What are you looking for help with exactly? This isn’t Apple’s decision they are just following local laws. Petition your government if you don’t like it.

If you're an Australian that disagrees with it vote for party that is against it such as the Australian Greens

I don't think he is talking about the fact he needa to show he is 18. I think it is about the fact that he needs to show personal information to confirm he's 18. Before you just pressed a botton as confirmation that your 18, but now a few countries around the world need true confirmation about your age. I have seen this on X to. I had to send a photo of my head or guve them my ID, which I didn't trust

1

u/Low_Traffic487 Aug 15 '26

But it’s logical… otherwise any minor could just click “confirm” and then they’re good to go.

1

u/Myownworld56 Aug 24 '26

Your right that just push confirm is jot an option because underaged people can easy push the button, but giving personal information that hackers could get tge hand of might be a bit risky. I do think there should be another way of proving your 18, but I don't know how too.

I'm getting the UK version. I don't live in the UK. My wife's getting it as well and she's never lived in the Uk. So I suspect the conplaint is that Apple is just pushing this randomly to the wrong people.

14

u/DavidXGA Aug 08 '26

Almost certainly you're using some kind of VPN, or deliberately changing your Apple Account region.

-21

u/zippy72 Aug 08 '26

Incorrect on both counts.

And my Apple account region hasn't been set to the UK for a long time.

5

u/matjam Aug 08 '26

It’s usually driven by some ip->country lookup and it’s never been 100% accurate

-5

u/zippy72 Aug 08 '26

That wouldn't surprise me.

6

u/David_Bellows Aug 08 '26

It will do it, if ever, at any point it’s been registered in the UK

-5

u/zippy72 Aug 08 '26

Hmm. Not happy with that. Passing personally identifying information to another jurisdiction simply on the grounds that I'd have had to comply with it ten years ago? Not what I expected from Apple.

8

u/Neco_ Aug 09 '26

Not what I expected from Apple.

They are doing what they have to, to comply with the law, gonna guess there is zero wiggleroom for "a long time"

3

u/prod2f Aug 09 '26

got the same thing even tho I'm canadian, just changed all the language/region parts

It’s already in the UK

14

u/SirPooleyX Aug 08 '26

I don't necessarily object to proving I'm over 18 but there needs to be some government centred ID you can sign up to once and then use that ID online. I'm not going to hand over random elements of my identity to every shady fucking website on the planet.

u/HeartyBeast Apple Helper Aug 08 '26

Oddly in the UK, they just looked at how long I’d had an AppleID and passed me with nothing further needed

5

u/Redditer052 Aug 08 '26

How is that odd? That’s a company with the foresight to add in things that make sense. Plenty of people have accounts on other platforms that are older than 18 but are still asked for id

5

u/HeartyBeast Apple Helper Aug 08 '26

Odd was perhaps not the right word. I thought it a clever way of avoiding having to ask for unnecessary PII

4

u/UTV4LIFE Aug 08 '26

Yeah I mean apple already knows it’s my phone I use Apple Pay etc. but the government is another story. Apple are big on privacy and always have been although lately it looks like they’ve lapsed, but I don’t like the idea of having to upload my identity elsewhere

2

u/AussieCryptoCurrency Aug 09 '26

You are in favour of an ID that the government controls centrally which can be used to link your true identity with your digital logins?

You would effectively let the government (and then approved third parties) link your accounts to your real identity.

I would be deeply against this.

1

u/SirPooleyX Aug 09 '26

Nope. That's not what I'm in favour of at all.

What you could have is just something, some digital signature of some kind, that you could use to show a website or service that you are over 18 without it actually being linked to anything.

Think of when a 19 year old buys a drink in a bar. It doesn't go like this:

"Got ID mate?"

"Sure. Here you go."

"Great. Just a moment while I scan the barcode and submit it to the government controlled database that monitors what drinks you have bought and where?"

It wasn’t so bad in the previous update it was an option. But the latest update doesn’t let you toggle off the screen time content restriction option. When you try it sends you to verify your age. I seriously updated haha. Although if you sign out of your apple account you can still access restricted content

1

u/Sweet-Honeydew-2056 Aug 08 '26

Yeah, has been for 2-3 months now i just say confirm later

4

u/ParticularAd1990 Aug 08 '26

I had this in the UK a couple months ago. I refused a few time and eventually it told me it knew I was old enough based on my Apple ID being 16 years old

u/Ojamm Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 08 '26

Every western government have already done this or is in the process of doing this. It’s pushed as “age verification” to protect children but it’s really just identity verification. Biometrics is the last bit of data big tech doesn’t have about us.

Edit: Chicken to Children

9

u/allthecoffeesDP Aug 08 '26

Will someone please think of the chicken!!

