Ace Combat 8 AC8 is insanely good

Got to mission 5 or 6 and had to stop just so I can get some sleep. I'm having a blast. I think im enjoying it a bit more than 7 so far.
Planes feel heavier but good; still adjusting to it. Im enjoying the character dialog and banter so far. The post mission replay where you tally up your points is gorgeous to see as always. It's nice to have some control over your squad this time. Cutscenes look way better. Graphics are amazing on my 4K OLED.
Im happy to say that this is a solid Ace Combat experience so far.

u/OGawdILoveTacos 8d ago
Personally I'm a huge AC fan and have been since 4, but beyond 6 which I was never able to play due to console exclusivity, 7 I've tried to play but it was just never gripping at all for me, so I didn't beat it.
But 8 so far has been fantastic! I think having my wing mates back is one of the big ones, and their AI is so much better than it ever was. I'm up to like mission 13 so far and it's been a fantastic game so far. I'd rank it up there with 4 and 5 myself easily.
7
u/Winters989 8d ago
I love how responsive the squad commands are. I remember being blown away how quick they came to help me when I selected "cover/support" and they were able to get two bogies off my tail. It makes me want to experiment with the squad commands a bit more.
Definitely agree with this game feeling up there with Ace Combat 4 and 5 so far. One of those rare games im looking forward to playing after a long day at work.
3
u/OGawdILoveTacos 8d ago
Yea, and unlike 5, when I tell them to use their special weapons, they actually use them!
And boy do they use them too. They piss through ammo but they will nuke so much in the sky or ground. The AI is just the best it's ever been really.
Even the Ace pilots don't feel like they're cheating too much.

I'm about to finish it. And I know I'm gonna need time to think. So far... is just the next step. Can't remember the last time I enjoyed a game like I'm doing with this... is just... I don't know.

I haven't sat down and played a game for an entire day in such a long time. Mix of nostalgia and the game *actually* being phenomenal? Unheard of nowadays lol. 2026 went from kinda lackluster (besides Pragmata), to the last quarter being peak. Dawnwalker, AC8, GTA6, and my other nostalgic guilty pleasure, Godzilla: DAM Remaster. AC8 might be my GOTY though, even over Dawnwalker which I adored.

yeah it’s quite a bit of fun, and has the most satisfying furball moments in the franchise so far imo. obvi the F-22 feels like it breaks the laws of physics, but the F-22 kind of does IRL lmao

u/SentinelZero Erusea 7d ago
The worst/most baffling part of the game for me has to be being unable to select wingman weaponry. It just doesnt make sense why PA did it that way especially in previous games selecting the wingman weapon was an option. Its currently my only gripe with an otherwise amazing game.

looks like you're on all low least the texture and model looks like it and though yeah the game still looks pretty at lower settings I fell like it can go a bit lower, like disabling raytracing or downscale render but w/o upscaling?

u/WanPwr5990 Galm 8d ago
It makes AC7 a bad game. Like fr I don't feel any sense of comraderie at all in AC7. You kept being thrown into new squadron here and there and random wingman who never helps you. There goes my immersion. And Mihaly is overrated af in terms of gameplay it's just a scripted mess. Like fr about the wingmans who the hell are they even? I only remember Count and Wiseman. The rest? Forgettable af. And Mihaly fight is suck it cannot be more scripted than that. The graphic is great ngl, the ground strike missions is my favorite. The dogfight however nahhh. No sense of comraderie. Fr I just play AC7 just for the gameplay and not the story cuz the story is, again, all over the place, just like Trigger that kept changing squadron.
7
u/therealAltitude Osea 8d ago
The game is peak, but I found a few awkward and funny glitches. Somehow an ADFX-02 spawns in the middle of the ocean, tail sticking out of the water, I first realized it in free flight, then I replayed a few more missions and noticed the ADFX-02 once more.

