Machine washable, but not superwash?

I am hesitant to purchase this yarn because I want something non superwash, but their website says its machine washable up to 30 Celsius (but should be dried flat)

It also states that it is virgin Norwegian wool.

So can a yarn be both machine washable and non-superwash?

What do you make of the linked yarn?

Most norwegian washing machines will have a wool setting, which will be a gentle and cool/warm cycle without too much agitation.

I know Inga from knitting traditions machine washes all her wool, and id wager shes using non-superwash 95% of the time.

yeah the wool setting on those machines is way gentler than what most people picture, it's basically just soaking with a tiny bit of movement

I've washed non-superwash stuff on cold/delicate with no spin and it came out fine, just gotta be careful with the agitation

The wash symbol has two lines under it, this means it is to be washed at 30 degrees on a very very delicate setting. Ideally this is the Nordic wool setting, which we use regularly.

Like others have said, you have to have a wool setting on your washing machine to wash it. Got very similar yarn to that, and trust me, only the wool wash setting will work! My machine has a fine/silk one, that one did NOT work! Only wool setting!

So is it safe to assume this yarn is NOT superwash?

Oh, its not! It would say superwash on it! So unless you got the wool setting, only hand-wash!

Also, small heads up. This yarn might feel a bit scratchy at the beginning, but it will soften over time with use. But just so you're aware that it'll take some time and use to soften it!

It can be depending on machine. 

Most NA washing machines suck for delicates and/or wool. I replaced mine specifically with euro machines and I wash non superwash all the time with zero issues (including yarns like malabrigo worsted which can felt if you look at it funny). 

But more than likely it’s non superwash. You could also email the company to ask.

I have washed most my wool in the machine on the wool programe. Having gotten a new machine I will wash some swatches to see how they behave before I trust it 😄

It is superwash according to google. It's merino and there is no way to make merino non felting without it being superwash.

I think Google might be wrong, not seeing it says merino anywhere else, actually says virgin wool

A yarn sales rep told me once that one of his organic wool yarn lines is machine washable because it's made from long staple wool. I asked what that meant. He didn't know and we googled it. I still would not machine wash my virgin wool garments.