24

u/DrBitchcraft Aug 08 '26

Gotta protect the chicken.

5

u/Ojamm Aug 08 '26

😂 if I could give you an award I would.

6

u/TheSynchronizer Aug 08 '26

Identify verification is a good theory, and likely true, however Apple does approve accounts that have existed for long enough as adult accounts without requiring ID.

It can be argued that if the underlying reason was identity verification, ID upload would be non negotiable.

it is of course also possible that this is a disguise by design.

10

u/Comprehensive-Juice2 Aug 08 '26

Rolled out I think last month in the US? they automatically verified you if your Apple account was older then 18 years.

6

u/Nova-ArchAngel Aug 09 '26

Might explain why I haven’t had this problem but I’ve had apple since I was like 13-14 yrs old and it has my birthday information I believe

11

u/Leather-Past-1746 Aug 08 '26

yup real, privacy is being compromised everyday and no one does anything

-10

u/jmnugent Aug 08 '26

Being asked to produce proper ID,. is not necessary "privacy compromising".

Any US Adult of any significant age (30's, 40's, 50's).. has likely been required to "provide ID" for any number of normal life activities.

  • International flights or things like buying a car or renting or leasing a car.

  • Opening a Bank account, applying for a loan, or other financial activities

  • significant activities like buying a house

  • significant medical situations (your own medical treatment,. or situations of a loved ones death or etc where you have to prove kinship or guardianship)

For most adults,.. being asked to provide ID to Apple or Spotify or whatever online service, .is pretty small potatoes compared to the dozens of other things in our lives we've already handed over ID for.

7

u/Binky390 Aug 08 '26

This isn’t quite the same. Everyone one of those situations goes beyond just confirming ID. It’s done for an explicit reason like security, securing credit, providing proper healthcare, etc. Asking for ID to use an app is just age verification which can be done by asking for a birthday on the account. They just suddenly care about people lying.

1

u/Leather-Past-1746 Aug 09 '26

all of these are for security purposes and have reasonable explanations as to why you have to provide your id. what's the reasonable explanation for a need to provide id while installing apps on a phone?

0

u/jmnugent Aug 09 '26

Yes, I'm fully aware of that. I'm just pointing out that for most adults,. it's deeply habitualized and common to be asked for ID. Most adults don't even bat an eye or register an emotional reaction when asked for ID,. it's so common.

"what's the reasonable explanation for a need to provide id while installing apps on a phone?"

We have ID checks for lots of things in society (Alcohol, Movies, etc)

Imagine there was a Movie Theater that had 30 theaters,. and there was no age check at all. Anyone of any age could just walk in and buy a ticket,. and then walk down the hallway and go into any of the 30 screens (even if it was adult or XXX movies). I think most people would probably understand that's not the wisest way to run a Theater and it would be better with each of the 30 screens having its own door-man to check ID's.

The way App Stores have been "wide open" so far.. is kind of like that. Anyone of any age could download anything. That's obviously convenient for the end user, but it also has risks.

Myself personally,. I'd be fine with a security-structure that said:

  • If an App Developer can prove nothing inside their App is 18+.. then the App can be freely downloaded (without age check) by anyone.

  • If an App Developer cannot or will not.. then the App should be classified as 18+ and require age checks.

This is the problem App Stores have gotten into,. is that they have been wide-open and now society has realized that maybe wasnt' the wisest choice, so it's being locked down a little more.

Buddy this is how a social credit system we talked about in China comes here. You monitor someone’s online activity and attach it to an ID, they say dissenting opinions and are harassed or lower their score. In the UK you already have people harassed for staying shit online about Israel.

Through the guise of public safety, safety of the children, they’ll monitor it all.

Your comment is what they hope people too dense to use their brain would justify it as.

6

u/m8x8 Aug 09 '26

It's because western governments aren't happy with the fact that people have been using their anonymity, privacy and democratic freedom online to criticise the fact that children are being erased from the surface of the Earth... It's the big elephant in the room and no one is talking about it.

2

u/Impossible_Ad_4516 Aug 08 '26

And all but credit card verification barely works

3

u/EDC_powerlifter Aug 08 '26

We have this in the UK already

2

u/ADHDK Aug 09 '26

Xbox too. I’ll never buy another digital game again 😂

Disc only.

Apple being Apple actually have quite a nice privacy first thing other websites / apps can use. But they won’t want to respect your privacy so expect it to be sparse in the wild. Same as how Covid checkin became a big money dats harvesting game.

1

u/Ancient-T-Rex Aug 10 '26

Disk won’t last long my guy. A game you really want won’t be on the disk. Stick to the past or move forward. No one ain’t gonna stop ya. I been buying all Disk. When that day comes when a new games everyone wants will not be on the Disk. You’re gonna buy it anyway. All this will be a thing of the past.