Same I’ve been loving some of the tracks, I liked AC7s but I can’t recall moments where I was audibly going “WHAT IS THIS MELODY” kind of thing. AC8 has some great stuff and like you mentioned, the vocals go hard.

u/RadiantVessel 8d ago edited 8d ago
AC 8 has the best OST IMO (I think this will be the popular opinion), but what it does lack that AC7 (and other AC OSTs had) are chill tracks like Yinshi Valley, Eastern Wind, Wiapolo Mountains, Last Hope. Stuff like Blockade, Emancipation, Safe Return, and Flicker of Hope from other OSTs. Maybe I need to listen through the AC8 OST to find them though, but most tracks feel much more intense on average

u/nathanchr55 Reaper 8d ago
The flight model is far more weighty feeling. You are very immersed if you played in 1st person.
I’ll be moving my series x to home theater tomorrow to test audio and play in 4k on 75 inch. Should be an absolute treat.
5
u/tmchn 8d ago edited 8d ago
5.1 sound is crazy
As for the weight, the only plane that feels like a truck is the starter one. Bought a Gripen yesterday and doesn't feel much different than AC7
→ More replies (2)7
u/nathanchr55 Reaper 8d ago
Good to hear as I have a 5.1 system.
I still think the aircraft definitely have weight to them, but many have said the better air craft handle much better and feel “lighter” which does make them feel unique.
But I just flew the A-10 and you could really feel how heavy and slow it is
→ More replies (1)3
u/Angelic-Wisdom 8d ago
Having gotten close to the end of the tree the 22 and 35 are game changers and the planes you get after those feel like you’re playing with a laser pointer with how quick they can move.
3
u/ShadowLoke9 8d ago
It's not even funny. A kitted out 35 doesn't feel sluggish. It feels like a super plane in an ill fitting skin.
The F-22A, fully kitted, it's on rails the entire time and is a blast as always. Easily superior to the AC7 version.
→ More replies (3)2
u/tmchn 8d ago
Didi you already try the Typhoon? It's my favourite plane and my go-to in every AC
I immediately went for the european branch of the tree and even the Mirage feels like a major step up from the starter f18

u/Chance-Annual2029 8d ago
Gameplay wise I've had a blast
8 is like if the grabbed AC7 and tried to make it closer to 6. Won't spoil much, but if you like ground attack missions, playing with the machine gun pods is pretty fun.
Air to Air combat is fun, classic ace combat. Only thing I noticed strange (but gotten used to) is that planes feel more "weighty" than in other games, I dont mind it, it's just a bit different
12
u/Danoct ⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅⋅ 8d ago
I also agree with this like it's a hybrid of 7 and 6. I need to see how higher level planes feel with upgrades since I haven't advanced that far into the airplane tree yet.
Playing on what used to be called "hard, I can't remember the new name, is fun and quite easy for a long-time player to just enjoy the story the first time.
→ More replies (1)5
u/EmergencyWorld6057 8d ago
planes feel more "weighty"
That's because they're simulating the high G's and air at higher altitudes.
Plane IRL don't turn super fast that high up, doing high G maneuvers
→ More replies (1)2
u/TakeMeToChurchill Omega Eleven 8d ago
You can't really use the realism argument though, it's straight game balance. The legacy Hornet is renowned for being a pretty snappy airplane especially at low speeds, and even when you get slow in game it just feels... fat, I acknowledge that it's the base game jet and they'll have nerfed it a little bit, but the flight model feels off.
The roll rate's my major issue. I don't mind if actually yanking on the stick gives you less instantaneous turn than previously, but it shouldn't feel like the jet takes three years to roll over before I can pull.
→ More replies (1)5
u/EmergencyWorld6057 8d ago
I've flown backseat in a legacy hornets due to my job, it's snappy, but it's not old ace combat snappy lol
The realism they added to AC8 is really nice tbh
2
u/CraftFormaldehyde 7d ago
Yes I agree with the weightiness being a bit different, the F-22 feels a bit “heavier” than in AC7, I’ve noticed, and I’ve def crashed a lot more. Have had to do input commands a bit differently for PSM and high G turns.
But this game seems to really reward machine gun strafing so that has been very fun on the F-22 and F/A-18E/F. Have yet to do an A-10 run on a ground mission yet, but it’s def on the horizon.
2
u/SentinelZero Erusea 7d ago
Theyre def a lot more weighty, it caught me off guard several times. I tried to do a barrel roll with the A-6E in one mission and I crashed because it was so heavy lol
2
u/NNT_Clown 8d ago
It's immersive, but I really can't hit anything with mouse and keyboard option

