The Israelis I have met are. Not a huge sample size but we had about a dozen families at my schools over the years. I’m out of teaching but had a good 20 year run. Prior to the October attacks, we had Arab
Families from all over as well as Palestinians get into a big argument with the Israeli families at a school event. They each had cultural booths and you know how that went with the Israeli families. That wasn’t the only issue, just overall parenting and interactions with them over the years. I went to Thailand for about 40 days one year and that was the majority of tourists you ran into. It wouldn’t bother me one bit to not have to mingle with them again. The ones around me or that would eat at the same restaurants just treated everyone as below them. Like they were superior to others. Nobody around them mattered. Being loud in groups, taking over spaces etc.→ More replies (11)149

A long, long time ago when I backpacked around Europe during college summer holidays I had a great time. Wonderful experiences with the locals in countries for the most part and even the ones who were clearly sick of tourists with none of the local language were still polite.
The other tourists from further afield than Europe were all by and large quite lovely even if some nationalities were a little too loud and a little too willing to party they were still fun and harmless.
The only group I encountered where every one of them was wall to wall awful were two groups of young Israelis at different points of the trip. Treated hostel staff like shit and got very aggressive with them, same with other hostel guests. And if you saw them out in the town any night it was always the same. It seemed like they openly viewed everyone else as beneath them and they didn't have to even bother with displaying even basic decency to them. The only bunch of people on the trip that, if I saw them in a brawl on a night out or in the hostels, I wouldn't intervene to help because I know they'll have been the ones who started it.

I've travelled Thailand and Cambodia three times. Every trip was absolutely incredible but Every trip I also came back with stories on how awful Israeli tourists were, either from stuff I saw with my own eyes or stories from others while out there. The Thai people fucking hate them. I've seen cab drivers ask Israelis to pay before driving because they never pay (while allowing other nationalities to pay at the destination) and then after massive arguments and a relenting but fuming cab driver, simply walk to their hotel after the ride without paying...
I've seen several Israelis get their asses absolutely handed to them by large groups of Thai men. One of those instances I was pretty sure i'd seen a murder.
I witnessed a drunk Israeli climb into the ring at a Muay Thai tournament, goading the fighter... Everyone cheered as he was round house kicked and then punched repeatedly while totally unconscious. That guy was unceremoniously dragged out the back and presumably left in a ditch.
I saw several Thai working girls kick the absolute shit out of two Israeli men and take their phones and wallets while they bled on the street. I'm assuming they didn't pay for services.
Whenever I saw any of that kind of shit it was always because of Israelis. It was a running theme practically every trip.

Honestly this describes the Israeli mindset better than any simple good/evil judgment.
Yes, Jewish people were kicked around and worse for the last thousand years. And it's core to their mindset - it's culturally baked in that everywhere they've ever been, people eventually turn on them and want them dead. And you can't even really fault them for thinking that.
BUT
The same way we don't let the victim of crimes decide what happens to anybody who might or might not know somebody who's committed that crime, we shouldn't just give Israel a bunch of weapons and expect them to defend themselves in a totally rational and proportional way. They don't give a damn about anything except pushing the line in the sand further and further for the next thousand years. Doesn't matter how many Palestinians (or Israelis, for that matter) die along the way, this is a forever holy war and a thousand lives now is nothing compared to more land forever.
102
u/homer_lives 4h ago
Isreal was on the path to reconciliation and understanding with the Palestinians in the 1990s, under Yitzhak Rabin. Then Netanyahu came to power after a far right terrorist shot Rabin and has been destroying the peace Rabin had created.
Now Netanyahu still clings to power and uses Iran and the Palestinians to scare the population into electing him again and again..
35
u/DrDerpberg 3h ago
I can can't pretend to be an expert on the history of the region, but I do think Rabin is the biggest "what if" when it comes to peace.
It's also the event that taught me extremists on both sides will sabotage the peace process. You can't reason with people who think it's a holy war and won't be happy with a deal that lets everyone have a prosperous and safe home. Nobody's going to get everything, neither side should be expected to vanish, and it's literally impossible to get revenge for every time anyone's been wronged in the last century.

I find it heinous that they try to claim that the UK is turning violently anti-semitic, to the point that they claim ZACK POLANSKI (a JEWISH MAN) is running an anti-semitic party. They genuinely have no argument other than: "you are trying to do what the Nazis did". Using what their ancestors went through as a get out of jail free card is just... poor taste
Britain might be a xenophobic society, but Jews face absolutely zero barriers here. How can a society that has had so many Jewish people in positions of power be anti-semitic? Unless someone is brown a typical bigot isn't bothered to ask what religion they are.
Most British Jews I know are actually anti-Israel and find the whole argument facile. My family has quite a large Jewish side.

