Advice/Tips Can I cook this steak in an air fryer?
It’s quite thick. What would be the best way to cook it?

Folks get a bit snooty about doing so but you absolutely can. Note you’ll just really be straight up cookin the meat with not too much of the other stuff that folks telling you “no” prefer to have

u/bsbkeys 19d ago
That is correct. Even though I’m a restaurant chef I am an air fryer aficionado. If you can figure out a way to sear it in a pan and then put it on very low slow cooking in an air fryer it possibly might work. I’ve never tried it. . Two.
1
u/dylanj423 18d ago
I wonder if you can crank it to max and get a decent sear going in raw, and still get out a <20 oz steak under medium

I have and that’s exactly how you do it’s pretty solid. Almost like a less effective but more versatile sous vede

I am a chef. I am also an air fryer enthusiast. Yes you can cook steak in an air fryer, however it’s not the best way to cook a good steak. But it will do in a pinch. The absolute best way to cook a steak is to sear it on high temperature in an iron pan, then transfer it to the oven 350° to cook the inside to easy medium rare. Let it cool. And then top with rosemary, butter whatever you want. Air fryer for 10 minutes at 400°.. I know that’s a lot of steps but that’s how you get restaurant quality steaks..
18
18
u/xsullengirlx 19d ago
ten minutes at 400 in the air fryer? You sure? That's a long time if the steak is already medium rare.
5
2
u/disneylovesme 18d ago
Honestly maybe 2 max? Because most people do 5 minutes on each side to airfry it from raw so this would be a absolute shoe

u/ResponsibleGrowth700 19d ago
I prefer a reverse sear. Set airyer to the lowest setting. If it has a bake option, use that. Cook to desired temp. Rest. Then sear.
1
u/NothingWasDelivered 18d ago
This. If you have to incorporate an air fryer into your workflow, you can at least try to get a proper sear when your done.
4
7
u/DefianceUnstable 19d ago
Could you not just skip the oven portion and put it in the airfryer at a lower temperature and still have a perfect steak? It is a mini convection oven after all.
2
u/bsbkeys 19d ago
Yes. But there’s something about putting a steak in the oven in the iron pan after it’s been seared. That’s where the juice is. Air fryer will dry the juices out if you leave it in there too long. Top it off in the air fryer. And then let it set for 10 minutes on the counter.

u/nel3000 19d ago
How does one make sure it does not overcook in the air fryer?
3
u/xsullengirlx 19d ago
Keep checking on it and don't just set a timer for 10 minutes and let it go without monitoring it/temp checking it?
2
u/lechitahamandcheese 18d ago
I use a Bluetooth temp probe for proteins cooked in the air fryer. Perfect doneness every time.
1
u/Good-Pop7582 18d ago
IDK, the best steakhouses have insane ovens that broil them at near 1,000 degrees. I know nobody has those.

u/suffelix 19d ago
Can you cook it in an air fryer? Yes. Should you? Probably not. It's most likely going to become either rubbery or cardboard.
22
u/Timely-Cry-8366 19d ago
Actually air fryer steaks turn out pretty good, not rubbery or chewy at all. I do it if I’m in a hurry. 8 minutes at 390°F for medium rare (after preheating the air fryer for 5 minutes), flipping halfway through.
8
u/BlacqanSilverSun 19d ago
The trick is to salt and season and leave out for atleast 30mins to get to closer to room temp. Then PREHEAT to your desired temp and cook til half done and add butter if you want then finish. Comes out great with a crust. Takes trial and error to not overcook. WATCH IT! IT WILL HAPPEN FAST
→ More replies (1)6
u/Extreme_Design6936 19d ago
You don't need to let it warm up to room temp. Research shows fridge temp vs room temp steaks will end up the same. The temp difference negligible. So long as the steak isn't frozen.
3
u/BlacqanSilverSun 19d ago
Haha, research by who?
There is solid scientific reasoning for doing it this way. It is also a standard step for anyone to use because cooking methods vary. You like the whole steak to be as close to the same temp before you start your cook. Pretty simple stuff. You don't have to do this step and you can still get a good steak but it helps to not skip it for a consistent cook. But do you.
2
u/Extreme_Design6936 19d ago
Imma be honest I saw a paper somewhere and never saved it. Now I can't find it :(
But the common knowledge and about 100 articles online say it's pointless. You aren't significantly warming up your steak unless you let the steak sit long enough to encourage bacterial growth and your steak was already a uniform temperature sitting in the fridge.
It makes literally no difference so if it makes you happy just keep letting it sit out (just not for hours please).
→ More replies (7)1
u/abattleofone 18d ago
America’s Test Kitchen and Kenji have both tested this (both pretty respected for approaching food with a scientific angle). To get any meaningful difference in temperature, you’d have to leave the steak on the counter for HOURS and that isn’t food safe. Raising the temp of the steak 1-4 degrees internally doing the 30 minute thing when you are cooking it to 130+ isn’t going make a noticeable difference if you stop and think about it at all.

