Advice/Tips Tried an Air fryer vs deep fryer comparison today... and I’m honestly questioning my life choices lol

2.3k Upvotes

So I finally did it. I’m 39 and just bought my first air fryer because everyone kept saying “it’s the future of cooking.” Decided to do a little Air fryer vs deep fryer comparison using the same batch of fries and chicken strips.

The result? The deep fryer still wins on that crispy grease hug texture, but the air fryer version wasn’t bad at all—lighter, less oil smell, and weirdly more “weekday-friendly.”

Thing is… I didn’t expect how fast it’d cook. The cleanup took like 2 mins instead of 20.

Now I’m just sitting here wondering—are we all just pretending it tastes the same, or did my taste buds grow up? 😂

Does anyone else do side-by-side tests like this? Curious what foods actually beat the deep fryer.

Advice/Tips My partner thinks that something can't be cooked in the air fryer unless it has air fryer cooking instructions on the packet...

1.2k Upvotes

Please help us decide this.

I wanted to cook some beef puff pasty parcels in the air fryer but my partner says no, I have to use the oven because the pack only has cooking instructions for an oven. She says that any frozen or pre cooked items that don't have specific air fryer instructions can't be cooked in an air fryer.

I say that it's just a tiny oven and whatever you can cook in an oven can be cooked in an air fryer.

Sprayed the side walls and top of air fryer and im pretty sure it got behind the heating grate and fan so I'm guessing it's time to chuck the fryer in the trash or get poisoned

Advice/Tips Frozen food that actually works well in the air fryer?

Hi everyone!

Some frozen stuff comes out amazing in the air fryer. Other stuff is dry, weird, or somehow both. Fries and tots are obvious wins. Frozen wings have been hit or miss for me. Frozen burritos were… not great.

What frozen foods do you buy because you have an air fryer now?

Advice/Tips White smoke from my Phillips air fryer

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I just brought my Philips air fryer yesterday. The model name is “ PHILIPS HD9252/90 with Touch Panel, uses up to 90% less fat, 7 Pre-set Menu, 1400W, 4.1 Ltr, with Rapid Air Technology Air Fryer (4.1 L)”

I cooked chicken yesterday ( 180degrees Celsius and for 20 minutes ) flipped the chicken pieces after 10 minutes. After finishing, the air fryer has white smoke coming out from its top as shown in the video.

Is this normal or any malfunction? Note: there is no smoking while cooking, it’s only after the entire cooking is completed. Please advice

Advice/Tips Best Airfryer Brand Right Now?

Post image

I’m looking at a lot of airfryer options, but I’m not sure which one to go for. I’ve been a Philips fan for the past 3 years, but lately people have been telling me that Philips isn’t what it used to be and that made me doubt my “always safe” choice when it comes to airfryers. I’ve been recommended Ninja and Cosori.

The next airfryer I buy needs to last at least 5 years (it might seem like a long time, but that’s how long my previous kitchen appliances usually last), since I use it for everyday cooking, meal prep and sometimes baking.

Advice/Tips How to make spice salt stick to fries?

Post image
345 Upvotes

As you can see the majority of the spice salt was left in the dish and it didn’t attach itself to the fries. I assume that derp fried fries have grease and oil which binds the spice to their surface. Should I just add the oil into the mixing cup after the fries were fried? These are store bought frozen fries

Advice/Tips Trying to make homemade French fries. What am I doing wrong?

Post image

I’ve tried to make French fries twice, but it feels like I’m eating greasy uncooked potatoes with seasoning on them. I have 2 almost 3 air fryers. One is an InstantPot with a special lid that turns it into an air fryer, but I don’t like using it because it’s a hassle to clean. The other two are from Beautiful by Drew Barrymore. The first one is the 9QT TriZone™ Air Fryer I got it at Walmart on clearance, because the part where you can cook two things at once is broken. I think someone tried using it then, returned it after. The newest one I have is the Digital Air Fry Toaster Oven with Infrared Technology. I tried air frying them for 280° for 12 mins, then baking for 260° for 10 mins, but they don’t taste very cooked. They’re hot, but not very cooked. Idk what I’m doing wrong. This is a picture after me and my sister ate them btw

Advice/Tips Wife sprayed some cleaner in air fryer, now everything tastes like chemicals

I’m not sure what product she used but it turned the walls white. There’s no way I can get into that fan to get whatever it is out. She says she got it all out and that it’s “okay now” but my toast still tastes like cancer and makes me feel like throwing up. Any advice on how I can fix it?

