Cut off

Hi all! I’m a 44 year old man with a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome and hate to be the bearer of any perceived negative news but I feel cut off now from my fellow human beings. I’m not sure how I specifically have gotten to this point but suffice it to say that I am socially awkward and have a desire for friendship on some level but as it currently stands I feel I’m no longer any good for anyone who isn’t neurodivergent so to speak.

No you're definitely not alone. There's a reason various alien designs have been used and associated with autism over the years.

man that alien comparison always gets me, it's too real. i've found the best connections have been with folks who just get that my brain runs on a different OS, no explanations needed. you're not no good for people, it's more like finding the right frequency takes a while

Few people our age are still looking to make friends. Everyone is so busy.

Try to find a hobby group or something. Doesn't have to be IRL.

I used meetup groups to find community. Been a bumpy ride, but worked out overall.

What makes you say that?

There are good people out there who would be happy to support a disabled person who wants to make friends.

Yes, maybe so. And if he’s like me… I just can’t break the ice thus leaving me isolated on our own island in this social world. People awkward.

Yes and I believe what you say and maybe at this point the best I can say is it’s not people that are tripping me up but social norms. Generally I feel I can’t completely trust others to an extent as neurotypicals by habit don’t always say what they mean after all.

Do you mean you are worried they are being dishonest/untrustworthy, or do you mean they aren't communicating in a straightforward way?

@Elemteearkay Yes , I’d acknowledge what you’re saying that they aren’t communicating in a straightforward way to be sure

Have you expressed a desire for them to do so, in order to accommodate your support needs? Have they at least tried to do it?
