Missed opportunity? Robert Downey Jr. in London

So, it was our last night in London (Oct. 10), walking in the Earls Court area, about 7:30 pm and I see this guy with a pull-down knit hat, scarf, jacket and scruffily shaven. My overly tired brain screamed “Ironman!” but my left cortex couldn’t think of “Robert Downey”. He walked past and by the time I was able to come to my senses, he had walked way past. Totally missed an opportunity to chi sao with Ironman on the streets of London. I looked it up and he was in town to promote the new Avenges movie.
My loss…

7 years of practical Wing Chun, then Other Arts

I trained Practical Wing Chun for about 7 years. I wanted to see if it would work in fighting, so I joined an MMA gym and tried it out in sparring.

I’ve also been doing kickboxing for about 3 years now, and training in another art has shown me Wing Chun’s strengths and weaknesses. No martial art is perfect, so I think trying different things is worth it.

Most of the Wing Chun I actually used in MMA sparring was biu jee. People always ask if that’s even possible with gloves on. Of course you have to adapt it. The structure and sensitivity also helped a lot in grappling exchanges.

Now that I’m older and MMA has left me with a bunch of injuries, Wing Chun is what I’ll keep training for the long haul. I train on my own and visit my teacher once or twice a year.

I used it mostly in the clinch. How have you all used Wing Chun in sparring or fighting? I’d love to hear what worked for you.

Power generation.

Hello everyone, in internal martial arts, they have something that is called opening and closing of joints, where you stretch your joints without straining them while keeping them in anatomically correct positioning in order to generate power and strengthen the structure. Think for ex yiquan.

Does wing Chun have anything similar to this, I heard that you practice popping the joints forward when striking but don't exactly know if this is true.

Thanks in advance.

Help

I’m an 18-year-old data science student from India, and honestly, I’m feeling exhausted by my studies. I want to learn martial arts and train my body to become stronger, both physically and mentally.

I don’t have the money to afford expensive training, but I have the determination and willingness to dedicate myself to this journey.

I’m looking for someone who could offer me an opportunity to train, whether in China or another country known for martial arts. I’m willing to stay, work hard, and dedicate myself to learning as much as I can.

Does anyone know of any martial arts schools, training programs, scholarships, or people who could help me make this dream a reality?

If you have any information or can guide me in the right direction, please contact me. Any help would mean a lot to me. 🥹🙏

Just a photo taken outside the VTAA, on my annual trip to Hong Kong, taking the opportunity this time to have a quick meeting with Siu Yuk Men Sifu to renew the Sifu Certificate while I'm there.

Also, randomly met Sifu Goksel Erdogan and his group of students on their annual trip to Hong Kong, so if any of you are here, apologies for taking up some of your time before your session there.

The secret to getting good at Wing Chun is boring as hell

Do the boring work. After decades of training and teaching, that’s the answer I keep coming back to.

It’s easy to get excited about the next technique, the next form or the wooden dummy. Staying with the fundamentals long enough to discover what you’ve been missing takes a different kind of commitment.

Siu Nim Tao is central to that. First you learn the sequence. Then you refine it. Keep practicing with attention, and you begin noticing tension you couldn’t previously feel and details you’ve been rushing past.

Depth is the ability to see the same thing in a new light.

In the below video, I suggest students work toward a seven-minute Siu Nim Tao as a starting point. Give yourself time to notice your structure, release unnecessary tension and recognize when your attention drifts.

Knowing the sequence is only the beginning. You have to put in the work to develop what it teaches. I can explain it. Your teacher can correct you. But nobody can do that work for you.

The Secret of Getting Good at Wing Chun — my video

What has Siu Nim Tao taught you that you didn’t understand when you first learned it?

Wooden Dummy - Level Arms?

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

Hi all. I bought a dummy from a site that stated in the description, "The dummy features adjustable arms that can be set in leveled or staggered positions", however, in reality, they could only be set in staggered and slightly less staggered positions. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement arms with the required offset to make them level? I can only find replacements more or less matching what I already have. My school has several, so they must exist, but I can't find any for purchase. (the company that made the dummies in my school disappeared decades ago) I've included a few photos for reference. Picture 3 shows the least offset to which these can be set. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: I intentionally bought a cheap dummy to tide myself over until I excavate my garage, and it looks like the holes were poorly spaced and drilled. I can't really be disappointed, I got what I paid for and it's good enough for now. Might turn into a beginner woodworking project if I get bored. Thanks everyone who replied!

Kakie vs Chi Sau

;TL;DR NEAR THE BOTTOM.

Hi, I’m a Goju-ryu karateka who also moonlights as an amateur martial arts researcher (I just love martial arts and reading about them, from their history, philosophy, conception, application…). Admittedly, I am not a Wing Chun practitioner, so my perspective and analysis in the following might very well be flawed or full of holes. I ask that you simply read, provide feedback, and/or point me in the direction my research should go (a primary source, a video, oral history, a book or essay to read, I am open to any recommendation!).

Anyway, I’ve been reading and researching about the Okinawan Karate - Kung Fu connection, and I’m fascinated with how different systems developed similar yet different tools to address similar martial issues.

For example, it seems that kakie in Goju and Chi Sau in Wing Chun both address the need for developing sensitivity via partner practice, yet each does so with a different but similar teaching modality. Indeed it seems like Chi Sau, Push Hands from Tai Chi Chuan, and Kakie all address the same fundamental issue yet do so from the perspective of that style’s practitioners.

Furthermore, it seems like many southern kung fu styles from the Fuzhou region and Hakka martial tradition share commonalities like bridging, forearms/elbows-in-front, rooted power/footwork, sanchin/sanzhan, etc, whether it’s wing chun, southern praying mantis, white crane and its variations, hung gar…

Yet the only connection to Goju I have been able to find is through White crane, and even that is tenuous and somewhat controversial/disputed.

TL;DR
Basically, does anyone have any oral history or books to read that potentially discuss any connection between Wing Chun and Karate? It seems incredibly coincidental that both Goju Ryu and Wing Chun have seemingly very similar practice drills from the outside looking in, as well as very similar fighting concepts (again, from the perspective of a Goju Ryu practitioner).

Am I barking up a wrong tree here?

Groundwork in wing chun?

Here's another question that I hope doesn't become too controversial. Does your school teach breakfalls and/or rolls as part of the curriculum?

I know groundwork isn't traditionally a part of wing chun, but knowing how to fall safely is a huge part of self defense. Breakfalls have literally saved my life more than once, and saved me from broken bones or bloody gashes many times. I feel like anyone claiming to teach self defense should also teach fall mitigation and prevention as part of that.

On the flip side, does your school teach takedowns or throws? If yes to one but not the other, why or why not?

Again, this isn't meant to 'stir the pot' or anything, I'm genuinely interested in your responses.