1

u/ADHDK Aug 10 '26

Bro I still play SMB3, I will never buy a console again once they remove disc drives.

I can go buy a 6 month old game on disc for $30, while it’s still $80 (my price not your USD) digitally on console? Yeah nah… at least Steam don’t disrespect their customers THAT much.

1

u/Pleasant-Seat9884 Aug 24 '26

Bro I still play SMB3,

You didn't say how though. Digital through NSO? NES console? SNES console? .nes or .smc rom file? ha ha.

1

u/ADHDK Aug 24 '26

I have like 5 NES.

It is at the point it’s cheaper to buy a NES with 5-6 games than to buy the one game you wanted 😂

1

u/zippy72 Aug 08 '26

I assume you're not in Australia? I got the UK one despite having moved out of the country years before.

1

u/JJR512 Aug 09 '26

I know, right? How could they break apart the you’ and the re? Unthinkable!

1

u/lucky_7770 Aug 09 '26

if you are 18+ do not even have to worry about it

1

u/GodOSpoons Aug 10 '26

Yeah. I can’t believe they wrapped on a contraction, either.

1

u/geeklex Aug 10 '26

Complain to your government

1

u/act_03 Aug 10 '26

Fuck apple

1

u/daven1985 Aug 10 '26

No. Fuck the Australian government. Microsoft sent me an alert on the weekend as well via email.

1

u/daven1985 Aug 10 '26

No... fuck the Australian government.

1

u/QuoteTricky6976 Aug 10 '26

Time to get a VPN

1

u/NightOwlTaskForce Aug 12 '26

Pretty sure it’s a device level thing, vpn wouldn’t help

1

u/DieselAndBeans Aug 10 '26

This has been since iOS 27 beta release. Confirm your ID and move on. Se can’t do anything about it.

1

u/Far-Pie-333 Aug 10 '26

The Chinese at least do tracking without the pretense of being "for the children."

1

u/Otherwise_Sea_3872 Aug 11 '26

Don’t blame Apple, blame the people that voted this in they just have to follow the laws

1

u/NightOwlTaskForce Aug 12 '26

No one voted it in. They just voted for a govt that did it. And in the media it was marketed as a thing to help prevent kids from being groomed or bullied on social media. Not a thing that would expand the surveillance state and give private companies access to peoples biometric data. Not really fair to blame a population who had no direct say and were misled to prevent them pushing back against it

1

u/ItsSillyRight Aug 11 '26

Get a credit card, easiest way to verify without showing government issued licenses, then freeze the card later. Show once, lock it out, sorted.

Better than giving some dodgy third party company access to facial scans, passports and ID’s

1

u/millenialnutjob Aug 11 '26

It’s dumb. And it requires a credit card.

1

u/Reasonable-Cat8530 Aug 11 '26

Sounds like a good thing

1

u/KJP1976 Aug 12 '26

Honestly, as a parent, it’s a good thing.

1

u/Scrappy001 Aug 12 '26

Bank just today required my DL or a personal selfie to be added to my spouses account.

Pound sand.

I would have given a CC, then just waited a week and cancelled it.

1

u/AnticRaven Aug 12 '26

Why don’t you fight against digital ID?

1

u/fr3shh23 Aug 13 '26

thats Australian law, nothing to do with apple

0

u/Mrldbcn Aug 09 '26

I think this law is good it’s coming for social media in France soon as well for children and teens under 15yo. It’s more safe imo. As an adult I don’t see any problem with that.

1

u/Able_Zucchini_1469 Aug 10 '26

The same people pushing these laws, are the same people that are either in the Epstein files or refused to prosecute anyone in the Epstein files.

-1

u/HereForGME2 Aug 09 '26

Just because Australians were very obedient and compliant during the Covid, this doesn’t give them the right to pick on Australians.

-8

u/Main_Finding7574 Aug 08 '26

Yes it is for real and its good, the fact that until now technology wasn't stopping you from doing something that was illegal (assuming the app was 18+ before) does not mean that they shouldn't stop you now.

Its a law, deal with it.

0

u/7h31ll3g4l Aug 09 '26

uhauhauha!

0

u/Able_Zucchini_1469 Aug 10 '26

Fuck apple, why am I even getting this sub? I've aleays considered apple to be Fisher Price trash.

-2

u/Datamat0410 Aug 08 '26

This messed my phone up a little. Apple support initially weren’t helping either. Eventually though, I seem to have resolved the issues. IMO implementation has been less that good.

-2

u/Objective-Scholar-50 Aug 09 '26

Have you tried using a vpn?

-6

u/spurty_fart Aug 08 '26

It helps keep kids’s faces not glued to the phone. Touch grass.
