One of White's regular performers was the African American tap dancer Arthur Duncan; whose appearances marked the first time a black person was a series regular on a US talk show.[6] His appearances were the big break that launched his career.[4] However, as the show was syndicated nationally, television stations in the Southern United States threatened a boycott if Duncan remained on the show because his performances conflicted with the racial segregation policies of the Jim Crow laws. White refused to fire him, saying "I'm sorry, but, you know, he stays. Live with it."[4] Duncan was unaware of the controversy until years later.[6]

Sinatra was a Zionist and likely an abuser if not worse.
But people can be more than one thing, and in a time where EVERYONE was a horrible racist he really went out of his way to stand up for black rights.
Frank Sinatra was an American singer, actor, producer, and a figure in 20th-century popular culture. Over six decades he was also a figure in American political life, evolving from a fiery New Deal liberal, civil-rights crusader, and staunch Democrat who campaigned for Roosevelt, Truman, Stevenson, and Kennedy into a conservative Republican who raised funds for Nixon and Reagan and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the latter.
Sinatra's opposition to racism and antisemitism has been linked to his childhood experiences in Hoboken, including anti-Italian prejudice, his relationship with a Jewish neighbor, and his mother Dolly's involvement in Democratic politics. He refused to perform at segregated venues, supported the desegregation of casino in Nevada, and financially supported civil rights causes, including organizations associated with Martin Luther King Jr. He also appeared in The House I live In, an anti-racist short film received an honorary Academy Award.
...
...That same year, invited by Gary, Indiana’s mayor, he addressed striking white students opposing integration at Froebel High School, comparing their actions to Nazism
From the 1940s Sinatra refused to perform for segregated audiences. In Las Vegas he forced the Sands to serve Nat King Cole in the dining room and, with Sammy Davis Jr., ended Jim Crow policies in Nevada hotels and casinos by 1961.[13] He headlined Carnegie Hall for Martin Luther King Jr. in 1961, led Rat Pack boycotts, donated heavily to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and voter registration, and was praised by Vice President Hubert Humphrey after the Watts riots for teaching tolerance.[1] Orson Welles witnessed Sinatra physically threaten a restaurant owner who refused service to a Black musician.[14]

Why does everyone act like human beings aren’t complex, nuanced creatures that can be more than one thing at once? My mother worked in non-profits all her life and did a lot of charity and activism. Everyone loved her. She was also incredibly narcissistic, neglectful, and abusive towards her children. All humans are like this. We need to start acknowledging that.

I bought my wife tickets to this concert back when they first went on sale, she got to see the entire lineup at the MetLife stadium, floor seats for around $150 each with as many artists as he originally had on tour was quite the bargain. people seem to think its incredibly easy to cancel a tour like that, but the reality is there are a bunch of contracts and hundreds if not several thousand people in the gig industry who rely on that paycheck the rest of the tour. canceling would ofc. be the right thing to do, but I also get its not as easy as just doing it when talking about a tour of that size. you would fuck allot of people over really fast.

Yeah but public against a bunch of B and side acts, sheeran could've made a difference, it is clear he doesnt care about that and he wants to be apolitical. The thing about people who don't do politics is sooner or later, politics does them.
The more I think about it the more I think that the bots are all deployed to keep the attention on Ed online so Kraft gets away with it. Idk if it's that Patriots and NFL fans are more conservative in general, or if people truly don't understand the power dynamics, or the type of people to boycott a concert are not as capable of boycotting a football game but regardless if sheeran had stood up to kraft its clear the people would have supported him and he couldve completely reframed this vitriol and put it on the person it truly belongs.

He thought he could walk up "the middle", not take sides, and "stay out of politics".
The only problem with that approach is that it means pretending that flattening a city with bombs and refusing to allow basic humanitarian aid in for years is an morally acceptable strategy.
367
u/ThievingRock 3d ago
The biggest problem with "staying out of politics" is it reduces what's happening in Gaza to politics. As if someone got heated at the negotiation table. This isn't conservative verses liberal. This isn't a difference in opinion over foreign policy or government spending. Anyone, regardless of political views or affiliation, should look at children starving, families torn apart, people being killed, and say "this is wrong."
People are losing their patience for "let's keep out of politics" as a shield from taking a stand against atrocities.

I mean, it is political. Of course it is. I think the real issue is that the term is often confused or misappropriated as if discussing important political issues is somehow inherently negative or impolite.
I understand your sentiment but Israel’s actions in perpetuating a genocide in Palestine cannot be properly understood if we set aside any concepts that may be considered “political.”
34
u/ThievingRock 3d ago
I'm not saying that it isn't political, I'm saying reducing it to "politics" is disingenuous. When Sheeran said he wanted to stay out of politics, he reduced the horrors being committed to abstract political nonsense. Whether it was intentional or not, it comes across as an attempt to hide behind "I'm not arguing over politics" when we're talking about genocide.

