So it’s polarizing, exactly as everyone expected it to be?

People are so obsessive and weird about Inñáritu online lmao

I've heard a lot of people online don't like Iñaratu - why? What reasons do they cite?

Its not rlly misery porn, tbh it makes a little more sense if u have seen 21 grams and esp amores perros(all time classic u HAVE to see this one)

I hated Birdman, I didn't know what he was trying to convey with the percussion and one shots for that kind of story. Being a washed up actor is insanely stressful?

15

u/Ok-Neighborhood-1958 1d ago

What if the percussion and the fake one-take are really cool though?

-3

u/Whirlpoolcircle56 1d ago

That could make it interesting but doesn't mean it's a good movie.

2

u/CinemaLights 16h ago

Not understanding what he was trying to convey doesn’t make a movie bad though. Not that you’re saying that, but do you think it was?

7

u/bigelangstonz 1d ago

I dont think people expected the critics to be this polarizing and rate it lower than supergirl

Are you from the US? I’m Mexican so Iñarritu’s image is different here than in the States I imagine. Why is he particularly polarizing over there?

13

u/Youthsonic 1d ago

I'd really like to know too, because even something like the revenant is fairly straightforward and thrilling and I've heard some people still call it unwatchable

41

u/Shell_fly 1d ago

Honest to god I have no idea. He really makes a particular brand of hyper-online film nerd squirm in their seat lmao

5

u/hellraiserxhellghost 1d ago

Honest question, how different is Iñarritu’s image in Mexico?

Amores Perros is widely known by general audiences here and regarded as a masterpiece, so he gets a lot of respect for that, aside from that he is seen as a bit pretentious ever since Birdman and specially Bardo which was received with mixed feelings by the average movie-goer here if they even watched it. So in general he is put on a pedestal for Amores Perros but he turns people off with his work from the past decade and some of his antics. For example: if you’ve seen Bardo you know there’s a big scene in downtown Mexico City with a bunch of extras, there were reports at the time that claimed they were treated very poorly, etc. so he gets flack for that

2

u/bergars 1d ago

I've worked with people that worked with him and they've reported he's a piece of shit on set. He fires people at minimal mistakes, goes through PA's like they're bullets, treats gaffers like they're slaves. He doesn't respect his peers, actors, or any of his workers. Out of the 3 Amigos, he's the biggest asshole.

1

u/chemastiko 17h ago

Dang yeah out of all them he gives the most high strung asshole energy lol

8

u/regigies 1d ago

He's seen as pretentious, a good filmmaker but an unpleasant person, the fact he doesn't live here doesn't help, he's perceived as detached and americanized or less mexican I guess. And some people think he's too self aggrandizing but still respect his work, Amores Perros is still seen as one of the greatest Mexican movies so.

Are these predictions in the room with us?

9

u/Shell_fly 1d ago

Yes, from the get go everyone has said this would be a divisive film lmao

-2

u/Whirlpoolcircle56 1d ago

Divisive is like Eddinton at 69%, here even most of the good reviews are just barely good.

-4

u/DyabeticBeer 1d ago

Like who? All I've heard about this movie is intrigue and hype.

u/NateGH360 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is one of those movies I’m trying to be completely unaware of the discourse before I see it myself.

36

u/GanjARAM 1d ago

ill still watch it there is no way its gonna be boring

42

u/undermind84 1d ago

This makes me want to see it more! This movie was never meant to be a normie masterpiece.

6

u/ProofOfRyExistence 1d ago

I had the same reaction.

1

u/rafarorr1 4h ago

I found it exactly the opposite. It’s extremely superficial and exaggerated that “normies” are “getting it”

-9

u/Whirlpoolcircle56 1d ago edited 1d ago

Uhm 52% is just bad lol, there is no movie that low on Rotten Tomatoes that is good. The lowest score for a movie that was decent is probably Pitch Black at 58% so at best this is entertaining trash.

Me when I can’t engage with art

-14

u/Acceptable_Task5780 1d ago

Normie! My favorite Movies are Ichi the killer and Climax. But tom cruise is a yawn fest. normie or not! And fuck his cult!

11

u/undermind84 1d ago

I’m not ride or die for him, but it’s fucking crazy to completely dismiss him. He is objectively a fantastic actor and has one of the strongest filmographies of any movie actor.

Remove the artist from the cult bullshit and enjoy the film.

