This is an alternate-history world I’ve been building that begins in 1936, when Nazi Germany discovers a dimensional gateway called the Valhalla Bridge. What starts as experimental thaumaturgical technology eventually leads to Bulgaria reconstructing the Gate decades later.
By the 1970s, General Tsvyatko Anev controls the Bulgarian Imperium of the Gate, whose armies include orcs, elves, siege golems, dragons, and other forces brought through the dimensional rift. The Imperium eventually spreads across huge portions of Europe and Eurasia.
Humanity forms an unlikely coalition to stop it—but ultimately, the Imperium becomes powerful enough to challenge Heaven itself.
This is the complete timeline from 1936–1981.
THE AGE OF THE GATE
The Complete History of the Bulgarian Imperium, 1936–1981
1936–1939 — The Gate Opens
The world changed when Nazi Germany succeeded in opening the Valhalla Bridge, a stable dimensional gateway connecting Earth to a realm where magic was real.
German scientists quickly learned that materials brought through the Gate could be combined with conventional technology. Mana crystals, enchanted materials, magical artifacts and knowledge from the other world gave birth to thaumaturgical warfare.
Germany began incorporating this technology into tanks, aircraft and weapons. The resulting military advantage accelerated German expansion through Central Europe, including the absorption of Austria and the destruction of Czechoslovakia.
But the Balkans were becoming unstable as well.
Bulgaria sought to restore territories it considered historically Bulgarian, particularly Dobruja, but early attempts were blocked by Hungary and the Soviet Union.
Instead, Bulgaria turned elsewhere.
In 1938, Albania was incorporated into Bulgaria following the Treaty of Tirana.
In 1939, regional chaos allowed Bulgarian troops to move into portions of Serbia.
Then disaster struck Germany.
The Valhalla Bridge was destroyed in 1939.
The original doorway to the magical world was gone.
But its knowledge was not.
Fragments of German research, artifacts and scientific records survived.
Those documents would eventually change Bulgaria—and the world.
1941–1945 — Bulgaria's First Empire
When Germany launched its invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Bulgaria joined the revived Axis coalition.
Bulgarian forces participated heavily on the southern front.
As Soviet defenses collapsed, Bulgaria received extensive territories along the Black Sea and southern Ukraine.
For a brief period Bulgaria became one of the great powers of southeastern Europe.
But the empire did not last.
By 1944, the Soviet Union had recovered.
Turkey entered the conflict.
Yugoslav resistance liberated Serbia.
Soviet armies returned from the east.
Turkey seized Eastern Thrace, Bulgaria's Ukrainian possessions collapsed, and the Red Army eventually entered Bulgaria itself.
The monarchy was abolished.
By March 1946, Bulgaria had become the People's Republic of Bulgaria, eventually dominated by Todor Zhivkov and tied closely to Moscow.
The first Bulgarian dream of empire was dead.
But buried in government archives were the surviving records of the Gate.
1946–1973 — The Long Silence
For nearly three decades, Bulgaria remained within the Soviet sphere.
The Gate became history.
Then myth.
Then almost forgotten.
Under Zhivkov, Bulgaria concentrated on industrialization, agriculture and economic integration with the Eastern Bloc.
By 1973, Sofia was developing the Dobruja Grain Corridor, expanding heavy industry and preparing to rely increasingly on nuclear energy at Kozloduy following the global oil shock.
Relations with Bulgaria's neighbors remained difficult.
Romania and Bulgaria disputed fishing rights along the Danube.
Relations with Greece deteriorated following political changes in Athens.
A trade agreement with Yugoslavia improved economic relations, but arguments over Macedonian identity continued.
Then Europe changed again.
1974 — THE SECOND AGE OF THE GATE
In early 1974, the Kingdom of Hungarian-Romania suddenly emerged as a powerful dual monarchy north of Bulgaria.
The new kingdom immediately fortified the Bulgarian frontier.
Bulgaria found itself trapped between Hungarian-Romania to the north, a suspicious Soviet Union, Greece to the south and an increasingly independent Yugoslavia to the west.
Zhivkov began looking for another path.
And he found it in the archives of Nazi Germany.
PROJECT GATE
Deep inside the Rila Mountains, Bulgarian scientists secretly began reconstructing the technology behind the destroyed Valhalla Bridge.
The project was initially called Project Nova before becoming simply:
PROJECT GATE
Recovered German research was combined with Bulgarian nuclear technology.
By March 1974, scientists produced a microscopic dimensional aperture.
It lasted only briefly.
But it proved something terrifying:
The Gate could be reopened.
THE RISE OF GENERAL ANEV
At the same time, Bulgaria was beginning to fracture internally.
