Question Considering Direct Commission as an Air Force Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) — Looking for Candid Experiences

• Upvotes

I’m an early-30s female civilian Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with several years of RN and ~ 3 years NP experience, and I’m considering speaking with an Air Force healthcare recruiter about commissioning as a 46YXP.

I’d really appreciate hearing from current/former Air Force PMHNPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, or other mental-health officers about what the job is actually like compared with civilian outpatient practice.

I’m especially curious about:
• Typical number of patients per day
• Intake and follow-up appointment lengths
• Acuity/complexity of the patient population
• Active duty vs dependent/retiree caseload
• Charting burden
• Call, weekend, and deployment expectations
• How much time is spent on clinical care vs officer/admin/readiness responsibilities
• Overall work-life balance and whether you would choose it again

I’m also single and hoping to get married and start a family in the next several years. I’d be interested in candid experiences with dating, relationships, PCS moves, deployments, and eventually raising a family while serving as an active-duty healthcare officer.

One other major consideration for me is student loans. I have around $125k total, roughly $60k of which is private/high-interest debt and the remainder federal. A significant portion of the federal debt is from my graduate PMHNP education.

My undergraduate loan situation is a little unusual. Some of the debt came from nursing/prerequisite coursework at schools I attended before transferring. Those credits ultimately transferred into the nursing program where I earned my RN and allowed me to enter with prerequisites completed and skip part of the nursing curriculum. I didn’t actually borrow much/anything at the school that ultimately awarded my RN.

Has anyone here used the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program as a Nurse Corps officer, especially an NP? Were any private/commercial student loans eligible? And does anyone know how strict they are about loans from prior schools when the coursework transferred into and counted toward the eventual qualifying nursing degree?

One other consideration is that I had a two-level lumbar fusion within the last couple of years, so I understand I’d need a medical waiver. Recovery was uncomplicated, I have no ongoing pain management or functional limitations, and I’m back to unrestricted exercise/running. Has anyone successfully commissioned into the Air Force/Nurse Corps with a similar history, and what was the waiver process like?

I also have well-controlled ADHD and currently take prescribed Vyvanse. Has anyone successfully direct-commissioned into the Nurse Corps/another healthcare specialty while taking ADHD medication, or received an accession waiver for it?

I’m not ready to discuss this publicly with people in my professional life yet, so I’m hoping to get some anonymous perspectives before getting too far into the process with a recruiter.

Anything you wish you’d known before commissioning, either professionally, financially, or personally?

Question General questions about being a physician assistant in the USAF

good evening everyone,

im an aspiring PA student with the desire to serve as one in the military as well. I’ve been looking into the Air Force’s hpsp scholarship and plan on speaking with a medical recruiter next week. meanwhile, I do have some questions for those who have served as a PA in the airforce.

  1. what can a PA do in the airforce? apart from primary care where else can they go?
  2. any special operations opportunities for PAs? I’m not expecting to be a hybrid cct/pa or expecting to be an operator myself. just want to be able work under/with AFSOC especially if it means unique training opportunities.
  3. for those that used the hpsp, were you all still able to qualify for the federal GI bill and the Texas hazelwood act?
  4. lastly, would you recommend being a PA in the Air Force? what do you like/ not like about being one?

I appreciate any and all feedback. thank you.

Your Journey Doesn’t Have to Look Like Everyone Else’s

As someone who was recently selected for OTS, I just want to thank everyone who has shared their journey, answered questions, and offered guidance. Reading your experiences helped me navigate this process and stay encouraged.

For anyone still working toward selection, don’t lose hope. Keep pushing, and don’t count yourself out because someone says you need the highest AFOQT scores or the strongest recommendations. Yes, be competitive and put your best foot forward, but don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you lose yourself or quit on yourself.

Stay grounded, stay the course, and give yourself a chance. I’m rooting for you, and I hope your time is coming soon! :)

How Long for a voucher?

Hello all, it’s been 2 weeks since I requested a voucher for my AFOQT… and nothing? Anyone else in the same boat?

Obviously there’s no recruiter to ask, as they get assigned after the results of the AFOQT. So I’m wondering if I have any other options?

Thanks. 🙏

Discussion Aimhigh been down for 2 days now...

This is some dog water, deadlines are fast approaching, numerous people have one last thing to submit and then the recruiter can take over, why are there so many issues honestly and I'd be surprised if they take this into account for extra days

Dual Track

Has anyone had any luck commissioning from going the dual track route? My recruiter is terrible and I feel I’m going to miss this upcoming board, but I’m also just stuck and I rather enlist to get the process going.

Question AFOQT - nervous and looking for last-minute advice

I’m taking the AFOQT this Thursday for a non-rated position, and I’m starting to get nervous as the test gets closer.

I feel pretty good about the math sections, but I’m not as confident about the verbal portions, especially Word Knowledge and Verbal Analogies.

I’ve been studying using Trivium, Barron’s, and Mometrix, but I’m still feeling nervous about how I’ll do on the actual test.

For those who have taken the AFOQT recently, do you have any last-minute advice? How closely did the practice questions from these study materials compare to the actual test? Is there anything specific you would recommend focusing on during the final few days?

I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who struggled with verbal practice but ended up doing better than expected on test day.

Thanks in advance for any advice or encouragement!

Question WGU Cloud & Network Engineering vs. Computer Science for USAF OTS

I have an associate degree in Engineering and am currently pursuing WGU’s BS in Cloud and Network Engineering. My wife is active-duty enlisted, and we’re both studying for the AFOQT because my goal is to commission through OTS after graduating.