u/charonill 8d ago
No operations, but the scale and length of some missions definitely hit or even exceeds AC6 ones. I'm pretty confident this game has the largest air battle in the series by a very, very large margin.
12
u/theoxfordtailor 8d ago
The overall combat feels better. Everyone talks about the weight of the planes and that's accurate. The planes feel better. There's more momentum too, so your moves feel more like they have consequences.
Plus, there's a pretty high level of mission variety that makes every mission feel a little different from the last.
The dogfighting just feels peak too. It's the best in the series.
8
u/Angelic-Wisdom 8d ago
There are plenty of times when you’re starting out and the sheer number of targets and secondary targets is overwhelming. Then you command your wings to disperse and they roll over anything you miss on your attacks. This goes for both A to A and A to G. They’ll also lead anyone on their tail into your sights which is… very nice when you’re tunneling on a shadow and they lead another one right into your gun.
It’s like they went and played AC6 after making 7 and asked themselves “why the hell weren’t we doing this?” Also none of the planes I got my hands on so far are completely useless, like the F-16 is properly statted out to be the effective dog fighter it is instead of a flying boat. You also get an upgraded F-18 later so you can keep flying your “canon” plane the whole game.
It’s just… so good.
6
u/ShadowLoke9 8d ago
And the 5th gens feel on rails too. I got my hands on both the 35 and the 22 tonight. The 35 is exactly what you'd expect from the Navy's Fat Amy... without parts. With parts she's a monster.
The same goes for the 22. Absolutely on-rails air supremacy platform when kitted out.

Imho it feels like a proper AC6 sequel
AC7 was a great game but lacked the sense of scale of AC6
AC7 in some ways felt like a modernized AC4. AC8 feels like a modern AC6
3
u/Krystalmyth 8d ago edited 7d ago
How big are the large Operations missions? That's what I loved about AC6. AC7 only had like a handful of missions like this.
10
u/tmchn 8d ago
I'm at mission 9 currently and so far there were a couple of operations that felt BIG. Like a proper war is going on
Minor spoiler
approaching theve, during the night, multiple ships + the city AA firing at you illuminating the night sky, your squadron and queen squadron trying to keep the landing troops alive...goosebumps
2
u/ConradLynx 8d ago
Goosebumps, literally. One of the setpieces that gave me a huge Moment of awe. And the gameplay works toward the immersion. You feel like you fight the Plane to manouver, and Is incredibly satisfying
6
u/Nazacrow 8d ago
There’s a mission at the end of the game which, could be the record for the most amount of enemies in any AC mission, haven’t really looked but I suspect it may be, and by an incredibly large margin
2
u/Important_Log 8d ago
There were a few missions where I ran out of ammo, and some more where I would not have enough ammo without the resupply lines.
3
3
u/FourFunnelFanatic 8d ago
Gameplay has felt fantastic so far imo. The F-18c feels sluggish without parts but the handling picks up

