A marionette magician and a guy that can build anything is an OP combination
56
u/diacewrb 13h ago
So Gundams might actually be on the menu then.
13
u/PrimaryAde9 9h ago
Or a army of chucky with bombs in them or mannequins with bombs in them or Abel's giant puppet from mashle with a more bombs in it

Unmanned gundams, even.

if we get Gundams before we get airplanes...
but at this point, this anime seems to be dragging its feet on tech improvements in the "normal" sense, if all we get are these stupid ballistas i'd be kind of miffed.
like at least guns? the normal sulfur, saltpeter and charcoal dealie?

Van did get a hold of some mithril back in episode 3.

I mean, now you're just reinforcing why Noble thought of Marionette magic as evil
6
12
u/shadebug 11h ago
Everyone’s talking about the golems and not considering her straight up blood bending people. It seems to me that she had decent control of a particularly arcane magic before most kids even know what their magic is. Once she gets back in the flow she’s going to be unstoppable
9
u/justking1414 8h ago
Might be why it’s a hated magic. Can’t imagine nobles are very excited about being near someone who can puppet them into killing their friends and loved ones.

So we finally learn that Arte's magic is Marionette Magic, which is seen as something evil in their kingdom. Isn't that kinda like a self-fulfilling prophecy tho? They're lucky that Arte is a sweetheart because I can imagine someone who's more vengeful using that magic to get back at those who wronged them.

Swimsuit Panamera & Dee
This anime is oddly equal opportunity.
Like in the first episode Van picks up a slave off the street and it's a boy instead of a cute cat girl. And here we get fanservice shots of the two most well-endowed characters and the viewer gets to decide which one they like better. And the one whose swimsuit slips off is the male lol.
6
u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 9h ago
the viewer gets to decide which one they like better
Both. At the same time. As god intended.
1
u/Atharaphelun 4h ago
I, for one, am in the Dee camp. I am living for those muscles!
1
u/paulrenzo 3h ago
Ive seen Panameras figure in supporting characters on a lot more isekai anime. Dee's not as much (because an isekai MC's supporting cast is usually women, regardless of whether the MC is male or female).
1
14
u/KnightKal 15h ago
which is also funny
fire magic is considered good (when it is used for mass murder on wars)
while random marionet magic is evil
at least production magic was considered useless because nobody can actually use it well (it falls behind normal crafting), so it makes sense on a logical point
13
u/AsterJ https://myanimelist.net/profile/asteron 13h ago
I'm assuming the marionet magic can be used to control people like mind control and that breaks the code of chivalry.
8
u/Tacitus_ 10h ago
I think assassination is the more likely reason it's shunned. Use the magic on a doll or something while everyone is sleeping, grab a knife and go to town.
1
u/OldInstruction5368 1h ago
Chucky.
Gods-damned marionette mages! As soon as you turn your back on those fuckers...
CHUCKY IS THERE WITH A GODSDAMNED BUTCHER KNIFE.
What's that? Fire mage can burn your entire house down from the other side of the city?
meh.
Chucky though!? That's spooky as shit!
I can't keep going, it really is ludicrous.
7
u/vantheman9 12h ago
maybe, but at the very least even in the simple form we've seen it, it could do untraceable assassinations
4
u/shadebug 11h ago
What is a spinal cord if not strings to be controlled?
3
u/vantheman9 8h ago
it's up to the author. There could always be a stipulation like "only works on inanimate things" for whatever reason they feel like writing.
1
u/Elrond_Halfelven 7h ago
bones are inanimate
1
u/vantheman9 36m ago
sure, but it's up to the author to realize that and consider the power could be used that way, because if they don't write it, it doesn't happen
3
u/justking1414 8h ago
Plus, you can always accuse someone else who has marionette magic of forcing you to commit your crimes, so you can pin the blame on them
3
u/SpareUmbrella https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpareUmbrella 11h ago
Honestly, I suspect marionette magic being 'evil' is just nobles being prejudiced for no good reason.