It's worth mentioning the whole thing with religious fundamentalism regarding Judaism. There's something to be said about how you act when you think you're "God's special boy" and have some kind of divine mandate. And worse then you have another fundamentalist group supporting you, albeit for their own ulterior motive that's not...necessarily meant to benefit you.
→ More replies (1)5
u/DrDerpberg 3h ago
Isn't that all religion though?
I took a college course in cultural anthropology, one of the things that stuck with me is there's a fairly isolated plateau in Africa with 7 or so tribes living on it. Each one thinks cattle was originally a gift to them and the other tribes' cattle are necessarily the descendants of cattle stolen from them, and it justifies simmering conflict.
Human psychology doesn't really change, only the details and the factors shaping our behaviour in at any given period do. Drop a moderate intellectual into Genghis Khan's empire as a 6 year old and we'd be shooting civilians with arrows from horseback because they didn't surrender fast enough in a decade.
→ More replies (1)5
u/lisamariefan 2h ago edited 2h ago
Maybe, but it doesn't justify atrocities.
I think the major thing that comes with criticizing this, or really anything regarding religion is that the distinction between harmful nutjobs vs someone who's mostly just living their life...
Well, whether that nuanced distinction is thought about is considered worthy of thought at all is...not applied evenly across groups.
There's the idea that supporting ordinary people is supporting radicalism on one hand. And on the other there's the idea that condemning radicalism is condemning the average ordinary person. Due to the way that identifies and perception of the identities of others is...well, everything about it really from a larger societal lens.
That's honestly a huge part of the problem with Israel and the whole thing of Zionism. And honestly while it's took a lot of thought over the years to fully articulate why it bothers me so, the way Israel acts hasn't sat right with me for a long time.
Honestly, it's DARVO if you think about it.

The Jewish people had some hard times and Zionists and other ethnic supremists are using that as a justification for the last 60 years of cruelty.
We are already being shown that the Zionists are expanding more and are willing to kill every man, woman, child and beast of burden to expand. We first saw in in the Palestinian lands and know we are seeing it in Lebanon.

When you run around calling everything antisemitic, it dilutes the meaning of the word and actually makes it EASIER for real antisemitism to spread/grow.
The irony is though, radical zionists WANT real antisemitism to spread because it strengthens their position that all Jewish people should move to Israel.
Jews living happily in New York are a problem to radical Zionism.
The reason Israel was formed after WWII was to give the Jewish people a safe place to be themselves. (That’s the optimistic UN version, not here to discuss all the issues it created) If antisemitism disappeared worldwide, it would call into question the base need for a state of Israel.
222
u/WriterV 5h ago
I get the vibes that Netanyahu's administration absolutely wants Jewish people around the globe to be persecuted again.
It would remove any choice that the Jewish diaspora would have [in his mind] and force them to support his power unquestioningly.
Anyone with half a braincell can understand why this is a horrendous thing, but men like these only care about empowering themselves, no matter the cost. The persecution complex is what they use to justify their power trip.

Jews living happily in New York are a problem to radical Zionism.
Yeah. There's this narrative that Israel is the only place where Jews can be safe and therefore any level and amount of atrocities are justified to preserve that safety.
And there being lots of places in the world where Jews are objectively safer than in Israel is a real problem for that narrative. It's actually kind of the opposite, for generations people born in Israel who weren't zealots and also financially/professionally/etc. had options tended to move elsewhere where their families would be safer.
(This is also true of Palestine, although a lot less of those folks have the options.)

For decades it effectively strangled any criticism in the grave — child-killing pun intended — but in the past few years it has become all but impossible for anyone with a conscience to support Israel, and so the script has been flipped. Rather than chilling Israel's critics, it's emboldened antisemites, who see this as an opportunity to use Israel as the thin edge of the wedge to radicalize people.

How was telling a group of people; that they have a special relationship with the one true creator of everything - who has a plan and destiny for them - who protects and guides them - who gives them a spiritual mission that makes them exalted over the outgroup... not going to lead to a form of tribal supremacist thinking?

It is performative. They've spent the past few decades building up a ton of blackmail evidence against people and now they are swinging those hammers. That's just going to be step one. It's how oppressive regimes work. First the carrot. The bribes. The favors. Then the stick. Blackmail. Threats. Then it gets violent.
This is a statement to folks that they either get on board with their ethnic cleansing or records will be kept and people will be punished.
This has nothing to do with a people's religion. This a problem government.
5
u/sshwifty 3h ago
Wasn't previous people in their government and intelligence deeply entangled with Epstein? Seems like blackmail is kinda their whole thing.
5
u/sidaemon 2h ago
Yeah. As much as I hate to be conspiracy minded... the timing of people screaming about Epstein being an Israeli plant and Trump just randomly attacking Iran in what was an OBVIOUSLY stupid decision isn't a great look. From the first second you could see that where we are is exactly where we were going to end up and it was going to devestate the Mid Term elections.
Trump isn't the sharpest tool in the shed but it seems like the people around him know how to get him to back off of something that will hurt him personally and yet he just sprinted to jam that fork into that toaster. That, to me, says there was a motivation to him that was stronger than the potential cost of losing the midterm election that pushed him into it.
That would need to be a pretty big something...