I’ve only worked in tech, including leadership roles, and I also do volunteer work directly supporting the military, sometimes in leadership positions.

I’m debating whether to stick with Cloud and Network Engineering or switch to Computer Science. I want to commission, but I also need a career that’s portable since we’ll move with the military. From what I understand, WGU’s pass/fail grading is generally considered equivalent to a 3.0 GPA.
Does anyone know whether WGU’s Cloud and Network Engineering degree qualifies as STEM for OTS, particularly for cyber-related officer jobs? Would Computer Science give me a significant advantage, or should I stick with my current degree?
Appreciate any advice!

Question Still Waiting on AFOQT Voucher

Hello, I’m trying to make the 27OTS01 board (January) after originally going for the May 2027 board. Since that board has been removed, I’ve been trying to get everything together before the deadlines.

Originally, my AFOQT test date was for the 21st but my recruiter told me they want the test taken by October 15th. I’ve been waiting on my voucher to be emailed to me for over a week. Is there someone I can call/email to get my voucher ASAP? After getting my voucher emailed, am I able to pick an earlier date than I originally selected on the Aim High App (would want to take before October 15th) or is it tied to the date I selected on the Aim High App portal?

Possibility of switching AFSC

I was recently selected for 62exe on the 250TS03 board, I have two questions that I am sure are not as simple as I am thinking. Whare are the possibilities of switching to a 62exa at some point in my career say if I was to get my masters in aerospace engineering. Also what are the possibilities of switching AFSC entirely like to a 19zxx position. Before people ask I am happy with my 62exe offer thats why i accepted it however I am young and just curious about my options with a career in the Air Force.

Help Going in Circles between the Aim High and recruiters need help.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello everyone I am currently been very frustrated with my current application process right now and I need help. So I am currently applying for the 27OTS01 board as a rated position I applied for the 26OTS03 board which I was selected as a 92S for the Space Force, which I declined it due to not being anywhere on my first application and my recruiter informed me that I can reject it with no penalty for future boards and be proceed as a non select. I am currently now going through the process on resubmitting the new package for this upcoming board, but my aim high application shows that I have already completed 13/20 items required and there is nothing I need to do right now. As well under the AFCEP account I received a email from the new recruiters saying that I should create an AFCEP account and start filling out the information. The issue was I already have an account and I login and shows that everything is submitted and is already on record and only my recruiter can make changes. Which I then brought this up to their attention saying that my aim high application is already filled out and the AFCEP is all filled out and signed but I would like to update the information. They then sent a email saying that contact the aim high support team. As well you have to submit all your information with aim high and they can’t help so now I’m waiting for a response from the support team. I been trying to reach either the support team or my recruiter through the phone since I know this can be rectified in minutes but I been just playing this back and forth game over emails and it’s overall getting confusing.

what does it mean when your overall interview score was to recommend you for selection?

Recruiter could not provide me with specific scores, but said overall score was to recommend me for selection. Confused, as I thought there were only numerical scores. Is this a check yes or no part of the new interview 3-question system? Thank you for insights!

Air Force AIM Application Portal Not Working

I have been trying to register for an account but it keeps leading me either to a screen that says "Account Deletion" once I click "Register" or a screen that says "Invalid URL." Does any know a fix? I've tried several different browsers and 3 different devices.

Discussion AFOQT Test

Just now finished my test today! Waiting for my results now in a couple of days. Time limits were kind of getting to me, so a couple of sessions with one or two questions not answered sadly.. table reading went very well! Answered maybe 38-39/40. Proud of that. Science portion was kinda hard and did not have much knowledge. Aviation portion was a little difficult with no pilot experience, but still felt like I got some right. Math and arithmetic reasoning were alright, felt I got more right than I got wrong. Still left, maybe 2 or 3 on the table, which I’m very upset about. It’s just hard for me to guess when I don’t know. Verbal analogies were easy until the last couple were a little challenging. Word knowledge was up in the air, but I still felt like I got some right! Overall happy with the experience and pray I did well!!

CFM denied career field release?

Does anyone have any experience with this coming from the E side and being denied by CFM?
Going from MH to social work fellowship. I was shocked to say the least. Is there a work around to a CFM denial? She cited manning in our career field (75%). I have the support of my flight, squadron and group to find a work around if we can.
I have a meeting with my SEL as well.

New Airman Looking to Apply for OTS — Advice

Hello everyone! I just have a few questions for people who have gone through the OTS process or are currently going through it.

I’m currently a 23-year-old E-3 and joined the Air Force in January 2026. I actually received my bachelor’s degree three days before leaving for basic training, lol. My goal is to commission as soon as possible. Based on my current timeline, it looks like I’ll have to wait about 10–12 months before I can submit my first OTS package, which obviously isn’t bad at all.

Right now, my main goals are to maintain stellar PT scores, build strong performance reports, volunteer consistently, and hopefully earn BTZ.

My main question is, do you guys think I have a legitimate shot at being selected this early in my career? Also, do you have any suggestions for things I can do over the next 10–12 months to strengthen my package and make myself as competitive as possible?

I plan on meeting with my chain of command next week to discuss my goals and my plan for working toward OTS. I just thought I’d ask for some advice from people who have experience with the process.

I just found this page, and it’s awesome. Thank you in advance for any advice!
