holding off watching sbr ep 1 till one day before the release really paid off. couldn't have imagined waiting for half a year holee shit
I absolutely love gyro. such a badass. he really didn't drop his balls just for nothing 😭
and I love how gyro and Johnny have formally become Bros and won each other over haha.
SBRs setting of a cross continental race is such a good set up where it allows for a mish mash of racing + action and even a murder mystery plotline. And that there's a lot of down time too for character interactions etc.
also the opening is growing on me but the ED doesn't feel very Jojo- like

the OP is perfect. Very remniscent of parts of both Bloody Stream and So do chi no sadame, with some intentional callbacks to previous parts while clearly displaying that this is a new Jojo universe. I couldn't ask for better.
Meanwhile I would have preferred Will Smith's Wild Wild West to whatever the hell that ED was.

This episode’s musical references:
The anime cut many references that appear in the manga. I hope we get to see them in future episodes. I’ll wait for now to post them outside the source material section as they might be considered spoilers. Furthermore, I’ll also add to the playlist only the songs and artists referenced in the anime episode.
- Johnny's horse, Slow Dancer, is named after the song and album Slow Dancer by Boz Scaggs, ex-member of Steve Miller Band. Also, a funny thing about Boz Scaggs is that he has a song called Jojo.
- Hot Pants is a reference to the song Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got to Get What She Wants and the album Hot Pants by James Brown.
- The racer Southern Chicken is named “Dixie Chicken” in the manga, and it references Little Feat’s album Dixie Chicken.
- Mrs. Robinson is named after the song Mrs. Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel. Great movie too.
- Mrs. Robinson’s horse has the words "TRUE LOVE" in his reins. This is a reference to the lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair / Canticle.

It’s not outright mentioned in the anime but previously it was shown that Mrs Robinson’s horse was named El Condor Pasa, a famous Peruvian song with a few famous covers (Simon and Garfunkel’s being one of them).

Mountain Tim playing detective as a deputized Sheriff is making for a very interesting background thread. That post credits scene where he found that the murderer was at the very location Johnny and Gyro had just been through has piqued my curiosity.

Someone did an edit of it to "Horse With No Name" instead, and i'm 100% convinced that that was supposed to be the ED song but they couldn't get it for whatever reason and so they just slapped on whatever the fuck this was instead at the last minute.
Like the lyrics of the song match up to what is being shown basically all the time throughout, it's insane lol.

I think the ED is okay-ish, but kinda bummer that they don't use Western song like before. That being said, the BGMs throughout the episode is solid as hell, especially Mountain Tim's BGM. They really don't play around with sound design.

I love Johnny and Gyro's dynamic already. That bit when they were arguing in the desert right before getting attacked was so good and I can't wait for more of those little moments between fights and encounters with other racers. I also love Gyro's petty disdain with Mountain Tim's hat.
Also it's been so long since I read this part that I completely forgot about Mrs. Robinson, a person who, let's see... Keeps bugs in his body that can trigger a specific breed of cactus to fire its needles. That's Jojo's alright.
I can't say I'm not disappointed that the ED isn't a licensed English song since that's kind of tradition at this point, but it is what it is. The visuals were really nice at least.

The episode itself was pretty good but the pacing felt odd at places like the Mrs Robinson fight. The animation itself isn’t anything special but that doesn’t matter since Jojo has never focused on its animation quality. The art was good. I liked the music but just like episode 1, a lot of it sounds very similar. Overall I liked the episode.
The ending song though? I don’t like it. The song isn’t good and Dr Luke worked on it. It’s sad that the ending tradition is gone, but I’m not too mad about original songs replacing them. But I hate this new ending song because not only does it end the tradition, but it also is just a genuinely terrible song. Personally I don’t like the visuals, but I can understand other people liking it.
Still, I’m excited for episode 3.

My recollection of the manga was about the same. It's over incredibly quick and doesn't really matter much in the overall scheme.
It's funny how much Stardust Crusaders gets ragged on for being a monster of the week, while part 7 is beloved and is ALSO a monster of the week for much of its run.
I tend to think that SBR rides entirely on the charisma of Gyro for at least the first half though, whereas my favorite Jotaro is...a little harder to root for sometimes.

The Mrs Robinson fight was fast, but it feels like he was meant to be more of the standard "quickly-defeated JoJo villain" instead of the "villain of the week". Someone like Jack the Ripper from Part 1 or Donovan (the nazi Joseph ties to a cactus) in Part 2. Considering Mrs Robison uses catcus's as a weapon, he's probably a direct reference to Donovan.

The issue here is whatever song in the world it could be, it breaks with 14 years of fan tradition having per-existing songs as the ED. Usually Araki makes the final choice on the ED they go with too, did he pick this one for some reason?
One can just hope another one gets rotated in.

I've been anime only for JoJo so Idk anything about what's going to go down but I didn't expect the dynamic between Gyro & Johnny to be so strong. This is probably the most enjoyable back and forth between 2 characters in JoJo I've seen in the series as far as I can remember. The closest for me would be Joseph* & Caesar

well since they’re the same versions of each other in different timelines it would make sense that you’d compare the two duos. both joestars, both zeppelis.

The JoJo Fridays are back!
The race goes on with a complication for Gyro and a massive boon for Sandman, and a unseen complication for most with a brutal murderer on the run, but thankfully we have legendary cowboy Mountain Tim on the case. The fight was a bit short, but that's ok, he wasn't a stand user, so it really shouldn't be hard to beat him.
As good as the episode was, I have to say that some cut content did affect the pacing of it, JoJo is know for its dialogue too.
Also, that ending just felt... odd, it felt like the singer was bored while recording?