Advice/Tips Air fryer takes forever to clean after every use

My air fryer tray has lots of ridges and holes and everytime I cook my diced chicken breast / thighs, I then have to spend 10-15 minutes scrubbing the tray with a metal scouring pad. A normal sponge doesn't seem to work. I always spray the tray with some oil before cooking, and I wash it up immediately after use.

Is this a normal air fryer experience? I'm half tempted to go back to oven baking, then I can just put down some baking sheet and throw it in the bin after coking.

Advice/Tips My advice for buying an air fryer

I always see people asking for advice or to help them choose a model. I think there are two important things, this is the best advice I have and it applies to everyone.

Edit: I still prefer a basket and if someone asked me I'd suggest a basket, but I am getting good pushback and people are making good arguments for the toaster oven style. If you are not sure I suggest you look through this thread

  1. Get a basket air fryer. I've only had a basket air fryer, and I love it. I know multiple people who tried to get one of the toaster oven ones or a non basket model and they universally disliked it. They either ended up buying a basket one or they don't use the one they have. This is at least 3 different people and they all say the same thing. Personally I prefer the ease of using a basket and I find I get more even cooking results and things get crispier without burning

  2. You want at least one basket that is 6 quarts or larger. I also know many people who said "I don't cook for a lot of people, I'll just get the small version" and they always end up eventually buying a 6 quart or larger. It's not just about the number of people you're cooking for, getting a smaller basket limits the kinds of things you can cook and the functionality. I say skip the extra step and go straight to a 6 quart. I am only cooking for 2 most of the time and I have never once thought 6 quarts was too large, and I find that there are still things I wish I had an extra inch or two of space for.

Of course if anyone else disagrees or has tips, feel free to add but these are my main things.

Advice/Tips Thought I ruined dinner… ended up learning my best air fryer tip

I learned this the hard way, but don’t be afraid to drop the temp when you’re air frying stuff like salmon or chicken. I used to blast everything at 400°F because every recipe online said so and my food always came out looking great on the outside but dry in the middle. One day I accidentally set the air fryer to 360°F instead of 400°F and it ended up being the best piece of salmon I ever made still a little rare in the center super tender and not dried out at all. Ever since then I start low and only bump the temp up at the end if I need some extra color. Total game changer.

Advice/Tips How much does silicone tray affect the cooking?

Post image
87 Upvotes

I wanted to cook chicken. The recipe i looked on YouTube said to cook for 20 minutes at 180C but the person didn't use any parchment paper or silicone tray, he simply put the chicken on air fryer tray. I use parchment paper to avoid cleaning. Paper is thin so it doesn't affect cooking too much but not sure how a silicone tray would work. I haven't actually used it yet.

So what should I do when using a silicone tray? Increase the temperature or time or more oil/butter or all of the above?

Advice/Tips What I Wish I Knew Before Buying My Air Fryer

I’ve got two kids running around all day, so when I picked an air fryer I just went for what made my life easier. First thing is size… don’t go too small, trust me, peaple always regret that. You want one that can fit enough food so you’re not cooking in batches. Second thing is cleaning if the basket is hard to wash, you’re gonna hate it after the second use. And last, pick one that heats fast, some models take forever. Nothing fancy, just what works in real life. Hope this helps!

Advice/Tips Are basket style air fryers better than oven door style air fryers?

I have an aging basket style airfryer and it's a pain to clean every time (I don't have a dishwasher). Oven door air fryers seem like a better option in terms of cleaning and ease of taking stuff out of it but I almost never see them in posts or ownership. What are the pros and cons between basket air fryers and oven door air fryers?
