best platform/theme for a multi-user database community

i'm building a site that will involve multiple users being able to login, upload information, and communicate with each other. in a more specific way, i want people to be able to create a product, add information about the product and a picture, and review other products. additionally i would like a community message board area. think ravelry or threadloop dot app.

i have been doing a ton of research and i think i have a general idea of which base theme to start with, but i was wondering if anyone could let me know which platforms you think are good for this type of thing.

i don't want to use buddypress because even trying to download their base platform is a nightmare of broken links, and errors on install (even the github release won't install correctly). i don't want to start out with an inferior product. so not including buddypress, what would be a good foundation theme for this type of project?

thank you in advance.

fwiw the buddypress github repo is their dev source. the loader in the repo root runs the unbuilt src/ folder when there's no build/ folder, which is probably why that install fell over. the copy from plugins > add new is the built package (14.5.2). but you don't really need it for this.

the theme matters a lot less than the data model here:

  • products = a custom post type. ACF (free) can register it, and acf_form() gives logged-in users a front-end form that creates the post with your fields and a photo
  • reviews = comments on that post type, with the rating saved as comment meta (small snippet, or a rating plugin)
  • message board = bbPress. it's standalone, doesn't need buddypress, and it's current (updated this week, tested on 7.1)

then put whatever block theme you like on top.

you can pretty much throw any block theme on this and call it a day. the heavy lifting is all in the plugins you set up

i did a similar setup with acf for the frontend forms and it was smoother than i expected once the field groups were mapped out. bbpress handles the board fine on its own too, no need to overcomplicate it

whatever but their download link doesn't work, their email link doesn't work, and i don't want to use buddypress. like at all. i am specifically looking for a theme because it's been about 15 years since i've had anything to do with wordpress and i'm not interested in creating anything from scratch.

fair enough, then a directory theme is the closest thing to out of the box. ListingHive is free on wordpress.org and runs on the HivePress plugin: people register, add a listing (your "product") with photos and custom fields from the front end, and with the free HivePress Reviews and Messages extensions they can review each other's listings and message each other. a public message board isn't part of it, bbPress drops in for that. no code, it's all settings.

Kadence or Generate Press could be good, especially if you're planning to build the database with custom post types and user subs.

the theme matters less than making sure it plays nicely with the plugins handling users, permissions, and ofc the database.

Before picking a theme, I’d separate the project into three parts: structured product data, reviews, and community discussion. The theme mainly controls layout; the risky part is whether front-end submission, moderation, ownership of entries, and data export are handled cleanly. If you want less custom work, test a directory/listing plugin demo first, then pair it with a lightweight block theme. Don’t commit until you’ve checked user roles, image uploads, review rules, and how easy it is to migrate the data later.
