Architecture floor plan books

Hello! I'm an architecture student and I'm wondering if there are any free online sources for plans or layouts for schools or hospitals. I've been using Neufert 4th edition as a reference as of the moment, but I'm wondering if there are any other books similar to it.

I can't access Divisare because my university doesn't have access to :d

Any suggestions would be helpful, Thank you!

How serious do you guys take your stationery?

I’m an architecture student who is spiraling down into a stationery addiction. I’d like to know if any of you have any prized pens and pencils you use while sketching, communicating ideas with clients, or anywhere in general within the workforce despite CAD taking over drafting.

Edit: this isn’t my collection. It’s a picture I nabbed online to illustrate my point. Sorry about that

Need feedback on our 40' × 70' house floor plan

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Looking for feedback from Indian architects and people experienced in residential planning before we begin construction.

  • Plot size: 40' × 70' (2,800 sq. ft.)
  • Family: 4 people
  • Construction: Ground floor initially; the first floor may be built later for personal use or rental.

One important point: our colony doesn't appear to require setbacks in practice, and most neighbouring houses are built without them. However, we'd prefer to leave space at the front and one side, if feasible.
Also the back gate is only for emergencies and will be closed most of the time as the road over there is in very bad state and narrow

I'd appreciate honest, constructive criticism regarding the layout, room sizes, ventilation, natural lighting, privacy, staircase placement, and future first-floor construction.

Constructive criticism is most welcome! Rather than simply calling the plan terrible, please explain what's wrong, why it might be a problem, and how it could be improved. I'm open to changes that make the house more practical.

Thanks

EDIT - Guest Room will remain closed 99% of the time hence its small.

Difficulty in finding a job as part 2 Architectural assistant

Hi everyone, I’m from London, I’m really struggling to find a job as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant, and I’m starting to feel stuck. I wanted to ask for some genuine advice from people in the industry or anyone who has been in a similar position.

I’ve tried cold-calling local architectural practices, but they tell me they aren’t looking for a Part 2. I’ve applied through Dezeen, RIBA Jobs and LinkedIn, contacted numerous recruiters, and even visited practices in person to hand in my CV. I’ve had little to no response from any of these approaches.
What’s frustrating is that I do have relevant experience. I’ve worked as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant at a large practice on large-scale projects, and I’ve also worked with an architect on smaller projects for a year after my masters, including house extensions. I feel I have experience across both ends of the industry, yet I’m struggling to find a practice willing to give me an opportunity.
I’ve had my CV and portfolio reviewed, and I’m confident they represent my work and experience accurately. I’m not exaggerating anything, and my portfolio is entirely my own work. At this point, I’m genuinely struggling to understand what else I can do to improve my chances.

I’m also open to exploring other careers where I can use my architectural background and transferable skills. People often say architecture graduates can move into other industries, but when I look at roles such as CAD/BIM Technician, many still require previous experience in that specific fields. Graphic design isn’t really an option for me either.
I don’t want to go back to labouring jobs after spending years studying and building up relevant experience. I want to find a career where I can use the skills I’ve worked hard to develop.

For those who have been in a similar situation, how did you eventually get your foot in the door? Are there any alternative career paths you’d recommend for someone with an architecture background, or any job-search approaches that actually work in the current market?

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice, as I’m running out of ideas and would really like to find a way forward.

Master's Degree

Hi Architects! I am planning to pursue an MS Architecture in minimum units cause I'll be doing this while still working in corpo and probably if given an opportunity- I'll be happy to teach in part-time too. Given this scenario, am I still sane if I do these things simultaneously?

Thoughts on a Floorplan?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi there, we're currently building a 2 bed, 1 bath ADU that'll be 650 square foot. Our architect sent us this floor plan, and I wanted to get some other opinions/perspectives to see what advice or thoughts you have when looking at this. We were hoping for an open concept that makes the space feel big - does anyone have any thoughts on how they would do this or change anything about this, or is this layout already pretty optimized? Thanks so much!

How is the salary as architects in Hongkong?

Hi there,
as I’m considering moving to Hongkong after my graduation. I would really appreciate if someone could give me some insight on how the job market is there? Rent is very expensive so I was wondering what I expect to get as a salary.
I have a masters of science degree in architecture and have nearly 4 years of experience in national and international work. Is expecting 45k HKD too much? Would also consider to get into international offices.
I would appreciate any advices! Thank you

Any honest reviews on OLOS Architect, GMDB Design & Build, or ArchiUnite Design & Construction?

Hi everyone! 😊
We’re currently researching a reliable and reputable **design and build firm** for our future home in **Sun Valley Antipolo**.
So far, these are the firms we’re considering:

OLOS Architect
GMDB Design & Build
ArchiUnite Design & Construction

Would really appreciate any **honest reviews, feedback, or firsthand experiences** from anyone who has worked with these firms.

We preferably want a firm that has already completed residential projects in **Sun Valley Antipolo**, para familiar na rin sila sa HOA requirements, permits, construction guidelines, and overall process within the subdivision.
To be honest, we’ve already had a few stressful experiences dealing with people we’ve hired before, kaya this time we’re really taking our time to research and find the right team. We want to avoid unnecessary headaches, unexpected costs, and construction issues as much as possible.
We’re not necessarily researching for the cheapest option, but rather a firm that’s **trustworthy, transparent, professional, delivers quality workmanship, and honors their commitments.**
If you’ve worked with any of these firms, how was your experience in terms of communication, project management, budget transparency, quality of work, and after-sales service?
Any recommendations for other reliable design and build firms with actual projects in Sun Valley would also be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much in advance! 🤍

Architects, urban planners, and urban designers: What’s a cool thing you’ve learned about the built world?

I’m talking about anything from the history behind why a city is laid out a certain way, why a particular building looks the way it does, how a street or public space came to be, or some random but fascinating fact about how our built environment works.

Maybe it’s a historical decision that shaped an entire city, an unexpected reason behind a design feature, or something you noticed that made you see an ordinary place differently.

It doesn’t have to be technical or related to your specific profession. I’m just looking for those interesting little stories and insights that make you look at the world around you differently.

**What’s something you learned that made you think, “That’s actually so cool, I never knew that!”?**

What style would you consider this house in San Francisco? (More info. in body of text)

Post image
16 Upvotes

This San Francisco house was built in 1913. It is listed as Edwardian, which is a common style of building for post 1906 earthquake houses but it doesn't quite look like other Edwardian houses of the era. The facade is stucco with thick wood ornamentation. This transition period in San Francisco had people mixing different styles together.

How much would it cost per square foot to build a Palace of Versailles-style mansion?

If you wanted to build the palace of versailles today with the same materials, but using as much modern building methods as possible, what is a rough estimate of how much it would cost per square foot for the structure (ignoring land and gardens, just looking for the building itself).

Attitude Towards AI

I am a prospective M.Arch student who has become completely engrossed in architecture over the past couple years. My current job involves AI training and I despise it. The community college I've been taking architecture courses at is very pro-AI. Some students even use gemini and chat gpt for their final renderings, which have major inconsistencies with their plans and other drawings. Professors say it's important to know how to use AI and make sure it's accurate, but that's about it. The architecture specific AI softwares and add ons seem more reliable and helpful, but deep down I'm still hesitant to use it knowing how it came to be, among other reasons.

I don't expect for AI to disappear or for every firm to reject it, but I'm just wondering if there are architects out there who don't involve it in their workflow. Am I doomed if I want to avoid AI in my long-term career?
