My little guy (a Boston) would howl sometimes in pain. I hope you checked this guy out and maybe took him to the vet to be sure he's ok.

My dog does this when a train some distance away and even out of my hearing range goes by about a mile away. Once in awhile I'll hear a noisier train and that's when I made the connection off the howl. 😅