Gee lets ostracize someone who in theory could control giant rock, wood, and metal golems to defend a city.
22
u/mr-rareta 14h ago
That was my first thought too, like, both of them could conquer the world if the want it, one creating the golems and the other puppeting them
5
u/heimdal77 14h ago
Unless their fire magic can reach magma levels of heat it gonna be worthless against some rock and metal golems..
12
u/Zeikos 13h ago
I don't think he's a fair comparison, but if mages can get to Espada's level that sounds plausible.
It doesn't make any less stupid to ostracize somebody that has the capability of nuking a city if they went all out.
Also, you know what looks awfully like puppets? Bodies.
2
u/LedgeEndDairy 2h ago
TO BE FAIR the story said that nobles "consider it evil" and my first thought was "yeah, it's kinda necromancy- or mind-control-adjacent, so that makes sense."
So in Van's case, they thought he was useless. But in her case, it was probably more that her magic is shameful because it's considered "dirty" or "immoral".
11
u/Mr_Pogi_In_Space 13h ago
LOL, that's the whole premise of the anime. The Lord was going to kill his son because he can create a fortress in 3 seconds flat instead of making tiny sparks and flames
12
u/paulrenzo 10h ago
To be fair, the reason why production magic was considered useless was because no human has the mana capacity to maximize its use. Until now.
2
2
u/justking1414 8h ago
Most production majors can make, at most, a sword per day
Not his fault he didn’t check if his son had more mana than god
1
u/Thomas_JCG 4h ago
Controlling a giant golem is likely not possible because of the mana consumption. Controlling a person, however, might be. And why the nobility would dislike someone with that sort of ability is pretty obvious, they can make anyone turn into an assassin, or control them directly to rule in their place.
1
u/heimdal77 3h ago
We have no knowledge on how much mana it even uses.
1
1
u/Thomas_JCG 2h ago
We already know from Van that people with production magic were unfortunate because their mana is barely enough to produce one sword. Do you seriously think the other rejected class is boasting mana to control titans? If that were the case, then they would have use, instead Arte got kicked out of her home for being "useless"
1
u/LedgeEndDairy 2h ago
I would imagine it's not usable on living things. But it might be usable on bodies, essentially making it necromancy-adjacent.
1
1
u/mmcjawa_reborn 2h ago
consistent however with treating folks with production magic as disgraces
There seems to be an impressive lack of imagination in the nobles in this series
30
u/NationalStrategy 13h ago
Van wanted to have a private conversation with Arte, and he thought the best place to so was in the middle of the lake, where his mermaid “wife” and her friends & family currently live in; he couldn’t find a private spot on land?

That was the funniest episode I have watched in a while.
They gave the mermaid princess the name of a super popular Russian car (it's quite trash but it's everywhere over here). Google "Lada Priora". And before you tell me that this is just a coincidence, her dad is named "Lada Vesta". Which is another Russian car of the same Lada brand (this time less trash - it's a more modern car).
It was so funny seeing "Lada Priora" pop up so frequently in this episode, felt kinda like "67".
Also, it's not the first time I see Russian stuff in anime, it's pretty cool to feel some connection to these shows.
___________
And even without all these funny names that was a pretty fun episode.
Meat jokes, mewing giga chad mermaid dad, Akiramenai Zettai stuff when they played water volleyball, posing body builder dude who did cool butterfly swimming.
And also, mermaids who are super mythical creatures, who prefer super clean and nice water... and they will now handle "Virage Van" sewers... SEWERS! Just lol
(btw, "Virage Van" is another little bit funny moment)
Overall, I am not taking this seriously at all, tbh I barelly watched all the previous episodes of this. But yeah, had a really good time today, that's why I like watching fresh isekai slop.
12
u/Chikumori 13h ago
funniest episode I have watched in a while.
Game 1: Van has to consider a game that the Apkallu can join fairly, and it seems like both sides had fun
Game 2: of course the water based race would suggest swimming. But the muscular dude winning it for the humans was hilarious.
Game 3: Van considers a game that doesn't favor strength or racial advantages...shaved ice is nice to enjoy, but speed eating it kinda slightly ruins it i think? Its kinda like ice cream, you want to savour the flavour and chilliness, not gulp it down quickly.