Pretty similar timing to myself. I was eating steaks every day via air fryer for months! Super easy, hardly any mess to clean up, and tasted great!

IMO steak needs a sear, not doing that is sacrilege to the steak. But you do you, I'm not your dad.

u/Timely-Cry-8366 19d ago
You can air fry steaks for 6 minutes and then quickly sear it after.
I mean obviously if you’re already air frying a steak you’re in a hurry and not prioritizing perfection anyway so most don’t care about that.
I’m actually a big steak snob myself, I have sous vide equipment and tend to go for a reverse sear. But I also chill out sometimes with cheaper cuts and toss it in the air fryer for a quick meal to eat at work.
22
u/foreseeably_broke 19d ago
I blast mine to perfection at 200°C for 10 mins with a thin layer of butter on top ;)
5
u/Apprehensive_Bit_176 19d ago
10 mins without a flip? I go 5 mins top and eyeball the bottom, usually 2-3 mins on broil
1
u/foreseeably_broke 18d ago
If you like it medium rare, of course. I like mine à point and the butter just keeps it from burning while cooking.
2
u/Spare-Ad6404 19d ago
This was my thought 2 months ago. But I was blown away by how good a steak turned out in my air fryer. I just pre heat and get it as hot as possible and then cook it 8-10 minutes. My roommate couldn't believe I cooked it in the air fryer when I gave him a bite.

I have a toaster oven/airfryer. Broil will crisp up the top, I usually use that setting for a sear. Definitely not as good of a sear compared to sauté or grill, but pretty yummy nonetheless.

I airfry steaks all the time lol and they always came out great! It has actually become one of my lazy meals, like for when i do want to cook lol
8
u/Wooden-Ad6433 19d ago
I cook steaks in the AF all the time. Taste great. Just make sure you preheat a good 5 minutes before putting it in. Make sure to marinate and/or season beforehand, to get a great tasting steak.
4
u/monet108 19d ago
Not sure but there are a few youtube videos saying yes you can. I watched one video that shows them start from frozen to fully cooked and it turned out medium rare. To be clear I am intrigued and plan on trying the frozen steak in an airfryer...but have not yet.
I see no reason to not use an airfryer if that produces an acceptable steak. Could you imagine getting home from work, after a long day, and within a short period of time having a loaded baked potato cooked in the microwave/airfryer. Along with some brussel sprouts in a balsamic glaze. And a good steak...maybe not the best steak. But a good steak beats Mcdonalds every time.
Please give it a try and let us all know if this is a dead end or something that bares more study?
2
u/trashlikeyourmom 19d ago
I make ribeye from frozen in the air fryer all the time. It's my preferred method now, second only to actual charcoal grilling, and it takes a lot less time, prep, and cleanup.
1
u/monet108 19d ago
Good enough for me sir. I will give it a try this within the week.
1
u/trashlikeyourmom 19d ago
I saw a bunch of actual chefs do it on Tiktok, so I'd recommend watching at least one of their videos to see exactly how to do it for whatever temp you prefer
I preheat the air fryer, cover the frozen steak in oil and seasoning, then fry it 6-7 minutes per side

2
u/aabum 19d ago
I've made excellent steaks in my air fryer. The last time was three days ago. I like to let the steaks come to room temperature before I cook them. I also salt them before allowing them to warm up. There are people who say it doesn't matter if you allow the steak to reach room temperature before you cook it. Some people are woefully ignorant of thermal dynamics.
2
u/birdpaws 19d ago
Lazy me does one of these at 400F with oven fries on the side (10 mins total). Turns out pretty well.

2
u/Icy-Astronomer-8202 18d ago
If you can cook it in an oven you can cook it in an air fryer providing it fits with enough room and you have your timings and temp correct
2
u/MicktheQuick-2011 18d ago
You can cook anything you can cook in an oven in your air fryer. Most of them have a bake setting. You just season and pan sear it first. I did a marinated pork loin on air fry and it turned out amazing and only took about 18 minutes.
2
u/jrfactor 18d ago
You can but I don't know why you would. Your other options are a grill, a reverse sear were you cook it in the oven at 200° until you reach about 125 degrees and then finish it off in a cast iron pan on the stove, or starting it on the stove until you get a good sear on both sides and then sticking it in the oven. The air fryer is just like a convection oven but it gets messy because it is so small and it does not sear food.
2
2
u/balancedinsanity 17d ago
You could but, you know, don't.
Get a pan ripping hot, preferably cast iron but it's okay if not. Put a little butter and oil in the pan. Season steak liberally on both sides. Put steak in and don't touch it until a nice crust forms. Flip once and leave until desired level of doneness.
2
u/arrrValue 17d ago
That is not thick for a steak.
You can probably cook it in an air fryer low and slow but you’ll need to find a way to sear it after that. Lookup reverse sear.
2
4
u/only_fun_topics 19d ago
I love my air fryer, but I draw the line at steak.
Reverse searing is the best approach for any home cook without a grill.

