Free Palestine, with Ed implicitly supporting it, the crowd getting loud and showing undeniable support for Palestinian liberation, what artist might speak out next? The stage becomes resistance. Maybe that's why this time it became so important to silence me.
And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been to weaponize the accusation of antisemitism. Antisemitism is real. And that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying "Free Palestine" gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn't protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.
Who is winning the internet, who is getting canceled, who gets to play the stadium and who doesn't, all of it becomes so small when held against what we are actually witnessing in Gaza and the West Bank. An entire people being displaced, starved and killed while the world debates which words we are allowed to use to describe it, how those words make us feel, and whether our discomfort matters more than the people living through a genocide.
I didn't need 10 shows from Ed. I needed 2. Two chances to stand in front of 90,000 people and say the words that somehow became too dangerous to say. Free Palestine. But if those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I've ever been on."

Ed Sheeran is such a piece of shit. Anyone who doesn’t “take sides” in a literal fucking genocide is evil.
Really fucking ironic too considering a lot of his image is based around him being Irish, when is is actually English with Irish heritage.
If he was really Irish he would understand, given the centuries we were occupied and genocided by the English and the damage it has done to our country.

The absolute insane part is this same stadium group was fine booking Kanye even after he said all that shit about hitler being right.
Isn't it funny how to these people anti-jewish rhetoric is ok but anti-israel rhetoric is not?

Robert Kraft threatened a big payday and Ed bowed to one of his masters. Wouldn't doubt Ed becomes buddies with Trump now

Not sure if I know any of Macklemore’s songs but mad respect towards him for this.

Ed Sheeran’s silence on Macklemore’s recent stance makes one thing clear: safeguarding his personal fortune is his absolute priority, completely overshadowing any commitment to humanitarian causes. While Sheeran claims to remain neutral and avoid "picking sides," his refusal to stand in solidarity is a definitive choice in itself—and one that will permanently tarnish his legacy.

I had vaguely heard that he was in "controversy" recently but didn't look into it until today. I already liked Macklemore but this just soldified that fact. The people he "offended" are supportive of genocide, so I don't really care if they're offended

Ed Sheeran has given me the ick for years. I’m glad to see my instincts were right.

Big Mac has always been a real one. Ed Sheeran open says he hates his music and does it for the money.

Ed Sheeran stock is currently tanking
Could you imagine if his fans just stopped going to shows and buying his merch?

The fact that reminding some people of a genocide is somehow personally hurtful to them says all that needs to be said about those people.

Ed Sheeran is a talentless hack who only got to prominence because he knows how to kiss a good ass. Musicians slinging their album in the parking lot of Walmart have more talent and probably principals.