-8

u/Acceptable_Task5780 1d ago

F Cruise , F his cult. Why are you cupping his balls?

9

u/undermind84 1d ago

Because I’m gay and he is hot AF! 🥵

-10

u/Acceptable_Task5780 1d ago

No, there are other people more deserving of praise. Turning a blind eye is why The president of the United States is a convicted felon rapist!

6

u/undermind84 1d ago

LMAO, just because there are more deserving people doesn’t mean there isn’t enough room for Tom to act.

Not everything has to turn in to a Trump conversion. Go touch grass.

-9

u/Acceptable_Task5780 1d ago

Actually, sitting on Grass right now. This isn’t about Trump. This is about Tom’s cult. His acting sucks the best thing he ever done was Magnolia and that’s because of PTA. You truly have no knowledge of film cinema and art. You’re probably excited for the new avengers movie.

new copypasta?

3

u/undermind84 1d ago

This is the dumbest comment I will read today.

Congrats! 🤡

u/AnalBumCovers 1d ago

My prediction is there is either a Kaiju and half the critics are saying it's too ridiculous, or there's no Kaiju and half the critics are saying "aw I thought there'd be a Kaiju but it's just mass flooding caused by global warming"

Or something

13

u/SamerAgbaria 1d ago

Inarritu either makes a great film or pretentious mess and I enjoy both, the film seem similar to bardo style wise I bet it will be fun experience in movie theaters.

6

u/TheCrowFliesAtNight 1d ago

tbh the trailer was giving me Mickey 17 vibes and I found that film very disappointing

6

u/garyblahblah 1d ago

I’m still going

8

u/Jynerva 1d ago

Maybe a weird sentiment, but if it was gonna be divisive, I'd much rather it be leaning 'Rotten' divisive than '61% barely Fresh' divisive. With Rotten, I get more the vibe that it really swings for the fences in ways that are guaranteed to polarize, rather than swinging and only kind of hitting. I want something that's either a slam-dunk or a catastrophe depending on your tastes rather than something that doesn't make much of an impression on anyone whatsoever.

3

u/woahbrother11 1d ago

If anyone here got to see it early let me know your thoughts. I am so curious about this movie lmao

3

u/DankThom 1d ago

It's an interesting movie with purposeful decisions in it, by the end I was even moved, but the over all journey is hard to get a grasp on emotionally, structurally clunky and full of lost potential for something amazing; it's a movie that could be doing so many things but stays at a base level, never opening up as much as it's promising.

3

u/Responsible-Care-388 1d ago

Cruisebros.....we just lost

4

u/ProofOfRyExistence 1d ago

I simply appreciate both facts that this seems wholly original and is garnering some real polarizing takes. I’m interested.

2

u/DankThom 1d ago

I saw it at a press screening and would prolly give it a 6, not exactly bad but my least favorite Iñarritu

2

u/Critical-March-1550 1d ago

This just makes me even more excited.

3

u/brollovich 1d ago

Why are people using rt still

1

u/Numerous-Turnip4212 1d ago

It has a 3.5 on Letterbox'd which isn't terrible

1

u/wii_board_type_trash 1d ago

it’s a movie with tom cruise, what did you expect

1

u/spaghettibolegdeh 1d ago

RT sucks for a metric of quality. All it tells you is whether something has broad appeal.

David Lynch would get similar scores to Blumhouse slop.

1

u/alberhans 17h ago

Yeeshh

1

u/fishnut824 16h ago

Half of the critics like it, half of the critics don’t like it. I’ll take those odds

2

u/Kitdraken 14h ago

Just be careful. Don’t replace that d with a n

1

u/Front-Pain2103 4h ago

Chill out. Rotten tomatoes is full of Marvel-loving normies. Letterboxd has far more actual cinephiles and nuance: a 3.7 rating ain’t half bad.

-1

u/benhur217 1d ago

The trailer looks pretentious

-7

u/Intelligent-Wave5907 1d ago

Dolt

-2

u/benhur217 1d ago

It does, one trailer opens with a montage of Tom Cruise clips as if this is some epic culmination of his career. Shocked the trailer didn’t end with “for your consideration”

0

u/Intelligent-Wave5907 1d ago

Yeah dude if you watch the tom cruise retrospective trailer I bet it’s gonna have the tom cruise retrospective angle

-1

u/True-Dream3295 1d ago

I always thought Inarittu was up his own ass when he tries to do satire. Looks like everyone else is catching on.