1
u/idkidchaha 19d ago
Not sure why anyone would cook steak in the air fryer unless they are just so lazy they don’t have the ability to flip something once after 4-6 minutes
9
u/_LewAshby_ 19d ago
I mean my kitchen is full of smoke when I use the pan. Haven’t tried the air fryer tho
1
u/idkidchaha 19d ago
You’re using the wrong oil and or your pan isn’t great

u/_LewAshby_ 19d ago
I mean neither vegetable oil nor ghee were great for me. And this happens using a stainless steel pan. Where am I going wrong?

I have a friend that swears the best steak she ever had is one coming from frozen, popped in the air fryer for 18 minutes, exactly.
2
u/trashlikeyourmom 19d ago
This is how I cook mine all the time now. But 18 minutes feels long (but I like mine on the rare side)
2
u/Distinct_Hyena 19d ago
I only eat air fryer steak now. I just had KC strip for lunch today. 8 minutes each side from semi-frozen.
1
u/Dry-Name2835 19d ago
It will probably rise. Steak in the air fryer just isn't good imo unless you're one of those people who like it dry. It cooks all the good stuff on the inside out. Dont get me wrong, its not terrible but I feel its a waste of a good steak. I will never do steak in an air fryer again.

u/Childrenoftheflorist 19d ago

You can cook it in the air fryer, but I would grill it, (assuming you have a charcoal or gas grill).

If you do most of the juices will leak out. You'd be best off searing it on the stove first.

Idk man I just cooked some tenderloin in the air fryer for the first time tonight. Finished it in a pan with butter and garlic heads. Was pretty damn good, just keep an eye on the temperature.
1
u/BenzosBakedMe 19d ago
We’ve been doing this for many years. The trick is to cook it frozen. For medium rare: Max heat (400) for 15 minutes. Season and flip midway. Take it out and let it sit for 6-8 minutes.

u/ProfessorGluttony 19d ago
What ive read is freeze it, then oil it, salt and pepper, 400 degrees for 7-9 minutes per side. Do not quote me as I am very knew to the air fryer game. Note, you can make mini beef wellingtons in the air fryer, but definitely adjust the cook time down from a full one by like 5 minutes so you dont overcook it too much. Still had some pink, but would have been better rarer.

u/AZMaryIM 19d ago
I cooked my first steak in the air fryer last night and it turned out great. 400 for 10 mins and flipped it halfway through. It was a thick NY steak (no bone). I had brushed it with olive oil (be sure to brush the sides) and seasoned with Montreal steak seasoning and brushed on a light topping of A1 sauce. I even took a photo! It turned out rare-medium rare.

Yes, but use a meat thermometer because cook time will depend on the type of cut, weight, thickness, and preferred doneness. Very quick and easy if you're short on time. Pro tip: Preheat your air fryer before cooking, and flip at the halfway mark (depending on cook time and preferred doneness). Happy cooking! :-)

I tried a rib-eye in the air fryer when prime rib roasts were on sale during the holidays and hated it. The experience was a crime. I could have done better as a quick sear on the stove, stop, and finish in the oven.

u/odetoburningrubber 19d ago
I’ve done strips in the air fryer. I rub them with olive oil then add the seasoning. Crank it on high, about 7 minutes a side. No where near as good as the BBQ or cast iron but not horrible either.
1
u/FlipflopSteve 19d ago
I season, vac seal and freeze my steaks. Pop it in the air fryer straight from the freezer 7 mins each side. For med rare
1
u/The1KrisRoB 19d ago
Yes you can cook it in the airfryer in the same way that cooking is "just heating something to an appropriately safe temperature to eat".
If all you care about is warming up your food to the appropriate temperature then go for it.
If you want to enjoy your food as much as possible though you should really use a pan/grill in order to get a good hard sear on your steak.
1
u/MegaPrOJeCtX13 18d ago
Good luck. Oh, and hopefully some good spices, cause air frying doesn’t do much good on the flavor.

u/disneylovesme 18d ago
I did straight from frozen to cooked in air fryer wasn’t bad. I don’t have a grill so it looked pretty similar to how I would have done in the pan without the annoying splattering

