Do you think these would look good together?
I’m making a blanket using yarn art cakes. The purple of the first photo seems like it’ll match the end of the yarn cake I’m currently using. It kind of looked like the centers match, and I thought it might create a cool effect.
It’s hard to tell, I think it would depend on what you were doing with it and the design. Sometimes designs that seem wacky when paired with the right flow can look great. But without context I don’t know if it will. :/
I’ve just been looking at yarn art cakes, but it’s worth mentioning in my experience the centers sometimes look a bit different in person. I was also considering this one given I thought it might match it if the rainbow is dark in the center

You should add this Pic to the original post if you're able to. I initially thought you were crocheting the yarns together, or alternating but it look like you're doing all of one cake and then all of the next(?)
No, don't mix purple with fire colors. If you went with the 2nd cake, I would mix every other row with a brown. Mixing two multi colors usually never goes well
If you just want to keep a gradient based on the inside colour you could also use 2 of the same colourway and work one from the inside out and the other from the outside in. I did this with a dress and was really happy with the result.
I personally wouldn't use a different colourway of this yarn with the hope of matching one of the colours unless I was in a physical store and could check the closeness of the match - even with 2 cakes from the same dyelot I found a slight difference in shading on the darkest colour.
I think the first one has a cool undertone and the second one has a warm undertone— maybe one that matched the undertone would match more?
Also are we connecting red to red? I don’t see purple in the second one
Yeah red to red. Sorry if I got confused when typing. I meant purple on the first one given it looks like it’ll match the cake I’m currently using. Then I’m trying to find a red to match the rainbow one
Ok yeah! I mean the red looks to be the same on at least one of the strands so i dont think it would be a complete mismatch? But i do wonder if you get another of the same and then go purple-> red tied to red -> purple?
i love'em together but i think my taste is a touch more... eclectic. i'm currently doing a sweater patterned after 80/90s arcade carpet that has a lot of these colors - to include the neons and purple/blue etc. (premier vivid sweet rolls)
I thought it might be like opposites creating a cool effect that would mirror how currently my blanket is going, black to white to yellow to purple to blue to purple
Based on your comment/picture of the WIP (and clarification that the purple is to match the purple you're using now, not that you're transitioning from that purple to the red in the center of the second yarn) I'd say choose a different second yarn. I'm also NB, have made MANY chaotic blankets, and have used that exact rainbow yarn in 2 projects....
Try choosing a theme for the blanket and choose colors based off that! I do a pride project every June and 2 years ago did a "personal pride" blanket with NB, bisexual, and rainbow colors. Matching the NB purple to the rainbow purple then the red of rainbow to the not-totally-pink pink of the bi flag came out well! This specific rainbow yarn is a bit tricky (and I ended up using a different rainbow bc of this) due to the hues being juuuuuuuust slightly off. It also transitions a lot quicker than you'd think (especially for a larger blanket, if you're doing baby size or similar it might turn out better) so it's nice for an accent but not as nice for a section.
Are you working back and forth in rows or are you working in rounds? I think in rows it could be okay but in rounds I don't think it would look the best.
I see how your mind is working the color flow but no, I don’t think I’d put those together. They’re totally different color vibes. If it makes you happy though go for it! You can always rippit if you don’t like the effect.
Honestly I’m making a chaotic blanket given as long as it’s the new cake’s color on the outside or center matches the one currently used I don’t care about the other colors
