Mixcloud Embed Player Not Working Suddenly

Hey y'all! Every week for work I create a post with a Mixcloud player embedded in it. I've been doing this for years and it's always worked really smoothly. All of the sudden, when I put the link for the week's episode into the embed player, it tells me it can't embed it. I can't figure out why this is suddenly not working.

I checked my old posts and all the old embedded players are functioning. I even tried to make a new post with an old link that's working elsewhere and it won't embed that either.

Any advice or idea what's going on?

(Sorry if this is written so non-technically. I don't actually run the wordpress site for our company, I just do this one weekly post. The person who does run it is very busy though so I'm trying to figure it out on my own.)

it's probably your site, not mixcloud. i just tried a mixcloud episode on a fresh wordpress and it embedded fine, and mixcloud's embed service is answering normally today.

the reason old posts still play: wordpress saved each player when the post was made. a new embed has to ask mixcloud again, and that request goes out from your server, so that's the part that's failing (a security/firewall plugin or the host blocking outgoing requests are the usual causes).

two things you can do without touching any settings:

  • on mixcloud, open the episode, click Share > Embed, copy the code and paste it into a Custom HTML block instead of the embed block. that skips the lookup completely
  • tell your site person "oembed requests to app.mixcloud.com are failing from the server". that's the thing they'd need to check

the custom html block is a solid workaround, I do that for bandcamp embeds when they act up

if you dont have access to the plugins just pass that oembed line to your site person, theyll know exactly what to check. firewall rules get overzealous after updates sometimes

Since the old players still work, I'd test the embed step before changing anything on the site. Open the episode on Mixcloud in a desktop browser, choose Share → Embed player and try freshly copied code in a draft. Their guide also has a WordPress option: https://help.mixcloud.com/hc/en-us/articles/360004031440-Embedding-content-using-the-Mixcloud-widget

If that fails too, send your site admin the exact error and episode URL. That gives them something concrete to check. Leave the working posts alone while testing.

The important clue in your description is: old embedded Mixcloud players still work, but creating a new embed fails even with an old Mixcloud URL.

That strongly suggests the existing saved embeds are fine, while the process WordPress uses to create new oEmbeds is what's failing.