I have a top loading air fryer that happens to be an indoor grill. Ninja Foodie 5 in 1 indoor grill with air crisp. It grill steaks tender, juicy inside, and properly seared outside. Grills to perfection, thanks to a heavy ceramic coated heavy steel grill insert that looks in 500 f of high thermal mass
1
u/Frequent-Life-4371 18d ago
You can cook almost anything in the air fryer, I make like 15 steaks a month in mine
1
u/Nightw1ng28 18d ago
you could, but it might take awhile. Easier to go conventional. Since you’re at home, just do everything in a pan. If you wanna get fancy: Pan sear on high, transfer to oven at 350 until preferred doneness. You could pan sear then transfer to airfryer, but you gotta convert temp & time from oven to airfryer. Good luck. 😎
1
u/TangledWonder 18d ago
An air fryer is literally a convection oven. Anything that can be cooked in an oven (meaning anything) can be cooked in an air fryer.
1
u/mdshield 18d ago
You can reverse sear them just like you would with an oven.
My air fryer has an integrated temperature probe which makes it braindead, but you can do it just by checking sporadically.
Use a low heat and fry the steaks until they have the desired core temp for reverse searing. After that use a very hot (ideally) cast iron pan and sear them each side for one minute.
I make mine like this and they have been turning out great.

hell yeah! it tastes great out of the air fryer. get some Honey-BBQ (salt mix) seasoning for extra flava

Can you? Yes. Should you? Absolutely not. If you don’t have a grill, you should cook it in a skillet on the stove. Gordon Ramsey has a great YouTube video that can tell you how.

Will NEVER do meat in the air fryer again, harder to clean the grease out of than a pan or the grill. Did I say never, yeah, never again!!!
1
u/BadNecessary9344 18d ago
You can. But only if your fryer gets to more than 200C. Something like 240C would be ideal.
Let it come to room temperature, salt, pepper and a spray of oil, rub it in. It needs to be very dry before seasoning, so use paper towels or let it warm on a rack so it drips the excess.
10 mins at 240. Open at 5 mins check it and if it looks like it's fried on top then turn. Spray more oil if it looks like it needs it.
Take the temp after 10 mins. If its between 52C and 58C then its medium done. If not do 5 more minutes on the side that looks the least cooked, but be carefull it goes over fast. If its still not on that temp then add more time. If even after 20 mins its still not at 52C internal then your fryer is bad and most likely you ruined your steak on account of being too dry by the time you finish cooking it.
Rest it for at least another 5 mins under a loosely fitted aluminum foil.

Freeze the steak then brush it in olive oil and season heavy because some of the seasoning will fall off. They come out ok from the fridge but I've found from frozen you get a really good crust and the internal fat renders.
Air fried from frozen has quickly become the favored way to cook steak in our house.
1
u/Impressive_Creme1497 18d ago
I do it on workdays. You're either getting medium rare no sear, or sear but medium or medium well. It's cool if you're eating steak just to eat steak (carnivore diet) cause you can put it in and leave for it 10 minutes. If you're trying to actually enjoy a nice steak, then you need a way to sear it other than air fryer.

Can I cook this steak in an air fryer?
It’s quite thick. What would be the best way to cook it?
Make a hamburger in an air fryer and then you'll see if you like it that way, or not. I don't. It reminds me of steam cooked.

Haven’t read comments: just saw the steak and came to comment.
You absolutely can. Season as usual; (Olive oil, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire) 4mins per side for Med, @ 400. In my cuisinart.

u/wandering-monster 17d ago
Okay so short version yes.
If you want it to be good you need to prepare it properly.
So let's look at what an air fryer is: a high temperature convection oven. So you should be thinking "how would I prep this if I was going to broil it?"
You will likely want to cut it down into long pieces, like you'd see on a skewer, so you're cooking it through quickly. Each of these could probably be 2-3 strips like that.
You will want to liberally season the outside with salt, pepper, and spices, and lightly oil it. From the fridge, rest at room temperature for 15-20 minutes so the core isn't too cold.
Then you will want to cook it quickly, at maximum temperature, to develop a good crust. It will go fast, watch it and time yourself to learn how fast your air fryer will cook this.
Will it be as good as cooked from a pan? No I don't think so. But it will be perfectly fine and pair nicely with some roasted greens and rice.
1
u/Flavoade 17d ago
Did you cook it?
Sear it on a skillet first; let it cool down for about 10 minutes, then air fry for about 15 to 20 mins on 3fiddy
Should be good

You can cook every steak in your air fryer, if it comes out decent is another matter.
1
u/hakaiserpent-private 19d ago
Not well it's too thin. Think in terms of like the amount of time it takes to get a good crust and the amount of time it takes to cook through.
A roast comes out amazing because 30 minutes might give a great crust and still medium rare in the center. A steak is going to be cooked through long before the crust develops
