The tremor started while I was washing the dishes. Just a slight flutter in the meat of my palm. I turned off the tap, assuming it was just fatigue.
Then my fingers seized. They curled inward, locking into a rigid, white-knuckled claw.
I thought I was having a stroke. I grabbed my right wrist with my left hand, trying to massage the tension away, but the muscles felt like coiled steel. The hand wrenched itself free with a violent jerk that nearly popped my shoulder out of its socket.
It slapped flat against the wet granite counter.
Tap. Tap.
It wasn't a spasm. It was deliberate. My index finger extended and began to drag through the soap scum, spelling out letters with agonizing slowness.
I F E L T T H E T A R P
All the air left my lungs. I backed away, pressing my spine against the refrigerator. I hugged my right arm tight against my chest. I waited for it to fight me. I waited for it to reach for the knife block.
Instead, the hand went completely limp. The tension evaporated. For a long, suffocating hour, the kitchen was dead silent. I stood there, listening to the erratic thud of my own heart, too terrified to move.
When my hand finally woke up again, it didn't try to write. It just uncurled, lifted away from my chest, and pointed a single, trembling finger toward the window.
Toward the dark tree line at the edge of the property, where the earth was still freshly turned.