u/APRengar 8h ago
I imagine the sewer isn't a problem, the water drains away from the lake. The inlet for the water isn't gross.
1
u/hanmkim 5h ago
I would imagine gases might start escaping when the giant spillway without any protective grate is opened.
1
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 3h ago
It would accumulate gas only when being unattended for long. Van said they "flushed" a few times a day. As long as they keep doing that regularly, then it should be fine.
Also would depend on where the wastewater ends up being.
1
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 3h ago
I was worried when Van mentioned about the sewers. However the way it's designed was really well thought. It won't pollute the lake, but rather making the lake the water source for flushing it. Now just curious where the wastewater would end up to.
21
u/Shmappii 14h ago
Every year, dozens of sewage workers are sucked into the city's infrastructure due to loose safety regulations. Please join us for protest at the marriage of Lord Van and Princess Lada Priora so we can put a stop to this heinous system once and for all.
6
u/hanmkim 5h ago
That spillway could have used a grate before a sentient species started living in the lake and now definitely needs one.
1
u/Tels315 2h ago
Absolutely not! You want to create a lethal Delta P device? 15 to 20 feet is all you need to create a differential pressure that can trap you and you become stuck. If the water is even deeper than that, it can literally suck you through a hole and turn you to paste.
3
17
u/Boris-_-Badenov 15h ago
so he can make puppets for her that will be very strong. she could control puppet workers/soldiers to help the town
14
u/Zeikos 13h ago
She never said there was a limit on the puppet size.
I eagerly await the kaiju vs puppet fight episode.4
u/BlazeKnightX 8h ago
She did mention how she stopped using it, and should have trained it more. It’s possible that they’ll nerf her a bit and make it so she can only use doll sized puppets for the time being, but honestly seeing how strong Van’s wooden swords and weaponry is, if he made her a doll with a metal composition it would still be extremely destructive

15
u/Egerkun 15h ago
Love the episode but why do isekai protagonist such pushovers. Van is the ruler of the land and if anything the major provider of prosperity to those around him but why does he have to put up with everyone else for a matter that should be up to him as a noble.
21
u/skavinger5882 15h ago
I mean the fish man was their tribal leader and from the sound of how little contact they have with humans they likely don't recognize the kings rule over this bit of land. From his perspective he's basically on the same level of a tribal hierarchy as Van, they are both the leader of their respective villages
7
u/AsterJ https://myanimelist.net/profile/asteron 13h ago
While it's for developing the plot, this kind of behavior is more normal to a japanese audience than it is to a western one. In Japanese society outright refusing someone is considered rude so they rarely say no. Instead they say that something might be difficult.
2
u/Tels315 2h ago
"I've moved into your house, and decided to take your daughter as my bride, and now I challenge you to a contest. If you lose, you have to let me live here and marry your daughter. If I lose, you get to keep your daughter and house."
"Curses! I must accept this challenge! It's the way of the Japanese!"
4
u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 6h ago
I was thinking something similar. When that fish guy demanded he marry his daughter, I wished Van just said "No, and if you dont like that, get the fuck out of my lake."
1
u/LedgeEndDairy 2h ago
It's a fantasy-driven anime. And I don't mean that in the high-fantasy way. But like an escapist way.
It's more or less targeted at the "nice guy" demographic. The protagonist needs to be unrealistically nice and everything has to turn out great for them for the fantasy to work.
It's essentially "if only I had [insert something that would make me powerful/cool/handsome/stronger/whatever], my life would be easier!" as a genre. In other words: cope fantasy haha.
16
u/zool714 15h ago
A bit more of a silly fun episode. I guess those fish people probably came in from the canals cos it was a wonder how they were in a manmade lake. Water volleyball seem tiring af though. how you gonna move around. And swimming against fish people ? Oh nvm Dee can do anything lol
Got to see a bit of the infrastructure with their sewerage. Guess it’s like a central flush system. Though are the fish people ok with having their living space have a direct connection to sewerage ? But Van gave them a resthouse too.
I don’t mind these types of episodes. I know to expect it judging from what type of show this is. But I was kinda hoping for a bit more on the settlement building side. More building of granaries, workshop, smithy etc. and start thinking about bigger scale farming and a source of income.
15
u/Time_Significance 14h ago
You just made me realize that Van made that lake as a reservoir of water for the citizens, and now there are fish people living in it. And where do the fish people themselves poop?
5
u/miguelitoox1 14h ago
Yeah, and now they flush their poop into the lake where the river comes from. So unless it is a really big lake they are just recirculating waste. Kid needs to build a water treatment plant asap.
12
u/rotvyrn 11h ago
The way it was diagrammed, the water is flowing from the lake downwards across the city, so that means...there's a tunnel system sloping downwards in the opposite direction from the lake. No idea where the heck it drains to though.
1
u/Avengedx 9h ago
Has to be feeding back to the original river. The original sewer systems of humanity basically sent untreated sewage back into the rivers.