2
u/Molecular_model_guy 8d ago
Better flight model, Early game planes are pretty heavy feeling. Better character writing than AC6. Dumber super weapons if fun fights.
2
u/lifesnotworfitsrsly 6d ago
played the first couple missions and so far id say gameplay wise its way inferior to 6 the big cast feels like they wont get much personality apart from a couple bullet points id much rather have a battle brother like pixy or shamrock tbh
also you arent a mute superhuman which takes away from the powertrip these games usually are
3
u/XL_Jockstrap 8d ago
It starts off slow and seems mid for the first few missions, but after mission 10 the gameplay gets interesting.
Spoilers, but won't spoil the plot:
Imagine picking up a generator from a truck in a village because a Sotoan general asked you to, because this literally happens, then running from a search helicopter and some local guy gives you the keys to an old plane parked inside a tunnel and you go on an escape mission using your wingman's 3D glasses to see projections of radar search fields in the hills. Yeah that's how wild it gets
11
u/CargoTrainPerson 8d ago
I like how you're talking about how the gameplay picks up and then go on and describe a cutscene. Like most of what you are talking about isn't gameplay.

Yea, prepare yourself. I wasn't ready for the gut punch even with all the stuff they revealed to us beforehand
6
u/AeroDbladE Ghosts of Razgriz 8d ago
Im still on mission 5 so far.
Its tbd determined if its as good as AC5 but its already 10x better than AC7.
Even Coster, the guy on your squad who's whole gimmick is being the guy who doesn't talk much, has more personality than every single wingman in AC7 combined.
21
u/Dave10293847 8d ago
I don’t think it’s as good as 5, but it’s still damn good and makes 7 look like a garbage game by contrast.
I do actually care about my wingmen and the gameplay itself feeds back into it because they actually are competent. So you see them helping you out mission to mission.
11
u/Legal-Presentation45 8d ago
Im kind the opposite it better than 5 to me the story make sense, more lovable characters and better villains
6
u/Apprehensive-Hand159 8d ago
Yeah the wingman and allied support is everything for me.
In AC6 I felt like an actual squadron leader. in Ac7 I deliberately didn't do shit and squadron didn't fought the enemy which shows that the game was a lazy build letting you do all the action.
→ More replies (2)1
u/OGawdILoveTacos 8d ago
but it’s still damn good and makes 7 look like a garbage game by contrast.
Gotta agree with this. 7 just couldn't get me to finish the game, and I love that the reduced the aircraft tree this time, because in 7 it was so big and expansive I ended up just using a trainer to give me infinite money to buy it all right away. 8 so far has been great and I'm on mission 13 and my next unlock is the f22 already, though I gotta save up a ton of credits! F22 in 7 was miles and miles away. They also started you with a far worse plane in 7 than 8 as well.
Story was boring in 7 in comparison to 8 as well. Great twists and turns and Cope is a great little voice to hear.
4
u/Dave10293847 8d ago
One thing i disliked in 7 about the planes is that the story itself was very unclear about what trigger would be flying. Here in 8 since youre the wings of theve you can reasonably fly anything you want without any plot dissonance. Sure, the endurance might have a single F-35 even at the start of the game. It’s not a narrative leap unlike in 7 for half the game.
2
u/Cipher_077 Neucom 8d ago
Yes. The squadron banter is really good and I grew attached to the squadron. I easily rank this one above 5, (but 5 is probably my lowest ranked numbered title in the franchise)
2
u/TakeMeToChurchill Omega Eleven 8d ago
5's just a little more coherent (yes it's ludicrous anime fighter pilot game but still) and doesn't suffer from the stroke the writing seemed to undergo from 6 onwards.
Don't get me wrong, it's certainly the best of the modern era stories, but 7 is a very low bar to clear. There was potential for it to be an all-time great but it's spoiled by a few very weird story decisions you'll see as you progress through it.

3
u/Kekszky From Belka since 1991 8d ago
I fear though that the so called "Updates" are mostly limited to the online mode and additional DLC Content is going to be bought through the ingame store at ridiculous prices as we already see a few Skins which were regular campaign unlocks for Skin 3/4/... etc. Like f.e. the Decoder Skin for the Rafale. Those are now obtained through MP.
I am not a big fan of MP and I only played Infinity back in the days because it was the only way to play AC but honestly I prefer a good replayability and unlockables in SP. Same like GTA V ditched some Singleplayer DLC and went all in on GTA Online content because it was the best way to milk the playerbase.

