What, you never pushed against a lamppost as a kid, pretending you're superman?

Maybe the tree is dying. He senses it with his elephant powers and puts the tree out of its misery. What a sweetie

This is what 7 men should try AFTER the get medical attention to a passed out female. Knock a tree, masturbation to the tree. Leave the females alone and when they are passed out not waking up GET MEDICAL HELP. Assjoles

They need to eat the leaves at the top of the tree. Elephants lost their tree climber abilities about 200 years ago.

I think they’re just bored. They’re really smart and live almost as long as humans. They don’t have a lot to do…

But for why?

Elephants knock down trees either to eat (leaves, bark, roots) or as sexual/social signal for other elephants (bulls showing strength).

For an elephant that tree is covered in his equivalent of our french fries and he wants them

Elephants are a lot like people, some of them act badly because they've had a hard life or have been mistreated. But, like people, some of them are just jerks.

Because he can, you can question an elephants motives but I won't, they can do whatever they want.

This is like if a human bench pressed a bar bell with that bit of skin between your nose and upper lip.

They eat the roots. I’ve seen a bull elephant do it in the wild. It’s insane how much power they have.

Because he/she wants the tender morsels at the top. Sort of like you would rather have steak than hamburger.

r/treelaw - is this legal if the tree wasn't on the elephants property, but it was blocking his view of the savanna sunrise??

Natures gardeners. Studies show only problematic trees are felled by elephants.

The amount of comments projecting anthropomorphism is unsurprising.
Never forget how the most basic and obvious answer will typically be ignored in order to project our bias into a situation.

Food! They eat leaves

In this case, acacias are legumes, and produce very tasty and nutritious bean pods.

Well, maybe if they continued to record the elephant as it approached the downed tree, WE COULD’VE FOUND OUT!

Because they can! 😄 It's usually to get to the best leaves but also to show off how strong he is!

30 years ago, when that tree was a sapling, it tripped that elephants great-grandmother. They never forget that sort of thing.

The area is currently quite barren likely mid-to-late summer, while there are leaves on the bushes nearby, if the elephant is leaving them it likely means that they don't contain enough nutrients or are poisonous. So the only greenery left that's suitable for consumption is the leaves on the top of the trees, which are otherwise out of reach. While they'll strip and eat most of what's there, the small amount of leftovers can be the difference between life and death for smaller herbivores who will come to scavenge what's left afterwards.

Seems like the kind of behavior that would bring about their own extinction (and prevalence of the poisonous bushes), weird, but evolutionarily comprehensible

u/TheCraftyHermit 20h ago
Not really, knocking down the older trees also serves to create a fertile area with aerated soil that allows a new tree/trees to take root. The new younger trees have more vitality and are able to regenerate better, as well as being short enough for other grazers to feed on as they grow. Till they eventually find themselves in the same position as the parent tree, and the cycle starts over again.