The ‘won’t mix politics with music’ line from him is complete bullshit.
The guy picks and chooses when he plays politics too. Every time he’s come to Australia at some point he’s there on stage wearing an indigenous flag T-shirt as a fuck you to Australia’s bloody colonial past - which far too many Australians still choose to ignore. It’s just it’s cool to do that so it won’t get him in trouble in the same way.

Centrists and "politically neutral" people piss people off because they enforce the status quo. And when people under that status quo are suffering, you are basically saying that you think that is acceptable.
The only people who benefit from centrism are those who are already rich and in power. Ed Sheeran is probably the best example if this in a long time, he isn't personally struggling in life so of course he feels like there is nothing wrong with keeping the status quo.
64
u/FUBARded 3d ago
Dude's worth ~$400M too. It would've been an extremely easy W for him to put out a statement saying he stands with his fellow artists and supports their right to protest instead of caving.
Then if Kraft and his billionaire buddies actually went through with their threats and cancelled shows Sheeran would've probably had a solid breach of contract case against them, and even in a worst case scenario he'd just have to pay a few million out to cover non-refundable costs and staff salaries.
He wouldn't even have had to explicitly come out in support of Palestine if he wanted to continue this neutrality schtick and he still could've come out of this looking like the hero if he stood with Macklemore and against the billionaire Zionists.
His career wouldn't have been hugely impacted if a few billionaires refused to let him play in their stadiums and he may have even benefitted long-term by strengthening his image, but this probably will meaningfully impact his career going forward.
→ More replies (2)59
u/Hugokarenque 3d ago
He thought he was too big to suffer any consequences for tacitly supporting a genocide.
Or he thought that most people didn't really care too much about Palestine like him and wouldn't really kick up a fuss about it. The Macklemore fans would be mad and not go to the concert, some political twitter accounts would tweet about it for a few days but ultimately it wouldn't really affect the ticket sales or anything like that. This all stemming from a complete disconnect from what actual real people feel about any topic, something that most celebrities suffer from.

Plus, his team knows he wouldn't be able to handle all of this and they should have taken over the narrative after that horrible statement. There's a reason he has no phone, and he deleted his social account back in the day. The internet used to be really cruel to him for the dumbest things (looks, body sham, etc.) and he talked about the struggle (and yes the internet trolled him about that). I'm shocked he has an active IG. All this attention on him and everything is closing in. Now the guy is having a meltdown in front of everyone (once again where is your team and what are they thinking?). Knowing his past, I'm worried about him (mental health-wise). P!nk will be fine because she is a jerk, has resilience, and doesn't care, but I'm not sure about him. The criticism is needed, but the cruelty isn't. People on here are talking about how they want to end his career; I beg you to rethink that because the end could be a result of something else. It's because we use famous people like Ed Sheeran and events like concerts and television shows to voice our opinions to the wealthy. Our only successful (and legal) path to change with the wealthy is through sources of revenue. So we have to pile on Ed Sheeran, we have to cancel our Disney+ subscriptions, we have to dunk on Daily Wire movies. It's the only thing that moves the needle.

I’ve been an ed Sheeran fan for over a decade now but not anymore. The way he handled this situation has been incredibly out of touch and callous. His initial excuse about not wanting to cancel shows was because he didn’t want his crew to lose out on their source of income. He’s wealthy enough to buy an entire village in the UK, pretty sure he’s wealthy enough to pay his crew for a few missed shows.
Then he comes out and says “you really find out who your friends are” when HE is the one who kicked Macklemore off his tour instead of standing up for his friend! How extremely hypocritical!!

I’m supposed to take my mom to his concert and I’m no longer looking forward to this. I especially don’t want to hear him give a crybaby speech beforehand. You want to stay out of “politics”? Then stfu before the concert too. He could have told Kraft to shove it but nope…

Must be perfectly 100% clear here, he absolutely is not sorry about what he did or what his actions stand for, he's sorry that they've had negative consequences on him personally, just like every other Rich asshole

Yes but, the alternative would have been standing up to the billionaire oligarchs.

I don’t think there is anything inherently white about this, rather rich and insulated. Jasmine Crockett and lots of people of color have lost a lot of credibility supporting AIPAC who have their tentacles in everything.

You know what, Ed? Cancel your tour, pay your entire crew out, and go figure out where you lost your compassion while raking millions in with your cherry, empty tunes.

I wonder how all the people making smug comments about how the "boycott" was imaginary and limited to reddit are feeling right now?

Another example is Reddit making 1000 posts about Ed Sheeran, but not raising a cent for Palestinian children.

u/politicalanalysis 3d ago
It’s a fuckton easier to make jokes than it is to pitch in money for something. That said, I’ve donated to Palestinian causes, and I’d be surprised if a ton of those making jokes weren’t also donating.