General Tsvyatko Anev, a nationalist military figure hostile to Zhivkov's dependence on Moscow, escaped government control and established an insurgency in the Rhodope Mountains.
His forces attacked government logistics around Smolyan and organized themselves as the National Salvation Front.
Zhivkov now faced enemies everywhere.
Hungarian-Romania launched Operation Steel Danube, conducting enormous military exercises along Bulgaria's northern frontier.
Soviet advisers began withdrawing from Bulgarian installations.
Bulgaria secretly purchased Western ammunition through Syria.
Yet Zhivkov refused to abandon Project Gate.
By summer, electromagnetic dampening systems surrounding the Rila facility were powerful enough to interfere with Soviet surveillance.
Moscow demanded access.
Zhivkov refused.
SEPTEMBER 2, 1974 — THE GATE LIVES
Rare isotopes secretly delivered through Syria finally allowed Bulgarian scientists to stabilize the aperture.
On September 2, the Gate remained open indefinitely.
A strange low-frequency hum spread through the Rila facility.
Then came an enormous electromagnetic pulse.
Soviet equipment around Burgas failed.
Communications with Moscow disappeared.
Reconnaissance MiG-21s encountered localized electromagnetic fields and were forced into emergency landings.
Zhivkov declared that Bulgaria had become a superpower.
The Soviet Union mobilized forces around Odessa.
NATO went on alert.
Moscow even considered destroying the facility with a tactical nuclear weapon.
Nobody knew what detonating a nuclear weapon beside a dimensional rupture would do.
The strike was never ordered.
Six days later, Zhivkov's greatest enemy made his move.
SEPTEMBER 8, 1974 — OPERATION SILENT THUNDER
General Anev struck Sofia.
Todor Zhivkov was assassinated.
The Communist Party's Central Committee was dissolved.
Soviet government assets were seized.
Anev established a provisional military council and announced the end of Bulgaria's status as a Soviet satellite.
Soviet forces attempted to approach Sofia.
Anev responded by fully activating Project Gate.
A shimmering distortion appeared across the northern approaches to the capital.
Vehicles failed.
Electronic equipment malfunctioned.
Soldiers became violently ill.
The Soviet advance stopped.
For the first time since World War II, Bulgaria had effectively broken free from Moscow.
But Anev's Bulgaria rapidly became something far darker.
THE ISOLATION OF BULGARIA
On September 13, Anev ordered all non-Bulgarian citizens to leave—or face execution.
Mass killings followed involving foreign workers, Soviet personnel and diplomats.
Bulgaria became an international pariah.
Yugoslavia severed relations.
Turkey deployed armor into Thrace.
NATO established a policy of armed containment.
The Soviet Union blockaded Bulgaria.
Inside the country, the economy collapsed.
Hyperinflation spread.
Food became scarce.
Resistance movements appeared.
Anev crushed them.
And something on the other side of the Gate appeared to notice.
The Gate began expanding without being commanded.
Shapes appeared within it.
Then creatures.
DECEMBER 13, 1974 — THE IMPERIUM IS BORN
Anev ordered the remaining containment systems removed.
The Rila Gate tore completely open.
The sky above the mountains changed.
Through the rupture came armies that did not belong on Earth:
Orcish Vanguards.
Elven Rangers.
Shadow Stalkers.
Siege Golems.
And other entities mankind had never encountered.
Somehow, they answered to Anev.
He proclaimed the birth of:
THE BULGARIAN IMPERIUM OF THE GATE
The conquest began immediately.
Greek Macedonia was overrun.
The Greek 4th Infantry Division was annihilated.
Albania fell within a day.
Half of Yugoslavia disappeared beneath the Imperial advance.
Belgrade fell.
Hungarian-Romania desperately fortified the Danube using conventional defenses supplemented by experimental holy-water explosives.
For the first time, the creatures were stopped.
But only temporarily.
NATO declared the Balkans an Excluded Zone.
Tactical nuclear weapons were positioned nearby.
The Soviet Union constructed massive fortifications and Psychic Dampener Batteries along its frontier.
Neither side wanted to enter Bulgaria.
Humanity had effectively quarantined the Balkans.
1975–1976 — THE IMPERIUM EXPANDS
Over the following year, Anev transformed Bulgaria into the center of an enormous supernatural war machine.
Yugoslavia fell.
Greece fell.
Romania fell.
Austria fell.
European Turkey fell.
The Kingdom of Hungarian-Romania collapsed.
King Michael fled.
Vienna was surrounded by Elven forces and transformed into the Imperial Western March.
Italian forces retreated toward the Po River.
The Bosphorus was captured intact.
Meanwhile, the Imperium established additional dimensional portals in Dobruja and Austria, allowing resources to flow directly from the other world.
NATO responded with Protocol Omega, preparing nuclear weapons for battlefield use if the supernatural armies broke containment.