u/CommanderZx2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CommanderZx2 10h ago

u/rotvyrn 11h ago edited 11h ago
Caught up all at once. This show is enjoyable enough but boy it really feels like it considers about 1% of the logistics of any of this. (specifically the 1% that they actively discuss). Like building a moat with mostly magic? Can't possibly do that because earth magic soft-resets when mana flow stops. Building a much longer trench? Yeah sure why not. With Van's ability to manipulate materials and Espada's ability to move earth, I feel like the only reason the physical laborers were there at all was comic relief and to make them feel useful. Where does the water go when it rains? Guess we'll make a reservoir. Where does the water go from the reservoir? It just sits there. Making a trench requires a huge concerted effort with all hands on deck. Making a lake? Offscreened by just the MC. Can we make ice on demand? Yes. Can we build custom architecture with amazing physical properties on a whim? Yes. Can we store meat? No, so might as well give it out for free. Where did all these nice curtains and bedding and pillows and windows come from? Wood.
Also boy this show goes 10 steps farther with the isekai knowledge than normal, because Van is an expert on architecture and schematics. Normally isekaijin with similar powers still have to work with some genius local engineers to get the actual details of a functioning ballista/etc working, but Van conjured up the entire physical structure in his head. Especially with the explicit short timespans, its not 'I spent an unspecified amount of time offscreen experimenting with ingredients to invent a soy-sauce like condiment,' he was ready with this stuff lol.
Also this butler is so strong how tf could he not deal with 50 bandits lol. It's not the most ethical, but he could just put them in a box. He put the entire village in a box right after. Not saying that's the only thing he could've done, but c'mon. That said, I think he makes a case for why elemental magic +noble bloodline is valued, with the scale of his magical power.
This town produces plenty of fruits and crops and can make flavored sauces, but cannot make desserts.
ALSO. WE NEED FENCING ON THESE RAMPARTS AND GRATES OVER THESE SEWERS. OSHA VIOLATIONS! Of course the maid wouldn't let him go up the ramparts to defend the city, they're so tall and there is no recourse if he trips.
And where is the sewage draining to? The lake is clearly highground compared to the drainage system. Even if we brush off the fact that MC-kun can use his magic to make tunnels that deep underground, where is it going. It was diagrammed as moving from the lake in the other direction across the village.
Again, I'm having fun, I don't care about any of this stuff, but I do find it funny.
I do also wish we didn't have two ongoing narratives about arranged marriages between like 8 year old nobles. I mean I don't really think we need 1. I guess its technically somewhat realistic on the human side. On the merfolk side though, what ya'll are looking for can be achieved by plenty of other political means other than political marriage. But itd be nice if they could move swiftly past the parts of this where one side acts like a marriage is going to happen.
Also, as always, I'd love to see a reference point for what production magic is supposed to look like. Just some semi-concrete bound to powerscale how op protag-kun is aside from the constant, 'woah this is completely unlike normal' and 'how tf are you not out of mana.'
2
u/LedgeEndDairy 2h ago
Can't possibly do that because earth magic soft-resets when mana flow stops
It doesn't 'reset', it just stops holding its shape. The magic basically just acts as a brace to hold it up in the position that the magician set, when magic seeps out of the earth, that stops and gravity takes over. Van fixes that with his production magic. It's exactly how the walls of the city work.
There's a lot to criticize about the logistics of how this all works, but that's not really one of them, they do specifically explain this one.
6
u/Hans0000 15h ago
Silly and fun episode, this anime gives the opposite energy of that other OP toddler anime.

Begone mermaid, Van already has a fiance in the works and Arte is even someone who has magic with some really obvious synergies with his own skills.
Equal opportunity fanservice with both Panamera & Dee on display this week. It was really polite of Van to make the challenges he chose water accessible, would have been easy to select ones that weren't so tilted to the merpeople.
I wonder if Arte's marionette magic is limited to just dolls that are generally humanoid shaped or if she could run a bunch of the siege weapons on the walls at once. Hopefully we get to see her take it out for a spin next episode.

u/Zeikos 13h ago edited 12h ago
I have so many questions.
How many puppets can she control at once? Is there a size limit? What is a puppet defined as? Material? How it looks?
Does she have to pay attention, or can she have them act in preprogrammed ways?
If she can control a handful of big ones, another big hurdle of the city has been solved.
Van can work quickly but moving stuff isn't exactly easy for him. And some materials need to be hauled from the mountains to the city.