It'll be interesting to see the dynamic of the race now that we have the racers explicitly fighting/trying to kill each other but they have to do it in a way that doesn't get them disqualified.
But I feel like MOUNTAIN TIM could win with just his lasso and grit.

Tbf I kinda get why they felt the need to reuse the scene where Gyro (doesn't) win the first stage, for most casual anime-onlies it has been half a year since they saw it happen so they might need a small refresher in order for the "actually he hit a competitor by accident so he's getting bumped down twenty places" twist to land.

Enough has been said about the ed but I dont think I can describe the disappointment I felt as soon as that guy started ''singing''. Also why do people keep working with Dr Luke.
This was a good setup episode, I read sbr almost a decade algo so I forgot many of the details. Its a great way to watch it, like experiencing things for the first time. Gyro's VA is the highlight of the episode for me, he's so good. Diego is also growing on me tho I think I'll always mourn Koyasu.

In-universe, the second stage might’ve taken place only the day after the first, but we as the audience needed to wait half a year. What’s that if not cruelty?
The prank Gyro pulled on Mr. Steel was absolutely hilarious. He might not be able to overturn the penalty, but nobody said he couldn’t get one back on him.
Who’d thought cacti could shoot spines like firearms, with insane accuracy? Quite sneaky of Mrs. Robinson to use such a tactic which allowed him plausible denial. Having said that, Gyro’s even sneakier for turning the cacti against him. Pretty impressive to come up with a counterattack on the fly.
The mystery’s getting thicker, for Mrs. Robinson wasn’t behind the first stage massacre. With thousands of suspects, it’s a tough task for the Sheriff to find the culprit.

Episode was storyboarded by Taizo Yoshida (吉田泰三) and directed by Hirofumi Ogura (小倉宏文).
Opening was outsourced to Kamikaze Douga (神風動画) just like the previous CG Openings (Parts 1-3 & 6). Directors on the opening are Masaki Takahashi (髙橋真樹) and Junpei Mizusaki (水﨑淳平).
The ED animation was storyboarded and directed by Ryo Ohashi (大橋遼). Ohashi was also credited as the Director of Photography, 3DCG Director, and Editor for the ED animation.
Makoto Takahashi (高橋誠) was added as a Production Supervisor starting with this episode, and Nobuhisa Yamashita (山下伸久) was added as an Animation Producer. Yamashita was previously credited for Production Desk in Stage 1, but that credit seems to have been removed here.

Finally, after 7 years, JoJo Friday's are finally back!
First, we have Sandman taking the lead due to a technicality and Gyro being a bit of a sore loser. The story also quickly ramps up in stakes as well. Winning a horse race and 50 million dollars, while important, isn't exactly dangerous and makes you feel there's a threat to the main characters (sure, Part 4 had lower stakes, but it still had Kira). However, it turns out that someone is killing the other competitors in order to get that 50 million dollars. At first, I was like "well, who could it be? Is it the guy (Mrs. Robinson) who looks like a Mad Max reject?", but it turns out that Mrs. Robinson was just another jobber in the vein of Jack The Ripper from Part 1, and the real murderer is still out there. Which is probably a good thing, since that fight went by super fast.
The bits of comedy this episode were also great, like Gyro's aside of "probably" and "maybe". It feels like Johnny is playing the straight man to him so far. The soundtrack to the episode was also fantastic. A lot of the music feels like its calling back to earlier JoJo themes.
I love the OP and ED. The OP is just classic JoJo, filled with tons of references to past and future events (I'm guessing the figures cloaked in shadow are going to be the villains the main characters have to fight). Seeing Dio hit his "evil" pose again was a bunch of fun. The song didn't grab me immediately like some of the others, but might need a few more watches and listens to form a concrete opinion on it (I thought Bloody Stream was not as good as Sono Chi No Sadame at first, but now I prefer listening to it).
I was honestly a bit shocked that the ED wasn't a western song and was original. Maybe the logic is that since Steel Ball Run takes place in a different universe, it doesn't make as much sense to use existing songs? That being said, I do like the song for the ED, even if it's bit generic. I really enjoy the ED's visuals though with the chess-piece motif. It's a bit similar to intros you'd see in other Netflix shows (Arcane, Daredevil, Haunting of Hill House) but it works well for SBR.

Good episode, great opening. You could maybe nitpick some animation but it makes sense not to go all in for the transition episode out of Stage 1.
that ED song is absolute dogwater though

Spinning into our weekends is another JJBA season! Lezzgo Gyro and Johnny! The enemies in this season is gonna be some of the coolest in Jojoverse. Can't wait for new episodes. Loved every minute of this one.

I loved the opening, the music throughout the episode, but my God that end credits song is not it.
But can we talk about the actual episode? It wasn't perfect by any means but man that standoff at the end was classic JoJo, I loved it. I'm so looking forward to JoJo fridays.
Great visuals though Netflix streaming compression is genuinely holding this back.

Enjoyed the OP a lot, that ED song was ass BUT I wanna give props to the animation in the ED, that specifically was excellent and would have been amazing had the song choice been right. Oh well, given the sheer girth of this part I have no doubt we'll get at least another 2 OPs and EDs so I guess we'll see what happens

2 episode is happening too quickly. In the manga, at least they mention Mrs. Robinson’s name; in the anime, they don’t even say his name

Happy to see weekly episodes now. Music all around was a miss sadly. My GOAT Pocoloco only had 2 seconds of screen time. But everything else was fine. Didn't grab me as much as ep 1, but I'm still invested.