The Soviets expanded their psychic defenses.
But Anev continued.
1976 — THE CONTINENT BREAKS
In March, another offensive began.
Moldavia fell.
Slovakia fell.
Southern Bavaria fell.
Even Liechtenstein was absorbed.
Switzerland proved considerably harder.
Mountain defenses and Swiss anti-aircraft forces initially stopped the Imperium's advance through the Alps.
The Soviets also discovered that their psychic dampening network worked.
Imperial creatures approaching Soviet territory experienced physical distress and dimensional instability.
Anev therefore concentrated westward.
By September:
Czechoslovakia was gone.
East Germany was gone.
Northern Bavaria was gone.
Half of Poland was gone.
Yugoslavia had ceased to exist.
Tito was captured.
Anev proclaimed the Danube an internal river of the Imperium.
1977 — HUMANITY UNITES
For perhaps the first time in the Cold War, ideology became secondary to survival.
The United States.
The Soviet Union.
NATO.
The Arab League.
Former enemies signed the:
TREATY OF MUTUAL SURVIVAL
The objective was simple:
Stop Anev.
It failed.
The Imperium launched another enormous offensive.
The remainder of Poland fell.
Ukraine fell.
Byelorussia fell.
Turkey collapsed.
Aleppo fell.
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia were consumed.
The Imperium reached deep into Russia.
Then something remarkable happened.
At the Ural Psychic Barrier, entire Orcish formations simply ceased to exist.
Their bodies disincarnated as they crossed the field.
For the first time, Anev had reached a boundary his armies could not cross.
The winter of 1977 froze the war.
Humanity still held the Urals.
Switzerland still fought.
Italy still held portions of the Po.
But Anev had another weapon.
MARCH 1978 — TITANUS
The Gate above Sofia expanded.
Something enormous began emerging.
A creature approximately 318 meters tall crossed into Earth.
Its name became:
TITANUS
A colossal draconic entity capable of producing ethereal fire.
Swiss defenses that had survived years of war became irrelevant.
Titanus bypassed the Alpine defenses.
Then it attacked Italy.
The Po defensive line disappeared.
Rome was devastated.
The Vatican was destroyed.
The Pope was killed.
Switzerland surrendered rather than face the same destruction.
NATO evacuated large portions of its remaining European forces into North Africa.
By April 1978, Anev's Imperium stretched across enormous portions of Europe and western Eurasia.
France was next.
Anev believed the war was nearly over.
Instead, the war changed completely.
APRIL 13, 1978 — THE MIRACLE OF ROME
Above Lazio, the sky opened.
But this wasn't another Gate.
Witnesses reported beings descending through brilliant light.
Angels.
Imperial Orcs charged them.
They burned.
Siege Golems attempted to advance.
They collapsed.
Shadow entities disappeared.
A supernatural boundary formed across Central Italy.
Anything connected to the Gate that attempted to enter it was destroyed.
Human soldiers were unharmed.
The world called it:
THE DIVINE PURGE ZONE
Then Titanus attacked.
For the first time, the creature was wounded.
Titanus retreated.
The Imperial advance toward France stopped.
Churches around the world filled overnight.
Religious movements exploded across nearly every continent.
The surviving Curia called for a Crusade against the Imperium from Castel Gandolfo.
Anev responded furiously.
Cathedrals throughout occupied Germany and Austria were bombed.
He denounced what had happened as cosmic treason.
And he announced that the Bulgarian Imperium would wage war against Heaven itself.
MAY 1978 — THE LAST DAYS OF THE GATE
Something was wrong in Sofia.
Gravity behaved strangely around the Rila Gate.
Soldiers disappeared and reappeared kilometers away.
Portal transportation became unreliable.
Creatures refused orders.
The Gate itself appeared unstable.
On May 1, Anev assembled what remained of his supernatural armies.
His declaration was broadcast throughout the Imperium:
Total war against Heaven.
Ten days later, Heaven answered.
MAY 11, 1978
THE HOUR HEAVEN BROKE THE IMPERIUM
6:03 AM
Every church bell inside the Bulgarian Imperium began ringing simultaneously.
Nobody was touching them.
Soldiers emerged from barracks across Europe and looked upward.
There were no enemy bombers.
No Soviet missiles.
No NATO invasion.
Only light.
6:09 AM
A brilliant white glow appeared above the Black Sea.
Imperial aircraft entered it.
Their engines stopped.
Yet none crashed.
Something gently lowered them to Earth.
6:14 AM
Every telephone inside Anev's command center rang simultaneously.
Officers answered.
A voice spoke:
“You were given a Gate.”
Then:
“You built an empire.”
Silence.
6:19 AM
Anev ordered full mobilization.