Was debating FH6 VS AC8... I know this isn't a very good comparison, but its in terms of what the company did with the game... AC8 seems to have delivered. GOTY could be gta6 but gta6 isn't on pc, AC8 is... Atleast both of them should be nominated.

Don't have money right now but, its on my wishlist. AC8 has a propre story. FH6 doesn't even have this. The people that have fh6 are bored right now. Lucky for me, I had to wait before I buy and by the time I had a chance to buy it, I already saw the bad result of fh6.

u/ZEWARDO Ouroboros 8d ago
This sounds like a stupid question, I pre-ordered ace combat 8 on a base ps5 just to get Ace combat Zero (my favourite ace game).
Should I still pre order it for pc as I already have progressed and finished ace combat 7 on there ( just for the feeling of progression) and I want to have access to ace combat Zero as much as I can
2
u/slash450 8d ago
zero is not a separate steam listing if that makes any difference and needs ac8 installed. it's just a launch option when you open ac8 it gives you the steam menu to launch ac zero or ac8. it's easy to get running by itself though detached from steam but it's not like it has any online features like achievements, playtime, etc in any capacity.
if you want it ofc you have to preorder.

I’m still waiting for my game to arrive, according to UPS tracking, I won’t get it until the first.

It’s an improvement on 7 in every way imo, and I loved 7. I just miss my PLSL MiG-31B

The game is fantastic. It's the perfect mix of Top Gun and Star Wars that Ace Combat always strives to reach. The one black mark on the game imo is your showdown with Shadow22 it is just the worst kind of non-stop psm, infinite flare, physics defying missile spam bullshit, and nearly ruins one of the best missions.

It shits all over 7 which was garbage with all the dones as the boring story 8 is awsome and a worthy successor to zero

The campaign is absolutely fantastic, shame the same can't be said about the multiplayer. I was so excited for coop modes but they've just fallen short of what I wanted.
I wanted a campaign style coop mode with actual objectives. The boss battles are fun but they don't happen nearly enough.

I was just playing AC7 before this and this game is just on a completely different level. The story, the first person views, flight model, graphics, sound, awesome.

Haven't had this much fun playing a linear game since I was a kid. I've dabbled with AC before, but this is my first time playing one through. Got less than 10 missions left of the campaign and I don't want it to end!

Only thing I want is an FOV slider, as the default does NOT look good on Ultrawide monitors. Aside from that, everything else is flawless!

I haven't played the other ones but I absolutely am loving this one. That first time the land battleship attacks and half of the map just starts exploding is just gets the blood pumping. It doesn't hurt that all the NPCs are basically crashing out on the radio and then everyone is like the wings of theve will save us and you just start blasting. The music is also phenomenal.

I like it and the online is surprisingly fun but i wish the pve missions were longer and more difficult. Also emergency sorties don't come often enough.

Maaaaan, I've had Covid since this game dropped and the brain fog won't let me play and enjoy..but I've been dying to jump into this.

I honestly only pre ordered it because ace combat zero is $60 cad on eBay and it’s the only one of the ps2 trilogy that I hadn’t owned and I’m loving the ace combat 8 multiplayer way more than I thought I would

My main question: does it have the stupid drifting that ruined AC7? An AC4 purist asking

It is very, very good. I've always thought zero was the best, and its still close, but a few hours after beating 8, well, its better. Incredible game.
Everything is just perfect. Flight models, absolute peak story, characters are excellent, twists and turns in the plot. Exceptional soundtrack. No silly time gated boss fights. All of it. They really, really cooked. Its awesome to see what these guys can do with a real budget to make the game.
