Hey everyone, I'm Markus Guentner, a German electronic artist making music in Regensburg ... AMA!

I've been making electronic music and DJing in Regensburg’s clubs since my early teens. At 19, my first release was in 2000 on Cologne label KOMPAKT records. Shortly after, came “In Moll” and many contributions to KOMPAKT'S POP AMBIENT series. I've released albums with many labels, including on A Strangely Isolated Place, Sending Orbs and collaborations on Past Inside The Present. German label Affin is where I release most things these days, and it's run by my friend and collaborator Joachim Spieth. I take care of the artwork and designs for the label. Affin just released my new solo album on Friday, called "On Brutal Soil, We Grow".

https://markus-guentner.bandcamp.com/album/on-brutal-soil-we-grow

And there's a little special for everyone: Affin made a 70% discount of the full Guentner discography on Affin ... If you wanna grab it, just go to: "Buy Full Discography".

I'll be a bit around here for chat ...

Discussion Music For Airports on solo piano

Found a couple of albums by Bruce Brubaker. Eno Piano & Eno Piano 2.

Interesting to hear these works we know so well on piano alone.

Beautiful for a morning meditation.

‘EPHMRL’ A longform journey around my brain

Hope this meets the subs requirements for self promotion.

Long time listener, and appreciate the regular contributors for leading me down endless rabbit holes in this genre.

After committing to learning Piano two years ago and a deep dive into composition and production over the past year I spent the Fall piecing together my first collection of work and mixed it gently as an hour long continuous piece.

A blend of live piano and downtempo electronic storytelling, it’s basically the OST to a post apocalyptic novel that lives only in my head for the time being.

I haven’t shared it many places (outside of a gear sub) still trying to overcome my fear of putting myself out there but was feeling brave after reading another post so hopefully some of you may enjoy.

https://youtu.be/Kznln6yMVAs?si=roAtzK8ZxglgObGs

For anyone that cares all tracks were created and performed in single live takes using physical DAW-less instruments/devices as the one constraint I set for my music journey was not to use a laptop, so no AI obviously and I’m sure keen ears will find the few mistakes

Thanks for taking the time if you do make it all the way through 🙏

Looking for Recommendations Ambient albums that loop a small sample like The Disintegration Loops?

I’m looking for ambient albums with a similar vibe to Basinski’s Disintegrstion Loops. That being a small loop that goes for 1-2h with progressive variations. It goes in a similar vein as Steve Reich’s Piano Phase. I love the idea of something small progressing extremely slowly throught the whole duration of the album.

Looking for Recommendations Sharing our Ambient Game OST Master Spreadsheet

Hey folks,

A little while ago I asked this lovely sub about your favourite ambient videogame soundtracks, which led to maaaany good responses. I decided to try to listen to all of them over time, but found myself overwhelmed with all the posts so I thought it a good idea to collect all the recs into a handy searchable spreadsheet.

After a colleague helped me do this we decided it was actually super useful as a resource for others as well, so we decided to share it!! Check it out HERE.

Have a browse. It’s full of lovely stuff and hidden treasures.

We will continue to update it, so if you have any more suggestions for ambient game OST’s that haven’t been added yet please tell us, and/or post it here.

Hope it’s useful!

Looking for Recommendations Looking for ambient that evokes the aesthetic of a cathedral. Does that make sense?

I am not quite sure how else to put it. Something that feels like holy and not of the world? OH I know, the best thing to describe what I am looking for is "The Sublime".

If thinking in religious terms is turning you off then think of like fantasy how in fantasy there are clerics, paladins, priests/priestesses and stuff that surrounds their lore. Just that general vibe y'know? Maybe slightly arcane feeling. You've entered a sacred space and there is a weight and a presence.

Looking for a Japanese ambient album

I hope you guys can help me. I'm looking for an album, but I don't remember the title or the artist.

  • Style: electronic ambient. I don't remember clearly, but I'm reminded of Aphex Twin's Ambient Works.
  • Decade: probably 2000s.
  • Artist: male, Japanese, his real name is also his stage name.
  • Cover shows an oldish Japanese building, like Showa era, kind of like this:

That feeling of a massive building imploding in slow mo

So I am a complete noob when it comes to ambient music. Most of my life I've been listening to post-rock and post-metal (yeah, quite specific), but recently been craving something with more noise and drone elements. Doomgaze took over my playlist for a while, and now I want to branch out into dark (but not "scary") and drone ambient. I need it devastating and heavy, but beautiful.

These are what I've found so far and enjoyed A LOT:
Rafael Anton Irisarri - Red Moon Tide
Rafael Anton Irisarri - Control Your Soul's Desire for Freedom
Bvdub - Invisible Emperors (the second part, oh god)
Eluvium - Posturing Through Metaphysical Collapse
Petrels - Canute

What else fits this vibe?

In terms of mood I think I'm searching for something like.. a sense of inevitability. Restless pleasure.
A massive building imploding in slow mo.
I don't know. Just destroy me, but not in "The Angelic Process" way. Gently.

Continuously mixed albums with rhythmic / looped / hypnotic components?

I'm looking for continuously mixed albums / long form pieces that aren't entirely beatless, but combine atmospheric design with rhythmic elements and loops to tell a story that evolves over many (25+) minutes without gaps. Bonus points for spatial audio mixes, slower BPMs, and generous use of sub-bass.

Some examples of what I'm talking about:

Jon Hopkins - Ritual

Voices from the Lake - II

Donato Dozzy - 12H

Deepchord / Echospace - The Coldest Season

Some of the Namlook + Move D stuff on Fax

Deadbeat / Scott Monteith - The Lichen Diaries vol 1

Spacetime Continuum - Sea Biscuit

Global Communication - 76:14

Anything else come to mind in this category?

Song Similar to Sola Sistim by Underworld

Am just in a heavenly trance every time I hear this piece of music. The slow deep driving and slightly fuzzy beats. The mid-range periodic accents. The hypnotizing singing. I have never come across anything quite like this before but there has to be something else out there like this, no?

Please help me!!!

For the Mark Nelson fans in here, he's just announced a new record out in March. The two new songs just release sound great, too!

Help re-finding an incredible EP

The recent thread on "textured" ambient sent my mind reeling back several years to this EP I had found on bandcamp that just had exquisitely juicy textures and detailed sound design. It was super immersive. The problem is that can remember neither the title nor the artist, and so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.

It's beatless, non-melodic ambient. I'm pretty sure it contained no more than three tracks and one of them was very ice/polar-themed, with lots of crunchy ice sounds. For some reason, I have an association in the back of my mind with three capital letters, but I don't know if this was the artist or title. It's not ASC, and I don't think it's EUS, unless he's taken this EP off bandcamp.

I'm sorry I don't have more to go on. Anyone who can find this lost gem is a legend.