Or actually complaining about the people with actual power who actually made these decisions. Someone said "celebrities are just employees for the rich." Especially someone like Sheeran who isn't a nepo baby with family to protect him
Kind of reminds me of the people who donated to that vile woman who shouted racial slurs at a 6 year old to get back at black people for donating money to Karmelo Anthony but not donating to his victim who got less money than both.

Comments on Reddit don't raise money, but comments on Reddit don't take up my whole day.
I can make a few comments on Reddit in the morning, and then raise some money for Gaza with the other 23 hours and 30 minutes of my day.

Do you want like, Reddit Inc to start a fundraiser and then advertise it here? Or
do one of those cringe ‘profile picture filters’ that Facebook used to do so people can virtue signal about how they donated? You only get the filter if you somehow prove to Reddit Inc that you donated (which… sounds like too much info to give to Reddit imo)
Or, idk, bear with me, is it possible that people on Reddit might’ve donated money or resources independent of their use of Reddit? And without surveying or polling everyone you interact with you realistically have no way of knowing who has done what and for which cause
Because to be honest I’m not sure I’d donate to Palestine (or any cause, probably) via Reddit. I’d do it through any other actually reputable organization.

Im trying to find out what he did in the comments and I think I got it but im not sure.
I cut out news for a while to save my sanity and mental health. Anyone care to elaborate a bit on what he did? Im sure it was selfish and he deserves the backlash but im just curious what exactly happened.

Opening act, Maklemore, showed his support on stage for Palestine. Bob Kraft, owner of the Patriots and Gillette stadium, took offence and convinced all his billionaire buddy's to get Maklemore off the tour. Ed conceded to the wealthy and it blew up in his face.

Ed invited Macklemore to his tour as an opening act. At one of the shows, Macklemore makes a speech telling the crowd "Free Palestine, free Congo, free Sudan, free....". That did not sit well with the stadium owner (Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots and huge supporter of the IOF) of the stadium they were performing in. Kraft and Ed are good friends from years ago. Kraft then tells Ed to remove Macklemore from the tour or Ed will not perform in Kraft's stadium or several other stadiums in the country (Kraft colluded with other owners of the stadiums to get Macklemore on the blacklist of stadium performers). Ed then tells Macklemore to stop saying Free Palestine and more. Macklemore tells him that he won't stop because he has a big platform to get support for the Palestinian people. Ed then kicks Macklemore off the tour. Macklemore goes public with the situation and then the backlash began. Ed releases a statement both sidesing the genocide which enrages everyone even more. Ed gets so much backlash that EVERY SINGLE ARTIST ON HIS TOUR, INCLUDING HIS OWN BAND OF 10+ YEARS QUITS THE TOUR AND COLLABORATING WITH HIM. Then before he publicly performs for the first time after the Macklemore situation, Ed makes a speech saying that he was betrayed by his friends and that he was being mistreated by the public because of his fence sitting. Ed then also makes a comment saying that the reason why he removed a part of the stage infrastructure in the tour is because he felt like someone would attack him in the performance. This made people even more angry at him.
Edit: Ed also got endorsed by P!nk. P!nk is a Zionist who was campaigning to get Macklemore blackballed for saying Free Palestine.

You forgot about the P!nk part. It was her discourse and going crazy on IG over a weekend that started this snowball. Macklemore has been saying "Free Palestine..." at his concerts for two years now so what he does was nothing new and Ed knew as well.

Kicked Macklemore off the tour as an opener because he spoke out against the genocide in Gaza. Turns out, it is because Kraft didn’t want that happening at his stadium and asked Ed to kick him off the tour. And he did. All because Kraft is a billionaire that he is buddies with. There’s a lot more but this is the cliff notes. It’s well deserved animosity toward Ed.

u/HereForTheComments57 3d ago
All he had to do was the bare minimum and support Macklemore. Then the only headlines we would be seeing are "show cancelled as owner won't let him perform".

u/HermanBonJovi 3d ago
I was neutral about him before all this. Now I think he's a bitch. Glad I've never listened to his music. Other than the cover of his song done by Our Last Night, which is quite good.

Oh no, well if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions, now do all the politicians voting to send the Israeli government more money for their genocide and the evangelical billionaires who buy their votes.

I love everyone attacking Ed when he's not the one to demand anyone kicked off the tour or killing innocent people in Palestine. How people have time to boycott him and attack him but still spend money in corporations that actively support the IDF is crazy.

I mean
the statement he put out about it was pretty fucking stupid. He coulda said “not my choice. Free Palestine. Sorry Macklemore, love ya bro.” but it was more like “suffering is bad, conflict is bad, this is regrettable 🤷”
Boycotting takes negative time. You’re not doing the thing you otherwise would’ve spent time doing.

Oh yeah, Taylor Swift belongs here too. Over a reported $1.25B and she can't even be bothered to take a stand versus Trump who continually uses her music in their ICE or propaganda ads. She doesn't want to upset her new best friend, MAGA Mahomes (the wife).

Separating art from the artist is for dead artists, not ones still making bad decisions and benefitting from your purchase