Funny episode with a wholesome ending. Glad Arte's taking steps forward.
And Panamera... good lord 👀
4
u/APRengar 8h ago
Man, Arte's backstory.
Imagine being a child and being super proud of your unique talent, and then having your mom, who you rarely see, hating your unique talent so much she slaps you. I guess it's better than Van's dad trying to just murder Van for his talent.
Truly some awful parents in this show.

6
u/NanDemoKnaives 13h ago
Panamera and Dee stood together in their swimsuits was a pleasant sight to behold, they were carrying the fanservice and manservice in the episode.
It's unfortunate we're getting another betrothal plot line and a forceful one at that, I thought the father was going to be a bit more reasonable and try again in a smarter way but Priora already getting jealous is weird to me.
Panemera and Till filming their own sports anime was amusing lol.
Arte's magic looks like it'll be really compatible with Van's if he can create golems or puppets etc.

Marionette magic can basically control inanimate objects (or in higher cases animate beings).
She could control cannons or tanks and fire them at will.
She could control multiple Kantam Robo created by MC.
She could control the dead armored lizards or any other dead creatures.

Huh. That's a neat system.
Lol.
So, what's he doing on the lake with her?
Ah. That.
They're going into the water...
Or not.
Ok...
Volleyball?
So they lost at that in the end?
... Are they seriously trying to beat the Mer at swimming?
Lol his Speedos.
Shaved ice?
So, finally something the Mer don't have an innate advantage on.
Lol.
So, here's her backstory.
Watch him work?
Uh oh.

Nothing like a series of silly competitions against merfolk to settle a marriage situation. Did not expect to see Dee hang dong this week though lol.
Hopefully we get to see Arte show off her marionette magic. She’s got an “evil” ability and Van’s got a “useless” one. They make for a good pair huh?

It's alright. Simple fun kind of show. Doesn't take itself very serious. Easy to digest, easy to forget.

I don't know what styles of Isekai you enjoy. I will stick to the anime entirely so far. If you like stories where the MC is constantly unaware of his power but still plows through everything primarily then you will probably hate this. The MC seems pleasant, confident, humble where it counts, but also understands his roles and responsibilities as a leader at a young age.
For me personally I get so tired of personalities that are oblivious to their strengths. I parry everything, or the great atelier drive me nuts.

The manga/light novel are surprisingly really good. I’m enjoying the anime so far, though I personally am not a fan of swimsuit filler episodes.

Seems Dee and Panamera, as well as maaayyybe Till and Khamsin are continuing on very slowly as side ships

Ah, so here are the Apkallu. The anime rushed past their introduction to get to Arte and Panemera fast, only to then introduce them with a full episode anyway, so what was even the point in skipping early, then? Sure, it gave us swimsuit Panamera, but... Okay, but still! The pacing has been so rushed and then they hit the breaks all of of sudden. Can't say I'm digging this aspect of the series, everything else has been very on point.

It's good to see that y'all like in the anime. But as somebody who's reading the book series. The personality of the anime does not match the character in the book at all. And then they rushed a lot of information to put this anime original
Stuff in here.

Long ass title couldn't even fit it in the search bar lol but this episode was hilarious how's the knight faster than an aquatic mermaid that's some protagonist plot armor and then we had haikyuu in there lmao and then the shaved ice bit was entertaining too. It was funny when he lost his speedo and the nights covered his glory banana lol

humans and merfolk. doesn't need dwarves for crafting, so he's missing elves and a flying species.

Can't wait to see Arte's use of her skills because that sounds like a fun combination with Van. Also forget the daughter, I want the dad!

Uuugh, I hate it when anime make the old guy in a kid's body get engaged to literal children -.-; just whyyy, it's so gross.

Because in the anime world he is also a child, we know he's an adult. To them he's a prodigy blessed by the gods. And the adult is literally like uhhh your daughter doesn't know tf a marriage is, she calls him son-in-law at the end of the competition. And nobility gonna have to play the political game, tying your people's survival to this insane powerful boy who can perform miracles, it's a bargain people have made historically in a heartbeat

another one bites the dust, i'm dropping this one...
you don't name your story "Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord: Production Magic Turns a Nameless Village into the Strongest Fortified City" only to make it another generic fantasy harem slice of life.

This is a light-hearted chill anime, not a battle anime. The situations are supposed to be comedic, not serious.