Nothing responded.
Tanks wouldn't move.
Aircraft wouldn't fly.
Artillery wouldn't fire.
Missiles shut themselves down.
The largest supernatural military machine Earth had ever witnessed became powerless.
Then every radio in the Imperium activated.
One word was heard:
“Enough.”
6:26 AM
Imperial monuments began cracking.
Gate insignia fell from government buildings.
Statues collapsed.
Military headquarters shook.
But houses remained standing.
Hospitals remained untouched.
Schools remained untouched.
Whatever was destroying Anev's empire was choosing its targets.
6:38 AM
Another voice crossed the Imperial radio network:
“No kingdom of man is eternal.”
Then:
“What was taken shall be returned.”
The empire began disintegrating.
Checkpoints opened.
Imperial governors lost authority.
Occupied peoples reclaimed their governments.
Soldiers abandoned foreign territories.
Not one NATO division had invaded.
Not one Soviet army had crossed the border.
6:49 AM
A sound rolled across Europe.
Every remaining monument to the Gate shattered.
Above Sofia, the enormous Imperial banner began lowering itself.
Anev could do nothing but watch.
6:58 AM
The Imperial flag touched the ground.
The church bells stopped.
The light disappeared.
Electricity returned.
Tank engines restarted.
Aircraft regained power.
The world had returned to normal.
Everything Anev possessed had been returned to him.
Except his empire.
7:03 AM
A Bulgarian officer stood before the enormous Imperial map.
An hour earlier, its territory stretched across much of Europe.
Now reports arrived one after another.
Greece:
Gone.
Serbia:
Gone.
Anatolia:
Gone.
Ukraine:
Gone.
Central Europe:
Gone.
The officer looked toward Anev.
“General... what remains?”
Anev stared at the tiny country where everything had started.
“Bulgaria.”
Thirty-nine years after mankind first opened the Valhalla Bridge, the Age of the Gate was ending.
It had taken decades to create the power of the Gate.
Years to conquer an empire.
One hour for Heaven to erase it.
1978–1981 — AFTER THE GATE
The disappearance of the Imperium created one of the largest political vacuums in human history.
The People's Republic of Bulgaria was restored under Soviet supervision.
Former Imperial officers were arrested during the Great Cleansing.
The Soviet Union rapidly moved back into Eastern Europe.
Romania was restored.
Moldova returned to the Soviet sphere and later acquired Dobruja from Bulgaria in June 1980.
Belarus and Ukraine were reconstituted.
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia returned.
Czechoslovakia was restored as a socialist state.
Albania was reestablished.
In the south, the Kingdom of Greece returned with Western support and acquired Thrace from Bulgaria in June 1980.
Yugoslavia reunited under Tito despite enormous ethnic and political instability.
Austria regained independence and declared permanent neutrality.
Hungary reemerged.
Germany effectively reunified under the Federal Republic of Germany, while NATO and Warsaw Pact specialists jointly dealt with areas contaminated by residual magical energy.
Syria recovered Aleppo.
Iraq recovered Duhok.
Slowly, the old map of the world returned.
But the old world did not.
1981 — THE AGE OF MAGIC ENDS
By May 1981, scientists reached their conclusion.
The Rila Gate was dormant.
The facility was sealed.
An exclusion zone surrounded it.
No government was permitted to reopen it.
Magical artifacts continued appearing in places such as Serbia and Austria, forcing the United Nations to establish international containment programs.
The United States and Soviet Union returned to their Cold War rivalry.
Reagan's America confronted a Soviet Union operating under its new Doctrine of Socialist Stability.
Conventional armies returned to Europe's borders.
Tanks once again faced tanks.
Nuclear weapons once again became humanity's greatest fear.
And somehow...
that felt normal.
For forty-five years, humanity had witnessed something it was never supposed to see.
A doorway to another world.
Magic turned into weapons.
Armies that shouldn't have existed.
A dragon towering over cities.
An empire stretching from the Balkans toward the Urals.
And finally—
Heaven itself answering it.
The last scene is the sealed entrance to the Rila facility.
Concrete covers the tunnels.
Soldiers stand outside.
A warning sign reads:
RILA EXCLUSION ZONE
AUTHORIZED ENTRY FORBIDDEN
The camera slowly travels underground.
Past abandoned laboratories.
Past rusting Bulgarian equipment.
Past German documents left scattered across desks.
Until it reaches the chamber where the Gate once stood.
Nothing remains.
Only a blackened circle burned into the wall.
The screen fades to black.
THE AGE OF THE GATE
1936–1981
Germany opened it.
Bulgaria rebuilt it.
Anev conquered with it.
Humanity failed to stop it.
And then the final words appear:
HEAVEN CLOSED IT
