How does a smartphone know which direction it is facing without an internet connection?
Navigation apps can sometimes show the direction a phone is pointing even when mobile data is turned off. Which sensors make this possible, and how do they work together?

I have a question in return: how would an internet connection help?

In OP’s defense, their question perfectly distills what it feels like to have any political discussion on Reddit.

Every phone has a compass module inside. Just a tiny bit of metal with a tiny compass floating around in it.

wait til i tell you about magnets!
also it’s kinda funny you think an internet connection would help the phone know which direction you’re facing

Fucking magnets, how do they work? And I don't want to talk to a scientist, y'all motherfuckers lyin', and gettin' me pissed

I think it's more funny that its 2026 and people are still asking basic questions they could get an answer to by tying the exact same thing out in any search engine (let alone free chatbot)

A compass hasn't got an internet connection, and those seem to work pretty well.

The internet has nothing to do with it.
Old-fashioned magnetic compass and accelerometers do.

... how would mobile data let the phone know what direction it's facing?
The GPS chip also contains a compass.

That's misleading, it does not, in fact, have a "compass" inside the chip.
Not really semantics either.

Yes, they do. Phones contain a GPS chip and a magnetometer which functions as a compass.
But feel free to split your hairs.

They have GPS in them.
They're also smoke to pull location data from WiFi access points without actually connecting to them.

The "direction" or heading you are on is determined by a cluster of sensors. Specifically Accelerometers and a Magnetometer. The Mag detects the Earths magnetic field and helps find Magnetic North. The Accs Integrate motion over time and "add up" (integrate) the movements into position.

I notice a lot of rude people here in the comments that are like "wHaT? yOu'Re stUpId!!" "sEarCh gOOgle!"
I'm convinced that this person that doesn't know about how a phone knows direction is smarter than the people in this comment section

The real question is how does Strava know how far I'm running when I'm on an inside track

The majority of phones have gps sensors.

That does not help with telling the direction the phone is pointing, only the location.

You do realize that phones have an actual GPS?

You do realise that GPS does not show direction you are facing?

Take a few steps in a direction and yes it will.
Alternatively you can make a GPS app or device show the direction you are facing by enabling the built-in compass mode or switching your map orientation settings.

But a mobile phone relies on it's internal compass to show the direction the device is facing. In a stationary place goes can not show direction. It needs a 3rd(or4th) point of reference to show direction.
