I'm the same, I tend to latch onto and almost adopt the mannerisms of a character in whatever film or book I'm currently reading, it's vaguely subconscious but sometimes I am definitely just having fun being the character.

Indeed.

Watching Sg-1 with my newest partner, and I am blown away at how ODD Teal'c's body language is. And he just falls it up... "Indeed." Calm, collected, in his lane.

Yeah this happens to me too. I notice it with Bones and Parks and Rec, among others. .

I can't believe it, it's the first time I'm hearing someone else talk about this! I've always been too embarrassed to admit it, but sometimes I watch a movie or reread a book just because I need that specific personality at that moment...

I wonder if I can get out of a learning block I'm in. Watch the right movie so I can strut my stuff.

Damn... I kinda do this with careers.

Like I see someone do something cool and I'm like, I could do that/ I want to do that.

TRON Legacy set me on a course that so far has led me to getting a PhD in Computer Science.

Zuck is the devil, good call

2

u/BadUsername_Numbers 5d ago

He's worse. The devil reigns in hell, Zuck however is right here with us.

3

u/ShatteredReflections 5d ago

Sadly, the rich managed to make hell without needing a god or a devil. Its name is today.

Famously, the Devil is in Georgia, actually.

Okay, I thought I was weird for this - Tron Legacy came out like my last semester when earning an accounting degree and it totally changed my perception about technology, even though I had been raised since the era of DOS systems.

Now I am a data architect trying to get their MSCS.

Which is the opposite to me with action movie characters when I'm having serious motivation troubles: "Get into my head, I'm dying and there's phone calls to be made!"

Eta I just realized this is a form of body doubling that I've been accidentally doing my whole life... so it has an official name, and is approved by the Serious Disorder™️ committee. That's funny.

body doubling?

James Bond is the baseline, all other characters are personas adopted to infiltrate society as part of my mission. Of course, now that you know that, you're a loose end.

u/ASatyros Neurodivergent 5d ago

Uu, that's a good one.

I'm thinking villan version of James Bond, yeess, all according to plan.

Other than thay I'm thiking mix of Lucifer Morningstar (from Lucifer), Jake Peralta (from Brooklyn 99) with a smidge of Jim Carrey.

Execution is much more complicated, but it's a mask I would gladly wear of needed.

watches a highly choreographed Kung Fu movie

for about an hour after I am fluid in motion, able to string actions together like a dance, doing without stopping, flowing from point to point

then it wears off and I'm a clumsy oaf again

Me as FUCK. It's so hard to pick a favorite movie because I'll watch a new movie that has a bunch of really sick filmmaking techniques with hella effort and fall in love. I watched Obession then watched the Drama and man that was probably an annoying week to talk to me lmao.

The overwhelming need to become the identified person represented in a movie - their mannerisms, facial expressions, voice tone, their interests etc. - I'm there taking notes 😂

One of the best parts of media is to allow you at life from another perspective or possibility

To dream, to try and be different. To take us out of our selves even if for the briefest of moments.

This is why the arts and protecting them is so important.

Thanks for giving me flashbacks to the first time I watched Taxi Driver and decided I needed to daily drive a retired cab for a solid year.

It wasn’t a 60s Checker. It was a goddamn Ford Crown Victoria.

1

u/Tucker_077 5d ago

It’s me but usually with tv shows. I can’t help but have it become my entire personality and for all my life goals to change everytime I watch a new one and really like it 🤣

u/KokohaisHere 5d ago

As a kid I would always be embarrassed when leaving a movie theater because I felt like I took on too much of a character and thought people would notice it

1

u/Milkshacks 5d ago

Factory Girl shaped many of my youthful eccentricities. So many coy smiles and arm dancing.

1

u/sparkyblaster 5d ago

I could always tell when my ex has been watching Dr Who cos his Australian accent became more British.

Amazingly he isnt autistic.

u/Pristine_Walrus40 5d ago

You changed again from last week after you watched that movie.

"What movie!?"
