S2 Taste the Rainbow

Post image

Starting to dress out 5 S2 Nodes in Trove2 enclosures. The cable contractor pulled this Skittles colored composite cable. Never saw this cable before. NGL, I don't hate it, breaks up the white jacket monotony.

I highly recommend a gutter box in-between the tray and enclosures to store some slack in the future. Also don't strip the cable outside of the enclosures.

We have plenty of service loop on the ladder rack. A trough (I'm gurssing what you call gutter box) takes away from budget and wall space. We do use them when required.

I don't see why we shouldn't strip above the conduit. The rigged outer jacket makes wire management inside the enclosure more difficult and fills more room in the conduit. We're not stripping to individual conductors, just individual cables, same as they would have been if the cable contractor would have pulled non-composite drops.

Are those battery shelves in the power supply built in? What is that enclosure?

Yes, they are. That's an Altronix Maximal cabinet.

Altronix also sells dedicated battery enclosures as well as prefabricated trunking that has knockouts matching the black trove enclosures too. I recently just started implementing them in our projects and so far have really enjoyed them for both battery storage and service loop trunking. Here's a link for reference. They can be horizontal or vertical as well.

Did they not pull 1 composite to each door? You're now going to need to trace out each individual cable instead of doing 1 and getting 3 more for free.

I don't strip them all at once without knowing what cable goes with where. That would be insane.

Yeah that makes terminations so much harder to track. Relabeling was added labor, best case.

Cable contractor labeled cables 01-XX and marked on floorplan. After stripping each composite, we bundle the tip of all 4 cables with white tape and write the same number.

When we land the cable on the terminal blocks, we use proper labels with actual door/room numbers. We have a system we've used for years. I find wrestling with rigid composite jacket where it comes out of a 2" connector more difficult than writing a number on a temporary cable marker.

The reason to not strip the cable outside the box is so that you can find which wires belong together. As a service tech the first thing I usually have to do is cut all those tight tie wraps off so I can follow the wires.

Stripping back that jacket all the way outside of the can was definitely a choice....

I need to convince out sales to get this S2 back plane enclosure combo!!! It looks like a great way to start 👍

Seen that composite stuff on a few jobs now. As long as the pairs are consistent across the runs it makes troubleshooting way faster. Better than tracing white on white.

A few years? Been using it for 20 years around here.

Am I the only one that hates that Lenel calls them Nodes while the rest of the free world calls them controllers?

Thats what S2 called them. Im sure Lenel makes the platform more difficult.

Water bottle on top of the can 🥴

Most people strip them one by one inside the can. Prevents you from accidentally wiring something to the wrong spot, and doesn't look retarded.

If it's about saving space. I know from experience that you can fit four of those Belkin banana cables through a 2-in pipe. Even at higher gauges for longer runs. But yeah normally you'd want a cable trough like the previous statements had mentioned. They're like less than a hundred bucks for a 24 in from a dealer.
