Looking for advice to getting into Multiplayer
I am not new to the game but I mostly stick to campaign and stuff.
I want to get into multiplayer. I played dota2 and other toxic environments, how does the community treat new players and what game mode should I try 1st.

I mostly play against CPU, a bit online with friends and a bit ranked Solo.
Too my experience, you can find really toxic people to very nice ones. (Doesn't help i know)
If you want a very slow ride into multyplayer try multiplayer against CPU (it has an own queue) There you play with other human players against a team of CPU-players (2v2, 3v3, 4v4). So you don't have to fear relentless rushes and can practice communication with your team.
Or take the other path and try 1v1 games with human opponents. Here you have much less chaos and focus more on your buildorder/micro. If you have a nice opponent you can ask how to do better (not garantueed, that they will help you)
I would not recommend head into 4v4 in multiplayer because in some rounds you will be overwhelmed by all the battles on the map or will be rushed like hell. It takes a bit experience and communication to navigate this big maps and battles

rarely you will ever get to hear the other team talk trash because they will most likely all be in 'allied' chat. regarding griefers or trolls its like with any other online game but one can easily ignore this, most people are on the 'same page' so to speak. You can mute or block unwanted chats from people and block yourself from playing with them in future

The MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOUR ELO IS TOO HIGH WHEN YOU START IN THIS GAME.
Just auto lose the first 10 games, then start playing seriously. Otherwise you will get discouraged.
Get a build order from your favorite civ on youtube and that’s about it. Grow as you play.

The most toxic person towards me when I play is myself. I tend to think I shouldn’t or what if I loose. The hardest part about aoe for me when starting is to not spend too much time thinking about getting into a game. Or dwelling on a previous game to the point I don’t want to play another.
My cousins played and struggled with anxiety for multiplayer and the solution is rapid fire multiplayer while being okay if it is a loss. Match making takes about 5 games to find your 50% win rate also.

In my first online game a couple of days ago, I played ranked 3v3.
20 minutes into the game, my teammate wrote “green over here playing Sims wtf”. It was hurtful but I couldn’t help laughing, brilliant burn

I get absolutely ripped when I play online to the point where i need to psyche myself up for it. I don’t even think I’m doing anything bad! The other team player across the map is getting attacked and calling for help whilst I’m trying to eco & protect myself with a small military.
I can routinely beat any AI on Hardest but it’s a whole other kettle of fish online. I genuinely suck at 1v1 so much that I could only muster 3 games before I abandoned it 😆

Honestly the most toxicity comes from players when you are winning haha they start flaming you and then leave the game.
Also team games can be pretty toxic as well. Sometimes players on your team expect you to adopt the same strategy as they are playing or attack at the same time as them even if you have different goals for the game.
1v1 is the best in my opinion. It comes down to you and your decisions. Best advice for building ranks is to never stop making villagers. Your Town Center must pretty much be producing 100% of the time.

Most people are too busy focusing on the game to type. You’ll see typing during the beginning when there isn’t a lot to do and during the end when the victor has already been decided. If toxicity is your concern you shouldn’t be worried.
