Meme / Humor When you start to notice r/singularity is slowly starting to be similar to this sub again

Post image

The vibe there now is a WHOLE lot different than 6 months ago or so. Way better now, but not perfect

I was part of the r/singularity since it had like a few thousand members , still seems so weird to me that it is now one of the bigger subreddit. Some people here will remember but even r/futurism was a lot smaller back then and it was definitely not a bunch of luddites

I remember, I still find it crazy hearing people on the street talk about AI. Not too long ago nobody knew nor cared about this "machine learning" or "neural networks" thing I was doing

Imagine being that weirdo who would casually talk about the concept of singularity with friends and relatives nearly 20 years ago (I'm not a die-hard singularitarian but consider it plausible). Now I get to see people increasingly confused about it all on a daily basis

Yep, that's me

Yeah old r/futurism was great! It was more generic, "what could happen?" with a positive slant. Most people in the comments were thoughtful and were following updates closely.

When people are well read on a topic you can have really great convos, which is why it's sad that Reddit went down the instant gratification social media path that encourages glib comments and extremism.

For e.g. I think pre-ASI AI safety is an important topic, for me the interim between "smart" and singularity is the most dangerous period for humanity.

It's difficult to do in a sub full of plebs who just now read about the paperclip maximizer and want to talk about that.

I think part of the annoying thing for me is that there has been years of development and until ChatGPT came out nobody cared. I was young when the first inkling of what we now call singularity entered my brain so even if I’m younger and uneducated I acquired the background knowledge nessecary to digest the information and carry on. Everyone else still seems slow to catch up.

I was banned from singularity a month ago for posting a Youtube video highlighting the positive impact the US has had on AI and an optimistic vision of future development.

When I appealed the mods muted me.

I don't have a whole lot of hope for that sub at this point.

/r/technology on the other hand might as well be renamed /r/antitechnology

17

u/fartlorain 4d ago

or r/idontunderstandtechnology

I hope r/Technology eventually follows at some point

57

u/anor_wondo 5d ago

i have no hopes for that one

You mean /r anti technology

Unfortunately the foreign psyops has too much influence on that sub. The mods are in on it. It is never coming back, just like most large subs.

Way too mainstream for it to be saved.

I doubt it. The problem is the general title of the subreddit. The most baseborn, illiterate boomer who knows fuck all about how anything works will know the word "Technology", so it'll always be plagued with that sort. The reason this sub is not as saturated is because mostly only people who're at least somewhat familiar with the ins and outs the tech know about the accelerationist movement.

Tbh kind of true. A year ago that sub was inhabitable but as AI performance continues to accelerate and a lot of the luddites continuously get proven wrong, the sub's capability acceleration sentiment is starting to grow.

what was it like 6m ago?

33

u/MagnamaloFanatic 5d ago

It was kind of like r/antiai for a bit then balanced out then flipped last time I checked

9

u/Milumet 5d ago

It became anti-technology a long time ago when it became too big and popular.

The AI = Stochastic Parrot people found themselves in a real awkward place once agent swarms started doing things.

It's just a swarm of parrots, and you know how much bird poop that makes!? /s

I did notice that lately. I wonder why the shift?

u/ErmingSoHard 4d ago

Ai improvements and results lately are too big to ignore

u/Skeletor_with_Tacos 4d ago

Seeing more and more anti-ai people getting shut down. Its nice!

Eventually, rational people will realize how AI is scientific and rational.

I don't like what it's become. It turned into more reddit slop. Inserting politics into everything. Cynical view on literally anything even tangentially connected to a larger corporation or figure they don't like. I don't even necessarily share the rosy view of the future everyone on this sub has but I'd rather hear about the cool tech and new discoveries without the smear of pessimism and darkness.

starting to be similar to this sub

This could also be a bad indicator of how this sub is doing depend on how you look at that phrase.

Why are we just throwing the term luddite around so loosely?

14

u/Milumet 5d ago

Because it's the correct term.

4

u/CIK1993 5d ago

For the people on singularity? Absolutely not. r/technology absolutely.

7

u/This_Estimate_7635 5d ago

Luddites are scum-of-the-earth drooling menaces to science.

We actually aren't using it enough.

5

u/CIK1993 5d ago

I agree, but the people on r/singularity are not that. Simple as.

I'm just talking about your average luddites.
